Tom’s way into motoring journalism was anything but straightforward despite annoying his parents to no end as a child by identifying makes and models with ease, and acquiring a large collection of Matchbox models.

Other interests took over in the intervening years, including tinkering with electronics and computers, and an interest in the past, which eventually culminated in a Bachelor of Arts and Science from the University Of Sydney with a major in Ancient History.

During this time, Tom was exposed to all sorts of cars by working as a valet and eventually the Bell Captain at The Star casino in Sydney.

He then went on another side-quest, studying law at Macquarie University before applying for a job at CarsGuide.

After being hired Tom worked his way up the ranks in a variety of roles and refined his craft, now serving as CarsGuide's Deputy News Editor, with special interests in new technologies and electric vehicles, as well as emerging trends from China.

Tom has been recognised by his peers as the EV Journalist of the Year at the 2026 Newspress Australia Awards.

He’s personally owned a selection of wheels from a 1981 Holden Gemini to a 2009 Ford Falcon, through to his current 2011 Subaru Forester and many others in between.

Here’s how much Toyota’s big EV will cost
By Tom White · 15 Apr 2026
Toyota has priced its upcoming upsized electric SUV, the bZ4X Touring.A sister car to the Subaru Trailseeker, and one of a handful of larger mainstream electric SUVs, the bZ4X Touring starts at $69,990 before on-road costs, topping out a restructured bZ4X range. It's only available with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup with 167kW at each axle, outputting a combined 280kW, making it Toyota's most powerful SUV. The brand says it can sprint from 0-100km/h in 4.4 seconds. It has a 74.7kWh battery pack which grants it a 488km driving range according to the WLTP cycle. It can charge at up to 150kW on a fast DC charger or an impressive 22kW on AC for comparatively fast slow-charging rates. While the Touring shares its underpinnings with the regular bZ4X, it is 140mm longer, increasing boot space by nearly 100 litres, from 452L to 550L.Standard features are set to include dual-zone climate control, eight-way powered front seats with both heating and ventilation, a digital rear-vision mirror, fixed panoramic sunroof, dual wireless phone chargers, a 1500W inverter for vehicle-to-load charging and a 14-inch touchscreen with a nine-speaker premium audio system. It maintains the same 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster as before. The Touring scores unique 20-inch alloys compared to the rest of the bZ4X range, with front and rear skid plates, roof rails, matt finished wheel arches, a contrasting bonnet insert and a rear window wiper.Meanwhile, the recently-updated mainline bZ4X range continues in two variants, either the front-wheel-drive version, priced at $55,990, or the all-wheel drive, priced at $67,990.Interestingly the Touring forms part of the regular bZ4X range, while Subaru’s equivalent Trailseeker is sold as a separate model in two grades, distinct from its bZ4X-equivalent Solterra range.Stylistically, the two Subaru models are more distinct than the bZ4X and its Touring variant, which share the same face. The pair share an even larger three-row fully electric model each, the Toyota Highlander EV and Subaru Getaway, however they have been announced in left-hand drive for the North American market only for now.

