VW Caddy EGR cooler

The EGR cooler on my 2006 VW Caddy TDI automatic van needs to be replaced. Apparently this is an ongoing problem with this model, and this part has been modified by VW several times. Do I replace the part, and risk it needing replacing again, or change the van to another make?

You must replace it; the car isn't legal if you don't because the part is a part of the exhaust emission control system, which is required by law to be functional. Going to a van of another make is an expensive move, one that needs careful consideration.
