Major safety shock for family favourite
By Tim Gibson · 07 Apr 2026
The Nissan Qashqai is among several models to learn their safety fate as part of the latest batch of Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) ratings. The updated Qashqai family SUV has received a four-star rating, down from the five-star rating awarded in 2017.The Qashqai maintained a high child protection rating of 91 per cent, but it saw substantial drops in the Adult Protection, Vulnerable User Protection as well as Safety Assist categories. The 78 per cent Adult Protection rating was in significant part due the front structure of the car presenting a moderate risk to occupants of oncoming vehicles in the frontal offset test. Its Vulnerable Road User Protection rating was at 68 per cent, while its Safety Assist rating was 62 per cent. The incoming Suzuki e-Vitara was also hit with a four-star rating. The e-Vitara was the first Suzuki to be tested by ANCAP since the Fronx compact SUV. The Fronx was subject to a major recall following its one-star rating, with ANCAP urging people to not travel in the rear seats of the car. With a 77 per cent Adult Protection rating, the e-Vitara had marginal protection for the driver’s chest and adequate protection for the passenger’s chest, with good protection elsewhere. The car was also marked down due to the lack of a centre airbag, according to ANCAP.The safety regulator’s Chief Executive Officer Carla Hoorweg acknowledged the safety improvement from Suzuki.“It’s encouraging to see improvements in safety performance across the market, this latest rating achieved by the e-Vitara is evidence Suzuki can produce a model that offers sound levels of safety performance,” Hoorweg said. There were new five-star ratings for the revamped Audi A3 hatchback and the Q3 compact SUV. The A3 was awarded 86 per cent for Adult Protection and 80 per cent for Child Occupant Protection, while the Q3 got 87 per cent and 86 per cent, respectively. The other car to earn a five-star rating was the updated Cupra Leon hatchback. It received 88 per cent for Adult Protection and 86 per cent for Child Protection, with 82 per cent each for Vulnerable Road User Protection and Safety Assist.

Huge $8000+ price drop for EVs
By Tim Gibson · 07 Apr 2026
BMW has slashed the prices of its iX1 and iX2 electric SUVs in Australia. The iX1 will start from $77,900 (before on-road costs), while the iX2 will start from $79,900 (before on-road costs). There is a new variant of the iX1, which has a national drive-away price of $79,900.These prices mean both cars are now noticeably cheaper than they were. The previous iX1 started from $86,800 (before on-road costs) and the iX2 started from $87,600 (before on-road costs). This new variant of the iX1 comes with a ‘Sport Collection’ trim level, which includes features such as 19-inch alloy wheels and a white exterior paint. On the inside, there are synthetic leather seats, with the front ones heated, along with a head-up display. These deals make the iX1 and iX2 more price competitive with key rivals in the segment. The Volvo EX40, which recently picked up a price drop of its own, now starts from around the same drive-away price, although only for the single motor variant. Both BMW models are powered by dual electric motor set-up, producing 230kW and 494Nm. All models come as standard with an all-wheel drive system.  They also now come in substantially cheaper than the Mercedes-Benz EQA and Audi Q4 e-tron, which have starting prices of more than $80,000.One of the main changes on the iX1 and iX2 is hardware updates, which BMW said has enhanced power density and battery range. Official driving range for the new iX1 and iX2 have not been revealed just yet, but expect minor improvements on 464km and 395km, respectively as WLTP standards. The current generation of the pair can charge from 10-80 per cent in less than half an hour. The iX1 continues to be an important part of BMW’s EV range, claiming its best-seller status for the past few years. The iX2 has also been a good EV seller for the brand.BMW's X1 range (including the iX1) won the CarsGuide Car of the Year 2026 award for the small car sub-$80K.2026 BMW iX1 and iX2 pricing Australia