Nissan's small SUV re-boot
By Tom White · 14 Apr 2026
Nissan has revealed a re-booted version of its Juke small SUV, as a purely electric vehicle. The next-generation Juke is described by Nissan as a core model for the European market and was revealed as part of Nissan’s new long-term direction strategy announcement. This announcement also saw the introduction of the next-generation X-Trail mid-size and Rogue small SUVs, both primarily as e-Power hybrid models.Aside from its size-category, the new Juke is a total departure from the previous model, debuting a new distinct design direction which separates it from the rest of the mainline Nissan range.Up front, this includes blocky light fittings and an LED light bar with an illuminated Nissan logo, as well as chunky rhomboid design motifs. Powertrain details are yet to be announced and the interior is yet to be shown. The Juke will live alongside the next-generation Leaf in Nissan’s fully electric line-up, although as they overlap significantly with the Leaf morphing into a crossover, both cars won’t be offered in every market. To that end, Nissan confirmed the new-generation Juke would not be offered in Australia, following its earlier announcement that the existing combustion car will be culled from the line-up.The outgoing Renault Captur-based Juke was one of the least popular options in the small SUV segment, moving just 90 units year-to-date, outselling only the Alfa Romeo Junior and Jeep Avenger in its category. It seems Australia may not even receive the next-generation Leaf for the time being either, with the brand also confirming it has put its plans to introduce the next-gen crossover to our market on hold as Nissan struggles for competitiveness of its electric models in the face of cut-price Chinese rivals. The new Leaf wasn’t all-out cancelled, with the car being described to CarsGuide previously as “indefinitely delayed.”According to the brand the scaling-back of its EV ambitions in Australia is to focus on hybridising its passenger car line-up, where it says 75 per cent of all registrations are, in order to “future-proof” its local line-up.However, with the nameplates being cancelled, this sees Nissan’s line-up reduced to six models for the time being, including the Qashqai small SUV, X-Trail mid-sizer, Patrol off-roader, Navara ute, Ariya mid-size electric SUV and the Z sports car.The future may have more in store for Nissan as it globally re-focuses, and brings more of a spotlight on its thriving range of Chinese joint-venture models, which are imminently earmarked for export across the world. This includes the N7 sedan, but more interestingly for Australia - the Frontier Pro plug-in hybrid ute as an electrified alternative to the Navara and NX8 large SUV, which could serve as an electric and hybrid replacement for the outgoing Pathfinder.Nissan is embattled on two fronts in Australia - facing hefty fines under the recently-introduced new vehicle efficiency standard (NVES) which burdens it with up to $10.76 million in potential fines if it doesn’t buy emissions credits or sell less polluting vehicles before the end of this year. The brand is also facing a sales down-turn as it struggles to find footing with its increasingly expensive range in a more-competitive-than-ever Australian market.Nissan is down 31 per cent year-on-year to the end of March while more value-focused rivals like GWM (up 28.5 per cent), Chery (up 93.8 per cent), and BYD (up 100.1 per cent) and other newcomers like Geely and its Zeekr premium arm, as well as Omoda Jaecoo eat into its market share.Stay tuned for more on Nissan’s plans for the remainder of 2026.

Fancy LandCruiser could go hybrid
By Tom White · 14 Apr 2026
Lexus has filed a patent overseas for a new variant of its boxy LandCruiser Prado-based GX off-roader, dubbed the GX550h.Currently, the GX sold in Australia is distinct from the LandCruiser Prado, offering a 3.4-litre turbocharged petrol V6 instead of the Prado’s HiLux-soruced 2.4-litre diesel engine. As a result, the Lexus has a clear power advantage, putting out 250kW/650Nm as opposed to the Prado’s 150kW/500Nm. Despite its distinct gearbox (the GX scores a 10-speed automatic compared to the Prado’s eight-speed unit), the GX is a thirsty vehicle, consuming a combined 12.3L/100km of minimum 95RON unleaded. This new patent filing over in the USA reveals the brand is considering a new hybrid variant of the GX, the GX550h. It is hard to say what this powertrain could be, as a ‘550h’ doesn’t currently exist in the Lexus line-up.The closest engine is the hybrid LC 500h GT car, which is equipped with a 3.5-litre V6 petrol (8GR-FXS - 220kW/350Nm) paired to a hybrid system, producing a combined 264kW, or the RX500h that uses the same naming convention, but has a different set-up, pairing a 2.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired to a six-speed hybrid automatic transmission, producing a combined 273kW.However, it’s possible the 550h could be a hybrid version of its turbocharged V6 petrol engine which has yet to be seen. US media points out a version of this set-up already exists in the left-hand drive LandCruiser 300 Series based LX700h, while locally a 3.4-litre twin-turbo V6 petrol hybrid (V35A-FTS 290kW/649Nm) exists in the US-built Tundra with a combined 326kW mated to a 10-speed automatic.A similar powertrain will soon join the LandCruiser 300-Series line-up for the flagship hybrid GR Sport and Sahara ZX variants. It is due in the first half of 2026 - but will only be offered in a five-seat layout. Figures like towing capacity, payload, and even fuel consumption are yet to be revealed for the larger LandCruiser. It’s worth noting that our trademark search did not bring up a current trademark for GX500h in Australia, suggesting it may be a left-hand drive only proposition focused on the US market - at least for the time being. The Lexus GX has moved 241 units in the first few months of 2026 - down 15.4 per cent year-on-year, and paling in comparison to the more pragmatic Prado’s 4515 units. Even the Prado is down 46 per cent for the year, however.Lexus as a brand is down 14.6 per cent year-on-year and is facing fresh competition from new more premium players from China, like the increasingly popular Zeekr, which is up 768.2 per cent from a low base, and Denza, which has already moved 627 units in 2026 despite not existing in Australia last year.In the case of the GX, many Chinese players will also be muscling in on what was once the turf of Japanese brands, Jeep and Land Rover, with hybrid offerings like the Denza B5 which will be followed-up by hybrid off-roaders from Geely, Chery, and GAC.

