Each state and territory in Australia has its own unique rules and regulations when it comes to selling a used car.

In this guide we tell you how to sell a car in Tasmania.

For sellers, the rules set down by the Tasmanian Government are straightforward and easy to follow.

Do the paperwork

To transfer the ownership after selling a car in Tasmania the seller is required to complete the Notice of Disposal form, which can be found on the reverse side of the car’s Certificate of Registration.

You are required to do the paperwork in the presence of the buyer, so you can be sure to get all of their details.

Once the Notice of Disposal form is completed it must be signed by the seller and handed to the buyer. If the car is owned in joint names both owners must sign the form.

It’s important to ensure the transfer of ownership takes place as quickly as possible. While you continue to be listed on the Motor Registry System as the registered owner you could be liable for any parking fines or traffic infringements incurred by the new owner before the transfer of ownership is completed.

The completed form must be mailed within seven days to The Registrar Motor Vehicles in Hobart, or it can be dropped off at any Service Tasmania Shop.

If making the transfer online you need the vehicle’s identification details, details of the buyer, the date you sold the car, and the selling price or the market value, whichever is highest.

The rules apply equally to a private seller and dealer.

No fee

The good news for those selling a car in Tasmania is that they do not incur a fee for transferring the ownership to the person buying it.

No roadworthy

Further good news for the seller is that unlike some other states in Australia there is no requirement in Tasmania to have a roadworthy check on the car being sold.

Be ready to sell

Before you put your used car on the market you should prepare it, and yourself, for the sale to make it as easy as possible.

Like anything, presentation is the key. No one will be interested in buying a car that looks uncared for, so clean it inside and out.

Cleaning the interior and ridding it of any unpleasant smells is very important. A clean, fresh interior is a great selling feature; a dirty, untidy one is a turn-off.

Take the time to polish the paintwork, and touch up any stone chips or small scratches or scars.

Also clean the engine bay, and tidy the boot.

If you don’t have the time or are not sure what to do consider having your car professionally detailed. A few hundred dollars spent on making it look its best can result in a faster sale, or a higher price, or both.

When the time comes to advertise your car make sure you have things like the registration or ownership papers on hand as well as the car’s service book for the buyer to see.

Set your price

Setting your asking price is important. A price that is too low will leave you short-changed; one that is too high won’t attract any buyers.