Most fuel efficient diesel utes
By Tim Gibson · 06 Apr 2026
Utes have been affected substantially by increasing fuel prices, thanks to their large fuel tanks and often thirsty turbo-diesel engines.Diesel fuel prices have jumped to more than $3 per litre, making filling up a diesel ute more expensive than ever.CarsGuide has compiled a list of all the diesel dual-cab pick-up utes on sale, calculating the yearly cost of each at $3.07 per litre (the average price in NSW on 31/3/26) over 15,000km.Isuzu Ute’s D-Max and Mazda BT-50 2.2-litre turbo-diesel variants are the efficiency leaders. The mechanically identical pair of utes cost $3038.02 in fuel in a year, averaging 6.6L/100km.The Ford Ranger’s single turbo-diesel 2.0-litre is next on the list, averaging 6.9L/100km, which equates to $3177.45 over 15,000km. The new mild hybrid Toyota HiLux also has a competitive efficiency figure of 7.1L/100km, which is a little cheaper in fuel than the standard turbo-diesel variants. Three-litre variants of the BT-50 and D-Max vary in cost, given fuel consumption fluctuates between 7.1L/100km and 7.8L/100km depending on the variant. The KGM Musso is one of the thirstiest of the utes, with its up to 9.0L/100km, costing more than $4000 over the course of a year.  The GWM Cannon Alpha diesel was the other ute to exceed the $4000 mark. Concluding the list are the gas guzzling full-size American pick-ups, in Ram’s 2500 and the Chevrolet Silverado HD. Both have V8 diesel engines with a capacity of more than 6.0-litres, meaning they cost more than $7000 over the course of a year.2026 ute fuel figures Australia  *Dependent on variant**Ram does not provide official figures for fuel consumption. Data shows the EV era has arrived
By Tim Gibson · 02 Apr 2026
Electric vehicle sales are booming in Australia as international and domestic factors contribute to substantial EV uptake. The Electric Vehicle Council (EVC) data for the first quarter of 2026 reveals EV sales are up 40 per cent compared to this time last year. In the first quarter of this year, Tesla and Polestar have sold nearly 8000 units between them, which is also a sizable increase on 2025 numbers. This number is likely to be even higher, with only Tesla and Polestar reporting to the EVC, meaning much of the ever-increasing range of electric cars are not part of this latest data set. Official data for April from VFACTS will be released next week. This includes strong selling EV models such as the Zeekr 7X, which has had a flying start to life in Australia, along with many electric BYD models. Tesla accumulated 3485 sales for March 2026, more than 600 extra units compared to March 2025. The Model Y SUV continues to be the brand’s most popular model, with 2818 units shifted in March 2026, more than 1000 up on the same time last year. Tesla will soon introduce a six-seater version of its best-seller called the Model Y L, which will arrive in the coming weeks. The Model 3 sedan has not had the same positive sales result as its SUV sibling, with a 40 per cent drop compared to the same period last year. Polestar has also not experienced the same sales increase, with its Polestar 2 and Polestar 3 experiencing sharp drop-offs, while Polestar 4 sales improved slightly. This latest data comes at a time when rising fuel prices are sending demand for EVs skyrocketing.EVC Chief Executive Julie Delvecchio said this latest data indicates an acceleration of the EV shift for Australia. “Volatile global oil markets are changing the conversation. Australians aren't asking whether EVs are the future anymore. They're asking which one they can get their hands on, and when,” Delvecchio said. This electric sale acceleration is also being brought on by the government's National Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES) which is placing pressure on brands to electrify their line-ups or face fines. Major brands have already started hiking prices on petrol units, while introducing new EV models to offset the potential impacts of the emissions-based scheme.