BYD's all-new ute spotted
By Tom White · 13 Apr 2026
A new ute from BYD has been spotted again, and it’s not some variation of the best-selling Shark 6.Instead, this new offering from BYD will be based on a monocoque chassis with more modest capabilities than its larger ladder frame Shark 6 sibling. The brand hasn’t been forthcoming on details of this new tray-backed offering, but judging by the spy images from China it will be a more lifestyle and urban-focused vehicle. In interesting additional details unearthed by CarNewsChina based on Ministry of Industry and Information Technology filings, BYD has earmarked new production capacity for a ‘plug-in hybrid pick-up’ at its Zhengzhou production facility, marking the first time BYD has been approved to produce such vehicles for domestic sale. This is because while the Shark 6 has been a smash hit in export-markets, it is yet to be sold locally in China. The car-based BYD ute has been spotted multiple times before, and is expected to launch both in China, but also South America in 2026. In both cases, the styling appears to share much of its design language with the brand’s “Dynasty” line-up of vehicles, specifically the car we know in Australia as the Sealion 5.Current spy images show an SUV-style body all up until the C-Pillar, which gives way to a relatively compact tray. It also shows significant rear suspension compression, suggesting it is undergoing load testing.Unlike previous images, it also shows a Sealion 5-style grille that was previously more heavily camouflaged. It also shows an integrated rear sports bar piece which syncs-up with the SUV-style roofline. The tailgate has upright-style headlights, while the rear axle appears further back than it does on the Sealion 5, suggesting an extended wheelbase over its presumably SUV platform-relations.It matches previous European patent filings, which show a unibody pick-up with near-identical styling to the Sealion 5 up front, Sealion 6-style alloy wheels, and a rear light profile which more resembles the Shark 6, with a family similarity suggesting it could be part of a broader Shark ute line-up.BYD global executives have previously poured cold water on the idea of a smaller sibling to sit underneath the Shark 6 in Australia, with the brand’s Asia Pacific General Manager Liu Xueliange telling CarsGuide BYD has “no plan” for the smaller model. However, with the overwhelming success of the Shark 6 in the intervening six months since those comments were made, it would be unsurprising if the brand isn’t looking hard at the possibility of expanding on the Shark’s success Down Under. If so it would be one of the first to dip back into the unibody ute market, which is currently only served by the KGM Musso EV.Overseas, there is a bigger scene for such non ladder-frame offerings, with the likes of the Hyundai Santa Cruz and top-selling Ford Maverick also potentially being good fits for the Australian market.Locally passenger car based utes once used to be strong sellers thanks to the locally-assembled Ford and Holden utes, but even smaller tray-backed models enjoy cult classic status, like the Subaru Brumby and Proton Jumbuck. It would be characteristic of BYD to ignite interest in an unlikely segment of the market, as it has done with affordable EVs, plug-in hybrid utes, and now small cars like the BYD Atto 1. Watch this space.

