What is your opinion on modern cars, especially with all the electronics built into them these days? Once upon a time you could buy and keep a car for 20-plus years, now it seems modern cars will become obsolete every few years just like computer equipment and software. I cannot see a 2016 car still being driven around in 2036, although I possibly see a car built pre-2000's being driven. This may be OK for people who change vehicles every 3-5 years, but what about the rest of us who don't have that option?
Today's cars are generally better than those built in the good old days, they're safer, they don't rust, and the engines and mechanics, apart from some transmissions, last much longer if they're well maintained. But the electronics are a concern and car companies don't seem to stock spares like they once did, which will make it harder to keep the cars going in the long term. I believe carmakers are building cars to last the life of the warranty and are expecting owners to regularly trade their cars in for the newer models. We once used to say that cars are becoming white goods on wheels, similar to fridges and washing machines and things like that. Well, in my view they have become white goods.
