2014 Mercedes-Benz C-Class | more details
By Karla Pincott · 24 Oct 2013
The interior and fresh details have been revealed for the new Mercedes-Benz C-Class that will arrive here in the second half of next year, following its global debut at the Detroit motor show in January.Taking the fight to the Audi A4 and BMW 3 Series, Mercedes says the all-new car will be better specced, up to 100kg lighter and have 20 per cent better fuel-economy -- but without any sacrifice of power. The weight savings largely come from extensive use of aluminium body panels which has risen from nine per cent in the current model to 48 per cent in the new one, which partly counters the extra features and technology it gains. The upgraded interior styling borrows from Merc's flagship S-Class and the CLA-Class, with saddle-stitched upholstery and a raft of high-tech goodies led by a heads-up display that projects satnav, speed, adaptive cruise control status, speed limits and other information. There's a 7-inch (17.8cm) COMAND infotainment screen that can be optioned up to 8.4-inch 21.3cm), with a new 6.5x4.5cm haptic touchpad control.Innovative GPS-linked air conditioning can detect when it automatically needs to switch to recirculation -- to avoid ingesting, say, a tunnel's cloud of fumes -- and offers improved air filtering, ionisation and 'fragrancing'.Safety features include a front passenger airbag that disengages if sensors detect a child seat has been positioned there, plus an array of braking, parking, lighting, inattention and other warning and assistance systems including one that can read some traffic signs.Leading the options list is the electronically controlled Airmatic suspension system that lets you choose between four different firmness settings from cushy to extra-sporty -- or dial in your own combinations -- and automatically lowers the body at higher speeds to improve aerodynamics and economy.

See-Through System turns vehicles 'invisible'
By Karla Pincott · 23 Oct 2013
You can't see around corners, but you could be able to see through the traffic in front of you in the future. We've all experienced being stuck behind a truck on the highway, not able to see around them to check if it's safe to overtake -- wishing vehicles could be made as invisible as James Bond's Aston Martin Vanquish in Die Another Day.Researchers at a Portuguese university have the answer -- a system that projects an image of the road ahead of that truck onto your own windscreen. Called the STS (for See-Through System), it uses a set of cameras and vehicle-to-vehicle communication to display the image as a 'virtual windscreen'.The team from the University of Porto says STS uses low-latency video streaming and dedicated short-range communication to transmit the imagery swiftly, allowing the driver to see 'through' the vehicle blocking their line of vision. It depends on the vehicle in front of you having the system's cameras installed, which then wirelessly sends the footage in near real-time to a transparent monitor fitted on your own windscreen. However, an increasing push is being made into vehicle-to-vehicle communication and the extra safety it offers -- with carmakers testing systems that warn following traffic of accidents and other problems. So invisible cars may not remain the stuff of 007 daydreams.Watch the See-Through System video here. This reporter is on Twitter: @KarlaPincott

2014 Audi TT | spy shots
By Karla Pincott · 23 Oct 2013
Audi's third-generation TT is waiting in the wings for a 2014 reveal, but spy pics show there may not be too many surprises. The camouflaged prototype's body largely echoes the current TT, although front styling has been updated with a new larger grille flanked by sharper headlight clusters and the rear scores new LED lights, revised bumper and dual-tip exhaust. The car will be underpinned by the new lightweight scalable MQB platform from parent Volkswagen Group, which will be used for most of the VW Group vehicles with transversely-mounted engines. There's no confirmation of which units will appear under the TT model's bonnets, but the front-wheel drive base model is likely to be powered by a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder developing at least 160kW.Quattro all-wheel drive and cabriolet versions will slot in higher up the scale, and the sporty 221kW/380Nm turbo 2.0-litre from the Audi S3 and the 265kW/465Nm 2.5-litre from the current TT RS are on the cards, with the latter tipped to be getting a power boost of 20kW.This reporter is on Twitter: @KarlaPincott

Bogart's Casablanca car for sale
By Karla Pincott · 23 Oct 2013
Here's looking at you, Buick. The convertible driven by Humphrey Bogart in the classic movie Casablanca will go under the hammer in November as the star of a memorabilia auction. The 1940 Buick Model 81C trunkback convertible phaeton was one of just 230 built that year, and still has a desirably low odometer figure of about 42,000 miles (68,000km). The inline eight-cylinder engine was reconditioned -- along with most of the mechanical parts -- in the 1990s, and the brown canvas folding roof was replaced. However the interior shows water damage marks, and also burns in the cloth upholstery -- rumoured to be from Bogart's ever-present cigarette, so the new owner may decide not have the car reupholstered.Film house Warner Brothers also used the car in other movies, including High Sierra, but it's Casablanca for which it is best known -- appearing in a supporting role for the iconic "we'll always have Paris" farewell scene at the airport.Bonhams will put it on the block on November 25 as part of the What Dreams Are Made Of: A Century Movie Magic auction in New York, with an estimate of up to $500,000.That's a far cry from the millions paid recently for movie cars such as the replica Ferrari from Ferris Bueller's Day Off, and the James Bond Lotus Submarine -- bought by Tesla owner Elon Musk. And they didn't even come with Bogart's cigarette scars. This reporter is on Twitter: @KarlaPincott

