Holden Vectra stalling solution

I was reading your column a few weeks ago and read with interest an e-mail you received regarding a Holden Vectra that kept on “stalling/stopping when driving”. We had the same issue with our Vectra and it got so bad we sold it. After numerous trips to various Holden dealers, it was “a switched-on” apprentice mechanic who spotted the problem, which was a thin plastic tube that is connected to the vacuum inlet in the EFI “kinking when the driver decelerates or takes their foot off the pedal.” The plastic tube lost its elasticity over time and when the driver decelerated, the vacuum would kink the pipe thus causing the engine to stall. Hope the Vectra drivers out there read this and head down to their mechanic.

As I often write in this column tracing intermittent or odd problems can be difficult, and mechanics today are trained to replace parts rather than spend hours searching for the cause, often without finding it. Finding a mechanic who is keen enough to dig deeper into a problem is a blessing.
