By Marcus Craft · 07 Jun 2026
Want to know a secret? It's possible to buy a big US-style ute without spending big US-style ute cash. The 2026 Foton Tunland is under six metres long and costs under $50,000. The top-grade Tunland has a 2.0L four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine, a 48V mild-hybrid system, front and rear diff locks and a stack of standard features. But is this budget-friendly workhorse too good to be true?

Game-changing BYD Mako confirmed
By Andrew Chesterton · 06 Jun 2026
BYD's potentially game-changing ute product is ready to launch, with the Mako readying for its international debut in September this year. The focus so far has been entirely in South America, where the Mako will arrive to battle vehicles like the Fiat Toro, with the Mako a car-based unibody utility that would sit below the ladder-frame Shark 6.That would put it on a collision course with everything from the Ford Maverick to the upcoming Corolla Cross-based ute from Toyota, codenamed Project 150D.In Brazil, the Mako is a plug-in hybrid producing an expected 175kW, and promising a circa-100km EV-only driving range, along with a choice of two- or all-wheel drive.A European launch also seems likely – though under the name Shark 5 – given patent filings have appeared in the EU. Reports also point to a flagship 1.5-litre PHEV variant producing 200kW of power being developed.Things are less clear in Australia, but the success of the Shark 6 in our market would surely have local executives excited by the prospect of expanding the range.Just this week, BYD's most senior executive promised a new model designed for Australia would launch here this year, telling CarsGuide that a "special model" was on its way."We have another special model, just for Australian customers," Liu Xueliang, Group Vice President of BYD and General Manager of BYD Asia-Pacific Auto Sales Division Liu told CarsGuide.Chief Operating Officer of BYD Australia Stephen Collins was pressed for more information, but would only say that the brand will “have more to say about that later in the year”.

Toyota's mini ute confirmed
By Dom Tripolone · 05 Jun 2026
Toyota's new mini ute has been spotted on public roads.Following on from the reveal of the little FJ LandCruiser, the company has now shrunk its ute.The Japanese brand has been leaving a trail of breadcrumbs that have led to a small SUV-based ute, and now there is proof it is really happening.Brazilian outlet BlogAuto has captured a small camouflage ute undergoing testing, some digital renders from kdesignag on Instagram give us an idea what it could look like without camouflage.and it is believed to be based on the Toyota Corolla Cross compact SUV.That means it is likely based on Toyota’s TNGA-C platform, which also forms the base for the Toyota Corolla, Prius and C-HR, too.Using that platform means the ute could have petrol, hybrid and plug-in hybrid options.US outlet AutoNews first broke news of a Corolla-based ute in the works in 2024.It claimed sources said a Corolla-based ute would debut in 2027. At the time Toyota US’s Chief Operating Officer Mark Templin said the company was looking at a small ute, according to The Japan Times."We could really do well in that segment, so we’re trying to do it,” Cooper Ericksen, a senior vice president in charge of planning and strategy at Toyota Motor North America, said in a separate interview with The Japan Times. "It’s a matter of timing,” he said.SUV-based utes have had a renaissance recently, following the segments decline earlier this decade when vehicles such as the Ford Falcon and Holden Commodore utes were hits Down Under. The Ford Maverick in the US is the best example. It is based on the Ford Escape SUV and has been a runaway success in North America.Unfortunately the Corolla Cross-based ute appears to be a Latin American model only for now. However, Toyota is also thought to be working on a larger RAV4-based ute recently.Toyota’s North American Chief Executive Officer Tetsuo Ogawa said it is definitely a consideration.“But for the compact truck? Definitely, we have such demand,” Ogawa said in an interview with AutoNews. “A RAV4-based pickup is an opportunity for us, and the dealers are waiting. “Maybe they say we need today or tomorrow, but it takes time.”

Australia-specific BYD model on the way
By Chris Thompson · 04 Jun 2026
One of China's biggest car brands has a special Australia-focused model set for reveal later this year.During the recent arrival of BYD’s Zhengzhou cargo ship carrying thousands of new BYDs for waiting customers, the brand’s global VP and local COO confirmed the brand has an Australia-only model on the way.Liu Xueliang, Group Vice President of BYD and General Manager of BYD Asia-Pacific Auto Sales Division, was asked by journalists about models designed with Europe in mind - like the BYD Dolphin G revealed a week ago -  and whether they could come to Australia.“We have another special model, just for Australian customers,” Liu told journalists via translator, but wouldn’t be drawn on further details.Chief Operating Officer of BYD Australia Stephen Collins said no more could be said yet, but that the brand will “have more to say about that later in the year”.Given BYD already has a model seemingly built for the Australian psyche, the Shark 6 plug-in hybrid ute, it’s not yet clear what the Oz-specific BYD could be.A strong possibility at this stage is the apparent monocoque chassis ute, which has been spied testing numerous times in camouflage.According to Chinese government documents, the brand is planning more capacity for a ‘plug-in hybrid pick-up’ at its Zhengzhou production facility, though it doesn't mention the Shark 6.Spy photos show the ute with what appears to be a front-end similar to the likes of the BYD Sealion 5, and a small tub at the rear attached to a car-like dual-cab set-up.What could be China’s severely belated answer to car-based utes like the Holden Crewman, though previous expectations were that this model would be sold in China as well as other markets where small utes are popular, like South America.BYD is, in any case, expanding its line-up of Shark 6 ute variants to nab more share in the persistently competitive category here in Australia, so we will have to wait and see whether more information comes to light around BYD’s special model for Australia.

