    Blown switch in steering assembly unit

    Two weeks ago the ignition key in my 2008 Ford Territory stopped clicking back from the start position. It took me an hour to figure out why none of the electrics would work until I manually turned the key back after starting the car. My Ford dealer found that there was a faulty electric switch at the back of the steering assembly. I was totally in disbelief that the whole assembly needs to be replaced, as this part is not sold separately. They advised the cost for a new steering assembly is over $2000. I recently spoke to a fellow Territory owner and he has the same fault with his car and like me will not get it fixed. Do you know of a possible solution, or should I take it further with Ford?

    Try an auto electrician, they might be able to repair the switch, or might even be able to source the switch from overseas if they can identify. The problem, of course, is that Ford Australia doesn't stock it as an individual part, only as part of an assembly. Unfortunately that's what the car business has become, and dealers are now mostly part swappers, not repairers.
