Clang, then a howl

I DRIVE a 1998 Hyundai Excel Sprint single cam with a manual gearbox. The box is extremely ``notchy'' and finding reverse can become a lottery at times. When it does go in, especially on a slope, there is a clang. Also there is a howl at speeds below 60km/h and when changing down through the gears. I've been told the Excel gearbox was dodgy from the word go and the howl is from a design fault with the speedo cable. What do you reckon?

EXCELS do have dodgy manual gearboxes, as you've been told. Reverse is hard to select, but there is a way around the problem: select a forward gear first, then select reverse as you would normally, and you'll find it goes in OK. Second-gear synchro is the other problem area with the Excel gearbox. The problem wasn't really fixed until the Accent was released.