Kia’s electric and hybrid future confirmed
By Tom White · 13 Apr 2026
Kia has confirmed its short-term new model plans, with the upcoming EV2 small SUV to be followed up with what appears to be an EV1 and a hybrid/electric ute.At Kia’s CEO Investor day, the brand’s CEO Ho Sung Song confirmed a range of future products to be launched by the brand before the end of the decade.Song said its fully electric line-up will expand to 14 models by 2030, made up of 11 passenger cars, and three commercial vehicles. It is part of the brand’s push to be recognised as what Song termed as a “Tier-1 EV brand.”On the passenger car front, this will include the EV2 this year, but also the Syros city EV for the Indian market, a Mazda2-sized electric hatchback, a new mid-size SUV (to live between EV5 and EV6 in terms of price), and an little SUV, expected to be the EV1.The brand will continue to lean into its “PBV” commercial vehicle range. The first of the Kia PBVs to launch in Australia will be the PV5 mid-size van, due imminently, wearing a keen $55,990 price-tag for the single Cargo S launch variant. From there, the brand will launch a larger PV7 globally later this year, and then the large PV9 by 2029.All versions of the PV vans will score multiple bodystyles, totalling 40, including standard, long-wheelbase, cab chassis and passenger variants, but also an open-bed pick-up truck form as well as purpose-built taxis, campervans and luxury layouts. The headlining news is the announcement of another ute to bolster the brand's range. Kia said this model will be a US-dedicated HEV pick-up due before 2030. While the brand showed the silhouette of the Tasman on its slides regarding this incoming model, it seems there will be a distinct product designed to compete with US-specific “mid-size” models. It will be available as both a plugless hybrid, but will also feature a new range-extender hybrid system, which has also been hinted at by Kia’s Hyundai parent company.Kia says the new system will use a proprietary system, which leverages the generator motor as the drive motor, and will reduce costs by using “optimised battery sizing” while improving range through “engine based battery charging.”This new range-extender hybrid will use only electric motors to drive the wheels, with no tailshaft connecting the rear wheels to the front, as per a graphic shown by the brand. In this sense, the system will be closer in its design to a BYD Shark 6.This push into electric cars, vans and even a ute, won’t come at the cost of combustion models either. Kia promised nine new combustion cars before 2030, including the next-gen Telluride large SUV and the Seltos small SUV.The brand also promises “entry-level” hybrid versions of many of these cars as it hopes to sell nearly 70 per cent electrified models by 2030.It confirmed it is also working on a new software-defined vehicle, which will “debut to customers’ in 2028, with an eye to launching a dedicated robotaxi model in “late 2030.”Locally, the next major launches for Kia will be the arrival of its next-generation Seltos, as well as the arrival of the PV5. Stay tuned for more as the brand will no doubt announce more plans for 2027 in the second half of this year.