Volkswagen Amarok 2026 review: W600 - Australian preview drive
By Jack Quick · 03 Jun 2026
We’ve been waiting a few years for Volkswagen and Walkinshaw to fully reveal its latest creation and now it won’t be long until it's on public roads.Following the success of the original Volkswagen Amarok W-Series of flagship utes, there has been a lot of hype surrounding what the German carmaker is planning for its current-generation model which shares its platform with the Ford Ranger.Dubbed the Amarok W600, Volkswagen revealed some initial details of this locally fettled ute late last year, but ahead of its launch in August, CarsGuide was given the opportunity to test out the ute at Holden’s former proving ground at Lang Lang, Victoria.Volkswagen and Walkinshaw claim the Amarok W600 is the ‘ultimate driver’s ute’ and it has been modelled as a more street-focused, performance model, like the previous Amarok W580S. This contrasts against key rivals like the Ford Ranger Raptor, Isuzu D-Max Blade, Mitsubishi Triton Raider and Nissan Navara Warrior which are off-road-focused.Highlight changes include new 20-inch alloy wheels that are 10 inches wide and wrapped with Michelin Pilot Sport 4 SUV tyres, a dual side-exit exhaust system, a bespoke Koni suspension set-up with a Walkinshaw tune and the fitment of a 22mm rear anti-roll bar.Other niceties include electric side steps, Walkinshaw embroidering on the leather-upholstered seats and aluminium sport pedal covers. The Amarok W600 has a tough and menacing stance. There are wider wheel arches to cover the fatter wheels, plus a unique front fascia with a W motif in the grille and a light bar connecting the headlights. One thing we don’t know yet is how much the tough looks and all of these performance additions will add to the price tag. For context, the current flagship Amarok Aventura caps out at $82,990, before on-road costs. The previous Amarok W580S was $7500 more than the Aventura at the time and if this price difference is carried over this could see the Amarok W600 be priced over $90,000.This is notable as the Ford Ranger Raptor is currently priced from $90,690, before on-road costs.Wherever VW lands will be interesting as the Amarok W600 has an unchanged 3.0-litre V6 turbo-diesel engine that’s available on other trim levels, as well as in the Ford Ranger. It produces 184kW and 600Nm which is 16kW less and 20Nm more than the previous W580S which also had a 3.0-litre V6 turbo-diesel but it was sourced in-house.Also unchanged are the braked towing and load-carrying capacities. Volkswagen has confirmed the Amarok W600 retains a 3500kg braked towing capacity and will have a payload capacity close to 1000kg.Exact figures, including the kerb weight, haven’t been confirmed yet.Something Volkswagen has locked in though is a standard-fit 17-inch steel spare wheel even though Walkinshaw ensured there is enough space to fit a full 20x10-inch alloy. This means you’ll likely need to travel at reduced speeds when it’s fitted. That’s not ideal for this type of vehicle. We had the opportunity to sample the Amarok W600 back-to-back with the regular Amarok TDI600 Style across a series of scenarios at Lang Lang and the differences are pronounced. One of the most obvious changes behind the wheel is the tyres which offer fantastic grip. They were put to the test on a rather rainy day and held up very well. Also impressive is the improved braking performance. It’s noticeably better than the regular Amarok and goes to show how much braking can change with different tyres as the braking system itself hasn’t been altered.Additionally another major area of change with the Amarok W600 is how it rides and handles. The Koni-sourced suspension and damper package helps make this ute feel a lot more planted during hard acceleration and braking.Plus, the rear anti-roll bar helps keep the ute flatter through the bends. As a result it's more confidence-inspiring to drive spiritedly. You can focus more on the driving ahead than what the ute is doing. My only criticism of the package is that you can feel more pimply bumps and road imperfections in the Amarok W600 compared to the regular Amarok. It’s unclear if this is the suspension, larger wheels or a combination of both.Plus it’s worth noting that Volkswagen and Amarok may still fine tune the suspension in this ute ahead of its launch in August.

