I OWN a 2000 Falcon XR8 that has done 65,000km, but has a clunk in the auto. It happens when slowing down when the auto clunks into first gear. I was initially told by Ford they couldn't find the problem, that it's probably just the auto learning the way you drive. But I have discovered that a service bulletin in February 2001 advised this was a common fault in these cars. It's funny that no one from Ford or FPV or any of their service people knew anything until I supplied the service memo. To cut a long story short, the valve body in the auto has gone and the cost is $1700 for the part alone without installation. If anyone else is having the same problem they should pursue it with their dealer.
THANKS for the advice. I'm sure other owners will appreciate knowing there is a problem and that Ford acknowledges it. Unfortunately, carmakers often don't do themselves any favours by either denying there is a problem or being ignorant of the problem's existence and the solution their engineers have developed. It would certainly be better if carmakers came clean and fixed the cars affected instead of hoping owners won't complain.
