2024 Toyota HiLux Reviews

The current generation Toyota HiLux ute is perilously close to its tenth birthday and Toyota has moved to freshen up its appeal with a mild hybrid version of the SR5 grade. Does it make a difference and is it enough to change you mind about that Ford Ranger you've had your eye on?

The 2024 Toyota HiLux represents a small step in an EV-lite direction. Some new variants have 'V-Active Technology', a combination of a motor generator, 48-volt battery and DC/DC converter aimed at improving performance and fuel efficiency, compared to the standard HiLux's 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine. It's not a hybrid HiLux, but it's the closest thing you'll get until that arrives in 2025. 

Toyota's GR (Gazoo Racing) performance brand is spreading across the Japanese giant's line-up. Even the HiLux ute is getting in the act with a GR Sport variant designed to take the fight up to Ford Ranger Wildtrak and Raptor. But what's it like as a work truck?