Anki robot slot cars fight and learn | video
By Karla Pincott · 22 Oct 2013
The latest advance in car gaming isn't on your computer, or even on your phone. It's back on your floor -- yes, where it all first started with slot cars. But the similarity between slot cars and the new Anki Drive game stops with the floor. These racers don't need a slot, instead they use a mat with an embedded code that orientates and positions them, sending the data to tiny cameras on the cars. You still control them, but with an iOS app that lets you steer, accelerate -- and fire weapons at your rivals, including a handy tractor beam to wirelessly hook onto them. And their success isn't entirely tied to -- or limited by -- your skill with the controls. The Anki Drive cars use artificial intelligence to learn and improve while racing, making their own judgements on when to pass, scrape or block the competition.Race results give you points that can be spent on upgrading your car with higher performance specs and extra weapons. Those upgrades stay on the car permanently, becoming part of the robotic racer's character. But the game's upgrade system is structured so that no car can ever have all the upgrades -- so you have to make decisions about which characteristics you're prepared to do without -- and Anki says no two cars will ever be identical. If they look space-age, it's because they're from the pen of German master vehicle artist Harald Belker, who also designed cars for the Iron Man films, Transformers, the 1996 Batmobile, the Light Cycles from TRON Legacy, the Minority Report Lexus and even Inspector Gadget's Gadgetmobile. The Anki Drive starter kit goes on sale overseas this week through the company's website and Apple Stores, with two cars and a track mat for about $120. Additional cars cost about $80 each.Watch Anki Drive app-controlled cars learn while racing video hereThis reporter is on Twitter: @KarlaPincott

Red Bull V8 Supercar v stunt plane | video
By Karla Pincott · 22 Oct 2013
In the lead-up to this weekend's Gold Coast 600 V8 Supercars round, Red Bull has put the tourist destination's famous beach to far better use than working on a cancer-incipient tan. They've sent their star driver Jamie Whincup -- who could pick up his fifth V8 Supercar championship this year -- out for some sand training against an aerobatic stunt plane. Also watch: HSV Gen-F GTS v HSV VX GTS 300 v HRT V8 Supercar video And it's a close race. Very close... with the plane's deft pilot Joel Haski buzzing Whincup's V8 Supercar near enough to drift smoke across the roof. The V8 Holden wouldn't be your first choice for beach driving, and Whincup shows some spectacular skills in trying to keep it on the line in the slippery sand. Still, all good practice for the GC600 -- the first of the year's three final rounds in which he'll be looking for points to add a fifth crown. Watch the Red Bull V8 Supercar v stunt plane video here. This reporter is on Twitter: @KarlaPincott

Alfa Romeo 4C sets Ring record
By Karla Pincott · 21 Oct 2013
Alfa Romeo's 4C sports car has broken the Nurburgring record for the fastest lap by a production car with less than 250hp (187kW), completing the circuit in 8 minutes and 4 secondsPowered by a mid-mounted, highly-tuned turbocharged new-generation 1.75-litre engine -- developing 176kW and 350Nm -- the 4C undertook the challenge with Nurburgring veteran Horst von Saurma at the helm and jockeying the six-speed dual-clutch gearbox.Helping with the job was the two-seater's bantam 950kg weight, the result of liberal use of carbon fibre -- including a McLaren 12C-like passenger cell made from the material -- but with no modifications except being fitted with a set of high-performance Pirelli Zero Trofeo tyres. The rear-wheel drive hero is scheduled to arrive in Australia mid-2014, with prices likely to start around $80,000 -- depending on exchange rates. However there are still concerns it could be delayed as demand in overseas markets is putting pressure on supply. This reporter is on Twitter: @KarlaPincott

