Out in the cold

I HAVE a 1994 Excel Sprint with 125,000km up. Twice recently the temp gauge has stayed at cold for five to 10 minutes, then the ``check engine'' light has come on. I stop, switch off, restart and the gauge works properly. The coolant level is good. What would cause this?

THERE could be many reasons, from a simple wiring problem -- and Korean cars tend to suffer from them -- to the coolant temp sensor. It may be difficult to trace, but I would start with the coolant sensor.