Game-changing battery the key to budget EVs
By Tim Gibson · 02 Apr 2026
A new type of battery technology could be about to take over the budget electric car industry. The sodium-ion make-up solves the problem of sourcing expensive and rare materials needed for lithium-iron batteries, while maintaining adequate driving range for smaller EVs.Sodium-ion batteries are further along the full scale commercialisation than solid-state batteries, which have been touted as the holy grail of electric cars, for example. Sodium-ion batteries have less energy density than conventional lithium-ion batteries such as Lithium-Ferro-Phosphate (LFP) and more advanced Nickel-Manganese-Cobalt (NMC) units, and much less than what is promised from futuristic solid-state cells. The big advantage is the ease of access and relative cheapness of obtaining sodium compared to lithium, which makes them an attractive choice. The difference in energy density means on a large scale, particularly for car batteries, LFP is often a cheaper choice. This is because substantially more sodium-ion battery cells are needed to make up the equivalent in LFP units.  The power advantage is diminishing, with energy density on sodium batteries expected to exceed 180Wh/kg in the near future. This means sodium batteries could be a significantly cheaper, and much more viable choice for car batteries, especially in smaller EVs, which do not require a substantial driving range. One of the other benefits of sodium-ion batteries is they are more resistant to extreme temperatures. This has been an issue in particular for NMC batteries, with multiple instances of these batteries not performing to expectations in unusually hot or cold environments. Mainstream Chinese battery manufacturer CATL recently introduced a sodium battery with an energy density of around 175Wh/kg, which is closer to energy density in lithium alternatives. Bridging the energy density gap between sodium and lithium batteries opens up the potential for sodium chemistry to be the go-to for budget EV carmakers.Sodium-ion batteries are also becoming cheaper to manufacture and could reach cost parity within LFP batteries within the next two years, according to reports out of China. This could be seen as the perfect battery make-up for smaller EVs, which are often already budget oriented, meaning the price of these cars could be brought down further. CATL began commercial production of its sodium batteries last year, and manufacturers are already jumping on board. CATL’s Naxtra sodium-ion battery offers a driving range of around 500km, while keeping the extreme temperature benefits of the technology. GAC is expected to utilise a unit from CATL in one of its upcoming EVs, according to a report in Auto News. GAC is one of many brands investing in sodium-ion, with other Chinese rivals such as BYD also developing the technology. BAIC has also been making moves with its battery, which can be fully charged in only 11 minutes. The German government has also put aside 20 million euros for a gigawatt-hour sodium-ion plant, with Mercedes-Benz one of the brands potentially benefiting.

Game-changing ute previewed
By Tim Gibson · 02 Apr 2026
Hyundai just unveiled its striking Boulder SUV concept at the New York International Auto Show. The concept gives a glimpse into Hyundai’s ladder frame chassis rugged off-roading future. The Boulder previews its first ladder frame model, which will be a mid-size pick-up truck built in the United States launching in 2030. A mid-size pick-up truck in the US means it will be a similar size to Aussie favourites such as the Ford Ranger, Toyota HiLux and BYD Shark 6.It looks like the new Hyundai ute will be targeted towards the North America market, with an Australian launch unlikely in the short term. This will be the brand's second ute, with a different model expected to arrive in Australia before 2030. Hyundai Australia boss Don Romano told CarsGuide late last year the brand would have a ute ready by the end of 2028. "My work permit goes for another two and a half years. I'm not leaving until it's coming,” Romano said in November 2025.“If they produce what we're talking about at this stage and what we're working on, it's gonna be mind blowing, it's gonna be great. And I really mean that, I'm not just blowing smoke.”It is anticipated to feature a range-extender hybrid set-up. The Boulder concept has a boxy overall design with accentuated fenders and beefed up 37-inch mud-terrain tyres to highlight its go-anywhere potential. The concept itself is similar to the general blueprint of the popular Ford Bronco, which is based on the Ford Ranger ute, and has been a raging sales success in the United States. Adding to this theme is the tailgate-mounted full-size spare wheel, along with roof racks and a roof-mounted light bar. This latest concept comes after US patents of a pick-up truck for the North American market surfaced online. One of the key elements these patents revealed was thought to be detachable doors. It now appears that the doors are in-fact coach-style, not detachable, meaning they open away from the centre of the car. This increases the practicality and loading capacity of the car, like on the old Toyota FJ Cruiser. The Boulder’s interior has a minimalist yet futuristic look, with no large tablet-like screens present, but it does have a panoramic head-up display, which spans the length of the front window.