Lamborghini Veneno Roadster priced at $4.7m
By Karla Pincott · 21 Oct 2013
Lamborghini has released photos and details of its Veneno Roadster -- the open-air variant of the radical Veneno coupe built to help mark the brand's 50th anniversary. The hardtop saw a global debut at the Geneva motor show in March this year, and is being built in an edition of just four for $4.5 million. The Roadster will see a bigger production run -- okay, it's still just going to be nine vehicles -- and for the loss of the roof you pay about $200,000 more. Based on the Aventador, the Veneno shares its 6.5-litre V12 -- tuned to deliver 552kW of power (a lift of 42kW over the donor car) and 690Nm of torque, driving all four wheels via an automated manual transmission. The figures give the coupe the crown as the most powerful of Lambo's road cars, and the fastest, with a 0-100km/h time of 2.8 seconds and a top speed of 356km/h in both hardtop and open forms. The roadster is not far behind, with 2.9 seconds and 355km/h, and is able to match the coupe's performance because it's not hindered by its kind's usual weight penalty. It tips the scales at 1490kg, just 40kg more than the coupe, with liberal use of aircraft-spec carbon fibre using the brand's own forged production process that blends short threads of carbon into the resin and then pressure-cures it in heated molds in just minutes. The wedge body has an aerodynamic setup designed for extreme downforce and stability -- including a deep multiple-plane front spoiler, track-bred rear wing and finned engine cover -- but Lamborghini says the Veneno Roadster also has extremely low wind resistance. Ford Focus parks itself after you get out
By Karla Pincott · 21 Oct 2013
Manouevring your car into a tight parking spot isn't easy, but sometimes getting out of the car can be even more difficult. We've all had the experience of squeezing our bodies through a barely-opened door after getting our car into a narrow park. And with cars getting bigger while carparks -- many of them built decades ago -- stay the same size, it's going to be an increasing problem, along with the growing collections of body and bumper scrapes that come with it.However Ford is working on a solution with a car that can park itself, after you get out of it. The auto giant is not the first to probe the idea, and is following in the research footsteps of Chinese brand BYD, which showed off its remote-controlled park function on the small Su Rui sedan concept at the 2012 Beijing motor show. Watch the BYD Su Rui remote parking video here. Swedish carmaker Volvo is also developing a remote parking system, which it revealed on a V40 concept in June this year. Watch video of the remote parking Volvo here. However Ford may be the first to market with the technology, with the US brand currently testing the concept at its proving grounds in Belgium and being tipped to get it into showrooms within two years. The Ford Focus test car is fitted with cutting edge technology that remotely controls steering, forward and reverse motion and even gear selection. All you have to do is get out of the driver's seat and hold down a single button on the key fob.The process takes about 10 seconds with the parking system limited to a speed of 9km/h, and sensors around the body prevent it hitting obstacles while it’s under way. When you return to the car, you can simply reverse the whole process and the car slides smoothly and safely out of its spot.Ford says the remote parking would be a daily benefit in crowded cities. "It's trying to help someone squeeze into that space and allow them to have some automated help to help them achieve a driving manouevre they are going to have to do frequently in their life," Ford Europe vice-president of product development Barb Samardzich said. Watch the Ford Focus remote parking video here. This reporter is on Twitter: @KarlaPincott

Armoured BMW X5 is Security Plus
By Karla Pincott · 21 Oct 2013
Need to do the school run, but worried about having to dodge bullets -- and possibly machine-gun or mortar fire? It's a war zone out there, and you need a rolling fortress like BMW's armoured X5.Based on the third-generation X5 arriving here in November, the X5 Security Plus offers what BMW says is the world's first armoured 'Sports Activity Vehicle' to have a VR6 rating, meaning it's able to withstand attack from weapons like the AK-47 and simultaneous detonation of two DM51 hand grenades under the body. You'd never know, at a casual glance. The BMW X5 Security Plus  -- and its VR4-rated sibling, the X5 Security -- discreetly look like normal vehicles, and it would take a trained eye to spot the armoured enhancements. For the VR6 rating this means an armoured passenger cell built from high-performance steel, including sealed joints in critical areas to stop bullets or shrapnel. The glass is a security laminate about 3cm thick with an inner polycarbonate coating to prevent cracking, and the engine electronics are protected by ballistic-warding aramid mats. But there's no point in warding off an attack if you can't get away, so under the bonnet is a 330kW twin-turbocharged V8 petrol engine with drive going to all four wheels. They're shod with run-flat tyres,  foiling any plans to puncture tem and stop your escape, and giving you a range of 150km -- easily enough to get well away from even the toughest supermarket carpark altercation. The extra wardrobe brings extra weight and a higher centre of gravity, but BMW has adapted the chassis, electronic management and brake systems to cope --  and claims the Security models perform and handle similarly to normal X5s.There are also optional LED flashing front lights and rear LED messaging board, and while we can all think of some uses for these, they're available only to official authorities. The armoured X5s are already being used here and overseas by government departments, but are also being bought by private owners, BMW Australia says -- although they stop short of revealing how many are sold."It's quite low numbers -- it's quite a specialised area," BMW spokesperson Lenore Fletcher says. "They are used by governmental organisations around the world, but some of them do go into the private sector."Obviously the majority of people who buy those cars don't necessarily want us to talk about it -- they have high-security, high-profile clients and they need their privacy to be respected," she says.Fletcher says that the handover process for the Security models goes well beyond the full-tank-and-carwash you'll get from a normal new car dealer."We have our own special vehicles division here in Australia who have the knowledge of the vehicles and are able to do a fairly comprehensive handover to the client," she says. "But on an international basis there are also specialised areas, like a  security driving school with different levels of expertise -- because if you are going to buy one of the cars, you'll need to know how to operate them correctly."Fletcher would not be drawn on the full specifics of the training, but said it covered a range of terrains and conditions -- including night-driving, rain, snow and ice  -- all with a focus on a safe exit."The training is specifically designed to ensure the ongoing security of your passengers if you are in a situation that may compromise their security," she says. "It focuses on avoidance of accidents and intervention by other vehicles."However she is unable to give an idea of what this level of vehicular confidence will cost you, saying that the price depends on individual specification. And while the adage is that if you have to ask, you can't afford it, we think that if you have good reason to be asking the price of an armoured BMW, you probably can afford it.This reporter is on Twitter: @KarlaPincott