Nissan's ground-breaking new SUV priced!
By Tom White · 10 Apr 2026
Nissan’s long-awaited NX8 large SUV has gone on sale in China, where it is built as part of a joint-venture with Dongfeng. The NX8 is 4870mm long, making it larger than the Kia EV6, but smaller than the EV9. On the Australian market, it is closest in size to the Polestar 3, which is also a large five-seater. In the near future, it would also compete with the Subaru Trailseeker and Toyota bZ4X Touring.Unlike those dedicated EV rivals though, the NX8 is offered in both full EV and range-extender hybrid forms, making it a potentially unique offering if it were to reach our shores. The NX8 looks to be significantly more affordable than its rivals. Its Chinese price-tag starts at around A$35,000 for the base 150 Pro hybrid version, reaching to around A$45,000 for the top-spec fully electric 650 Max. If it were to follow the usual roughly 20 per cent extra price conversion from most Chinese models, you could expect to see price-tags sitting in a $45,000 - $60,000 span in Australia. The most affordable version of the Kia EV9 starts at $97,000, meaning the NX8 could compete with cars a size-bracket below it, whilst also offering a range-extender hybrid alternative to the just-announced Subaru Trailseeker EV, which starts from $67,990 before on-roads.There are effectively five main variants across three trim levels of the NX8 in its Chinese home market. There are two range extenders, which are equipped with a 1.5-litre turbo engine and a battery providing either 150km or 310km of range and two fully electric versions, offering either 580km or 650km of range. These are then split into the base Pro, mid-spec Max, and top-spec Brand Master trim levels.Only the 650 Max and Brand Master grades with a more powerful 250kW motor are offered with an 800-volt 81kWh CATL battery, which can fast charge on a DC unit at up to a claimed 463kW for a 10 - 80 per cent charge time in as low as 12 minutes.Meanwhile the lesser 400-volt 580 versions are offered with a 73kWh LFP battery from Sunwoda and the range extenders are both LFP batteries, with either a 20.3kWh or 43.2kWh capacity.Total range for the hybrids is set at either 1320km for the 150km battery, or 1450km for the 310km battery. All variants have vehicle-to-load, able to output at an impressive 6.6kW.Interestingly, all variants of the NX8 are rear-wheel drive, with the range-extender variants producing 195kW/310Nm, the electric versions producing 215kW/310Nm, and only the top-spec 800-volt versions producing 250kW/310Nm.As it is only a five-seater, the NX8 offers a larger-than-usual boot capacity of 773 litres, while electric versions also get a 95 litre frunk.Interior kit includes dual 15.6-inch multimedia panels spanning the dash, and a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster for the driver. There is a non-zero possibility of the NX8 making it to Australia, as Nissan executives have actively opened the door to the idea of the brand’s Chinese built range coming to Australia, although this is likely to start with the sought-after BYD Shark 6-rivalling Frontier Pro as a plug-in hybrid alternative to the recently-launched next-generation Navara.Globally, Nissan executives have also leaned into the idea of making Chinese joint-venture models more international propositions in order to make Nissan more competitive again. In addition, the end of production for the previously-American-sourced Pathfinder leaves an NX8-sized space in Nissan’s line-up somewhere above the X-Trail.

New cut-price electric tradie van emerges
By Tom White · 10 Apr 2026
Geely’s commercial division, Farizon, has revealed pricing and specifications for its upcoming V7E commercial van.Sitting below the already-launched Farizon SuperVan, which is a more premium offering to compete with the likes of the Ford Transit Custom and Volkswagen Transporter, the V7E is in a budget price bracket, offering a smaller load area and payload.Starting from just $49,990 drive-away, the V7E becomes by far the most affordable electric offering in its class, even undercutting the impressive $55,990 price-tag for the new Kia PV5 electric commercial van.Farizon said its new van is purpose-built for trades, couriers, and fleet operators, as opposed to the more multi-purpose edge and diverse bodystyle options of its more expensive SuperVan.The V7E offers up to 1338kg of payload (1208kg in the Extended Range), with a 6.95 cubic metre load area. It also has a 2.86 metre total load length and a low load height of 610mm.It arrives in two variants but just one bodystyle, with the $49,990 leading price for the base Standard Range 50kWh version (240km WLTP range), stepping up to $53,990 for the 66kWh Extended Range variant (329km WLTP range). Both share a 100kW maximum DC charge speed, with the 50kWh version charging from 20 - 80 per cent in just 26 minutes, while the 66kWh version can complete the same charge in 33 minutes, which the brand says reduces downtime for operators.Slow AC charging maxes out at 11kW for a roughly four hour charge on the base car or five hour charge on the Extended Range. The V7E also features a full-size 240-volt household power outlet on board to help use the battery to power external devices. Both versions of the V7E are front-wheel drive, powered by the same 110kW/230Nm electric motor. As for total loading specs, the V7E measures 4995mm long, 1820mm wide, and 1985mm tall with a 3200mm wheelbase. The cargo area measures 2865mm long, 1690mm wide, and 1435mm tall. GVM for both variants is 3150kg. Towing capacity is limited to 750kg unbraked or 1000kg braked. The V7E has a 1100mm sliding side door and 270-degree opening barn doors at the rear.Standard equipment is the same on both cars, featuring 16-inch aero-style wheels, LED headlights, fabric seat trim with heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a 12.3-inch multimedia touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 7.0-inch digital dash cluster and a dual speaker audio system. It also features an array of physical controls to “reduce reliance on touchscreen interaction.”The V7E only features dual frontal airbags, but a full suite of active safety items usually only found on passenger cars.Farizon offers an eight-year 200,000km battery warranty and a five-year 200,000 new vehicle warranty, with a matching five years of roadside assist.Customer deliveries of the V7E are expected to begin in May of 2026.

