Mass of problems

AT 116,000km I noticed a nasty knocking noise coming from the engine in my Peugeot 407 diesel. The diagnosis was that the dual-mass flywheel needed replacing, a big job costing about $4000. I had never heard of a dual-mass flywheel and I wonder how many readers are aware many new vehicles are fitted with these flywheels. Though I understand the purpose of the dual-mass flywheel is to smooth out torque, it seems manufacturers have taken something that was ultra-reliable and re-engineered it so it now fails. I approached Peugeot, but they refused to meet any costs on the ground that not all services were done by a Peugeot dealer. This calls into question the engineering integrity of Peugeot cars. How many buyers are aware they face this penalty down the track?

Dual-mass flywheels have been used for several years, particularly in more expensive models. As you say they are used to better smooth out the torque pulsations coming from the engine, and it has been very effective in doing that. They are only used on vehicles fitted with manual gearboxes, not automatics. It's not a common fault, so persist with Peugeot and try to convince them to pay at least part of the cost.