China's new EV charging battleground
By Tim Gibson · 01 Apr 2026
Charging infrastructure is proving to be one major new battleground for Chinese carmakers.Segmentation of the car market in China is continuing to grow with increasingly diverse choices for buyers.Battery technology has been one of the most recent rivalries, with brands such as Chery and BYD boasting of solid-state development, quoting bigger and better driving range figures. It now appears charging infrastructure will be the latest area to experience intense competition.Tesla dominates the charging scene in China, with more than 11,000 public fast charging stations in the country.BYD has taken some steps towards breaking this Tesla hold, increasing its investment in the infrastructure substantially. It has begun rolling out its megawatt ‘Flash’ charging system, which has a peak output of 1360kW.According to the brand, the system can add roughly 400km of range in 5 minutes or charge at a speed of two kilometres every second. The system has a ‘T’-shape design, which differs from other fast charging systems as the plug outputs are mounted from the top of the structure rather than the side. The brand integrates existing charging infrastructure through partnerships, which has worked to speed up charging expansion. BYD has ambitions to install 20,000 megawatt-level flash charging stations by the end of 2026.In Australia, BYD is already plotting to introduce some form of megawatt charging according to comments recently made by the local boss of Denza, Mark Harland, by the end of 2027.Whether that is the first-generation or recently-unveiled 1300kW version. Aside from Tesla, BYD faces competition from the likes of Nio and CATL overseas, with the pair developing battery swap networks in China. This system rethinks the charging infrastructure problem by utilising a fully-robotic process to swap a depleted battery for a fully-charged one.It speeds up the battery replenishing process exponentially, with Nio stations swapping in just a handful of minutes. While this is faster than charging, these set-ups are much more expensive to install and maintain than chargers. In comparison to BYD’s lofty charger ambitions, Nio has less than 4000 swap stations, and took four years to install 1000 of them.

New RAV4's key detail finally revealed
By Tim Gibson · 01 Apr 2026
There is a new key detail of the soon-launching Toyota RAV4 hybrid, with fuel efficiency figures of the SUV now public. The car offers a combined fuel efficiency of 4.5L/100km for the front-wheel drive variant (4.6L/100km on all-wheel drive), which is better than the outgoing front-wheel drive model at 4.7L/100km and 4.8L/100km for the all-wheel drive. This increases the RAV4’s fuel efficiency lead over hybrid models of the Hyundai Tucson (4.8L/100km) and Kia Sportage (5.3L/100km).Urban fuel consumption sits at 4.2L/100km, while extra urban fuel consumption is at 4.7L/100km. The all-wheel drive’s figures are 0.2L/100km higher than the front-wheel drive. The new generation of the Toyota RAV4 is still being eagerly awaited in Australia, with the brand already running out of stock on the previous model. This has caused a substantial downturn in sales for the Australian branch to the tune of 25 per cent year-on-year up to March 2026.  The new RAV4 will roll out into Australian showrooms this year with hybrid variants too far away and plug-in variants coming in the third quarter. All variants will feature a 2.5-litre petrol engine, and come in front-wheel and all-wheel drive choices. The hybrid produces 143kW, while the plug-in hybrid boosts power to 227kW. It will start from $45,990 (before on-road costs) when it lands in Australia within the next few weeks. This means it will be more expensive than the cheapest Tucson and Sportage hybrid models. The RAV4 is a key contributor to Toyota’s sales as their biggest seller, which is more than the HiLux ute and roughly twice as many as the Prado large SUV. Toyota will continue to add more electrified models to its lineup this year, including an electric version HiLux ute.

New 430kW luxury brawler incoming
By Tim Gibson · 01 Apr 2026
Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the updated range of its GLE SUV.The car has received upgrades to performance and interior design for the latest edition of Mercedes’ high-end SUV. The current GLE on sale in Australia starts from $144,900 (before on-road costs), and is one of the brand’s best-selling models, outselling the C-Class sedan. Its range currently only consists of petrol and diesel, meaning it is likely a PHEV will join the Aussie lineup next. It appears the brand has cut the 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine from the lineup, in favour of more electrified options. This will likely result in a substantial price jump for the new cheapest variant of the lineup, the GLE 350d, which was not on sale in Australia previously. There is a revamped six-cylinder petrol engine, which has been refined to add further torque at 560Nm, with a new plug-in hybrid variant spawning out of the engine. The range-topping GLE 580 comes with a juiced up V8 engine, producing 395kW and 750Nm. Mercedes-Benz Australia has confirmed the new GLE will hit Australian showrooms some time in 2027. It is a rival to other luxury large SUVs such as the Audi Q7, BMW X5 and Volvo XC90. The Q7 and XC90 sit at the cheaper end of the luxury scale, while the X5 is about $5000 cheaper than the current Mercedes (before on-road costs). On the inside, there is a panoramic digital display across the dashboard, which comprises three 12.3-inch screens. There are also updates for the AMG performance variants of the GLE, which come with petrol and plug-in hybrid set-ups. The PHEV variant offers an increased output of 430kW and 750Nm, which can shift the car from 0-100km/h in 4.5 seconds.