MG's new Zeekr rival incoming
By Tom White · 10 Apr 2026
MG, the original Chinese-backed success story in Australia, has been on the back foot in the face of new rivals, but the brand isn’t staying still with the reveal of a range of new models for the Australian market shown at the Melbourne Motor Show. The Shanghai-based brand showed off several new modelss, including the much-hyped IM LS9 large hybrid SUV, which will go into battle against the Zeekr 8X and Denza B5 with its range-extender hybrid powertrain. The LS9 was launched under SAIC’s more premium IM brand in China last year, and features a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine with no connection to the wheels, acting as a range-extender for a large 65.9kWh battery pack which grants it a 308km electric driving range according to the more lenient CLTC standard. The large SUV also brings unprecedented levels of luxury for an MG-branded product with generous interior claddings, large screens, and three rows of seating (in a six-seat layout for the Chinese market). The brand will introduce a fully electric version of its U9 ute, which launched in 2025. Appearing previously in approval documents, the U9 EV will have a dual-motor powertrain producing 200kW at the front and 125kW at the rear, although torque figures are yet to be confirmed. If the U9 electric follows in the footsteps of the LDV e-Terron 9 available overseas, it will be equipped with a 102kWh battery granting it a 430km driving range.Importantly, it plots a 3500kg towing capacity, which is more than can be said for the EV utes currently available in the market, like the Toyota HiLux BEV and its 2000kg towing ability. The existing combustion U9, powered by a 2.5-litre diesel engine, will also be offered in a new Black Edition trim level.Next, taking aim at the Tesla Model Y and newcomer rivals the Geely EX5 and GAC Aion V, is the S6 EV.It is essentially a scaled-up version of the S5 small SUV already on sale in Australia. The S6 moves into the mid-size SUV category, although maintains many of the same interior features as its smaller sibling,Right-hand drive specs as confirmed by the UK-market version of the car show a 77kWh battery pack with up to 530km of range in both rear-wheel drive and dual-motor all-wheel drive layouts. Also bolstering MG’s range of electric vehicles is an upgraded version of the rear-wheel drive MG4. Not to be confused with the just-launched MG Urban, which is in a lower price bracket in a front-wheel drive layout, the new facelifted MG4 will continue to cater to a slightly more premium and drive oriented audience, starting at $39,990 for the base Essence, and topping out at $47,990 for the returning XPower all-wheel drive version.Stylistically largely the same from the outside aside from new wheel and colour choices, the new MG4 will get a completely overhauled interior featuring a new 12.8-inch multimedia screen with wireless phone mirroring, a 10.25-inch driver display, as well as physical controls from the larger S5 SUV, new seat trims, and a more refined centre console treatment, with improved detailing throughout.Like the UK-market model, the new version dumps the entry-level 51kWh battery, with the base Essence now being a 64kWh proposition with an improved 452km WLTP driving range. It features a 140kW/350Nm electric motor driving the rear wheels, while the XPower features 150kW/250Nm on the front axle, and 170kW/350Nm on the rear axle it can sprint from 0-100km/h in 3.8 seconds. With the same 64kWh battery pack, the XPower’s range is reduced to 405km.

