The Transporter can be converted economically and successfully with the traditional mixer technology, which is cheaper than the current injection technology and that equates to a reduced breakeven mileage. THEY can't.. We contacted VW and were told that, while the company recommends you run the higher octane because it performs a little better, the vehicle will run perfectly well on ULP. The choice is yours.
I don't believe the problem is related to the engine itself, instead I would be looking at the fuel and electrical systems.
Check the PCV valve, it might need replacing. A faulty PCV valve can cause a problem like you are describing.
Check the catalytic converter to make sure it hasn’t collapsed internally and is blocking the exhaust flow.
