My 1998 XH II Ford Longreach six-cylinder ute has developed an uneven idle, especially in gear, so I quite often shift to neutral when stopped at lights. The problem goes away as soon as I accelerate and at all driving speeds. A mechanic suggested it could be sucking air somewhere. What are your thoughts?
I would agree with the mechanic, it’s struggling under load by being too lean. I could be a broken or cracked vacuum fitting on the engine, or even the brake booster, and I would also check the PCV valve.