Next-gen popular van brings big update
By Tom White · 10 Apr 2026
Renault has confirmed its next-generation Master large van will launch in Australia mid-year.The new Master, a traditional rival to the Ford Transit and Volkswagen Crafter, is the first ground-up version in more than a decade, and will arrive in both diesel and electric forms. It has the traditional boxy visage of a large commercial van, but Renault says it has been designed in a wind tunnel for “optimal aerodynamic efficiency”. It also wears Renault’s new group design in its face, and has a completely overhauled cabin, complete with physical controls for key functions. The diesel version uses a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo layout (125kW/380Nm), paired to a nine-speed automatic transmission, which is more efficient and powerful than the outgoing 2.3-litre diesel (110kW/350Nm) paired to a six-speed single-clutch automatic. The Electric version uses a 96kW/300Nm electric motor powered by an 87kWh battery pack, which grants it a 400km range unladen, according to the WLTP standard. It can charge at a rate of 130kW, which should see it move from 10 - 80 per cent in about half an hour. The popular large van continues to be available in an array of bodystyles, with mid- and long-wheelbase versions as well as mid- and high-roof options.Payload is up to 1973kg for the diesel version, with a GVM of four tonnes, while the electric version is limited to a payload of 1164kg with a 3500kg GVM.The slide-opening side-door is wide enough to fit a pallet, while the bulkhead behind the cabin is flat to maximise interior space. It will also include an increase in safety equipment, and has been awarded a top platinum rating from EuroNCAP’s commercial vehicle rating scheme.Full pricing and specs for the large van will be announced closer to its expected June 2026 arrival. Expect a price increase over the outgoing model, which sits at $55,200 for the MWB or $57,200 for the LWB.It forms part of Renault’s “model revitalisation” plans to launch six new models in 18 months, which also includes the recently-launched Scenic E-Tech mid-sizer, and just-confirmed Symbioz small SUV.Thus far in 2026, the outgoing Master van remains reasonably popular in its segment, amassing 330 registrations, outselling the Ford Transit, Volkswagen Crafter, and Peugeot Boxer. It lands nearly on-par with the Fiat Ducato, but lags behind the ever-popular Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and budget-focused LDV Deliver 9.

Top-selling Chinese SUV tweaked overseas
By Tom White · 09 Apr 2026
Chery has revealed a facelifted version of the Tiggo 7 with some tweaks and upgrades in its Chinese home market.Confusingly, the Chinese domestic Tiggo 7 is offered in four distinct styles, with the car most resembling the Aussie-delivered version dubbed the Tiggo 7 Plus. This newly-updated version for the Chinese market is simply called the Tiggo 7 and exists in a lower price bracket.Outside it debuts a new and more modern look, with a new bar-style grille and sporty black styling highlights to replace the chrome.Inside it's is nearly identical to the Australian market version, although it gets a plaid look for its synthetic leather interior trim. It looks to have received software upgrades for the Chinese market, with a new home and nav screen for the digital instrument cluster.Interestingly, this base version of the Tiggo 7 for the Chinese market swaps the 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine (108kW/210Nm) and six-speed dual-clutch automatic combination found in the Australian car for a slightly more powerful version of the same set-up (115kW/230Nm) paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT).In China, this new car is also significantly more affordable than the Plus model delivered locally, with a low equivalent starting price of A$16,600 (likely to be closer to the low-$20k mark if it were to be exported to Australia).Meanwhile the entry-level Tiggo 7 Urban for Australia costs $29,990 drive-away.Chery’s local division has been contacted for comment on the potential for a Tiggo 7 facelift for Australia, although it seems unlikely given the local combustion car was recently updated with a fresh look to match the hybrid. It also dropped the 'Pro' from its name, simply becoming 'Tiggo 7' locally. The Tiggo 7 has sold 2323 units so far in 2026, beating out the MG HS, Honda CR-V, and hybrid-only BYD Sealion 6, but still trails the mainstream pack, including the Toyota RAV4, Kia Sportage, Hyundai Tucson, Mitsubishi Outlander, Nissan X-Trail, and even the GWM Haval H6.If the mid-sizer can maintain its momentum though, it will soon be ahead of the Subaru Forester, which it is behind by around 650 units.
