Good pick for mid-size SUV?

Can you recommend a medium-sized SUV, bigger than a Subaru XV? I'm looking for something at the cheaper end of the scale - a run-around car with space for a couple of small kids.

I'd go for a Kia Sportage or a Hyundai ix35. They are essentially the same under the skin, and both get The Tick, so it comes down to the deal.
