Nissan's GQ Patrol was around in Australia from the late 1980s to the end of the '90s. Tough, no-nonsense, and highly capable off-road it's getting rarer, but remains a firm favourite in the second-hand market.

Toyota's LandCruiser 200-Series tends to steal the limelight as a second-hand, seven-seat, off-road SUV buy. But Nissan's V8-engined Y62 Patrol has a lot to offer.

Mazda's BT-50, once based on the Ford Ranger platform, is now essentially an all-new Isuzu D-Max with Mazda styling. As well, the new ute has a new look, a new engine (producing less power and torque than in the previous-generation BT-50), and it has a market-leading level of safety tech. The new D-Max has impressed us, but how will the BT-50, effectively the Isuzu's twin, perform on- and off-road?

Like other Japanese car makers post WW2, Nissan decided to take a Willys Jeep, reverse engineer it and come up with its own take on an off-road 4X4. Nissan’s GU (Y61) Patrol was on sale for an awfully long time even by the lengthy standards of four-wheel-drives which are generally renewed far less frequently than passenger cars. Even so, the GU’s innings from 1997 to 2016 when it was finally pensioned off, saw it live on past even the model that was supposed to supersede it (the Y62).

We test the updated Nissan Patrol on- and off-road to see if it can regain ground in its traditional tussle for 4WD supremacy with long-time rival, the Toyota LandCruiser. The big Nissan wagon has more safety gear, but it also has a heftier price-tag, so it is worth your time and money?
Toyota Fortuner 2021 review: GX off-road test

Toyota's Fortuner has never reached the sales heights of its stablemates the LandCruiser, Prado or HiLux, but while it may underperform in terms of sales, there is nothing especially bad about it. It's simply a solid seven-seat ute-based 4WD wagon. But now it's had a styling refresh, and it also has more power and torque, increased towing capacity, improved fuel consumption, and more safety tech.
Toyota Land Cruiser 76 Series wagon 2020 review

The 76 Series wagon is part of Toyota's legendary Landcruiser 70 Series line-up, a stable of purpose-built work- and go-anywhere off-roaders, much better suited to remote-area touring than they are to any kind of city-street posing. Is there still space for a no-frills 4WD with such narrow focus in a market full to the brim with increasingly sophisticated and over-equipped vehicles?
