Best to change belts

I RECENTLY replaced the cam timing belt on my 1996 Hyundai Excel for the first time. I bought the car in 1998 with 33,000km on the clock, so I would say it's the first time it's been done. My car has done 217,000km and the old belt didn't look much different from the new one. It was marginally longer. This highlights to me the potential longevity of parts as long as the initial installation is up to scratch.

THE recommended service interval for the belt is 100,000km, but remember that it is set at a conservative figure to cover the whole population. A belt might run without a problem for the sort of distance yours has, but chances are it won't and the consequences of it breaking are too dire to think about. Even if your belt has stretched just a little, that can lead to it jumping teeth, which can also be a disaster.