Mitsubishi confirms American ute on the way
By Tom White · 01 Jun 2026
It is now clear what Mitsubishi has gained from allowing its Triton to become the base for the new Navara in Australia - Nissan will allow it to produce an American pick-up based on its upcoming next-gen Frontier. To be built alongside the Nissan in America, the new Mitsubishi will arrive alongside a planned overhaul to the Frontier due in 2028 with a new platform expected to also underpin Nissan’s next-gen XTerra 4x4 for the American market.Current information surrounding the next-gen Nissan platform suggests it could lean into both V6 power (similar to the incoming Patrol SUV) and also spawn a plug-in hybrid variant. For Mitsubishi, this is part of a wider strategy to split its model range in two as it searches for a new identity in a realigned Renault/Nissan alliance. It will split its range in two - with one range of models (like the XForce, Xpander and Destinator) focused on South East Asian (ASEAN) markets, and the other focused on higher margin markets Australia and the US, which Mitsubishi dubs the ‘Off-road group’.This realignment will see a total of 13 new models launched by 2031, seven of which will be for the off-road group. We know of at least three new models - this Frontier-based pick-up, the just-announced new-generation Pajero based on the Triton, and the long-hinted next-generation Delica people mover based on the Delica D:X Concept shown in 2023.Mitsubishi’s local GM of Product Strategy and PR Bruce Hampel told CarsGuide the brand was considering its options for the over-3500GVM category at the launch of its Aussie-upgraded Triton Raider, but it seems unlikely this would include a completely new American-sourced model.Instead, he suggested Mitsubishi was considering either factory or a licensed local upgrade for something a bit more heavy duty than what the Triton range currently offers. In addition, it seems more likely Nissan won’t be building its American-market Frontier in right-hand drive as part of its new ladder-frame platform overhaul, instead suggesting it would choose to import the Chinese-built Frontier Pro model as a Navara/Triton alternative as a plug-in hybrid exclusive to Australia. It would be well positioned to be more competitively priced, with the capability of the GWM Cannon Alpha while chasing the breakthrough success of the BYD Shark 6.In the meantime, Mitsubishi will have its hands full in Australia as it plots the launch of its next-generation Pajero full-size SUV as a new rival to the Toyota Prado, and the launch of its fully electric joint-venture SUV with Taiwan’s Foxconn, both due before the end of 2026.Locally, Mitsubishi has felt the impact of more affordable Chinese brands encroaching on its turf, with the brand down over 25 per cent this year. However, there are promising signs for the Japanese giant, with its Triton sales up healthy percentages year-on-year as welcome updates flow through and new variants are added to its line-up.Interestingly the brand is acutely aware of the challenges it faces across the disparate markets it plays in, even showing a slide which plotted its market positioning off-set against the “market-entry difficulty for Chinese OEMs” highlighting Australia as a ‘turn around market’ with high perceived brand value for Mitsubishi, but a low bar-to-entry for affordable Chinese rivals.

Mitsubishi spills on Ralliart return!
By Tom White · 01 Jun 2026
Mitsubishi has confirmed its performance ambitions for the Triton - and perhaps even its upcoming Pajero - won’t end with the locally-tuned Triton Raider, as it gears up for a long-teased Ralliart revival.Mitsubishi’s local GM of Product Strategy and PR Bruce Hampel said: “We’ve got aspirations to go a step higher again in the future if this thing proves to be successful.”Hampel said that “step higher” would be for both price and capability, and would “bring back some of that more emotional brand heritage”.He’s likely talking about Mitsubishi’s long-dormant Ralliart performance name, which may hinge on the success of a car like the Triton Raider. The company’s Japanese HQ had a close interest in the Triton Raider to gage the taste for a higher-priced Triton.“There are a lot of eyes in Japan that are eagerly following the progress of this program, or have been following it since we started. But now that we’re at the point where we’re on sale, they’ll be reviewing what’s happening with an eye to understand whether this type of model, which is new for Mitsubishi using a second stage modification process, is something that they can entrust their distributorships with to deliver successfully with local expertise.“When it’s successful, there are going to be opportunities to go further and expand more, both within Australia and potentially into other global markets as well,” Hampel said. The first port-of-call for the Premcar tuned Raider could be New Zealand with an eye to going even further in the future. The Premcar-tuned Triton Raider is a significant overhaul and the new flagship for the ute’s range in Australia. It includes beefed-up suspension with custom-developed shock absorbers, an increase in ride height, a larger profile all-terrain wheel and tyre package, a 20mm overall increase in width, and various genuine accessories added on to increase the visual appeal. It costs from $74,990, moving Triton into unforeseen pricing territory, a $9400 step-up from the previously range-topping GSR trim level. So what would it take for a Ralliart model to earn its place at an even higher price-point than that? Hampel has some thoughts.“We stopped short of putting the Ralliart badge on this vehicle because we were mindful of what customer expectations are of the Ralliart brand," he said.“And the Raider, while we expect it to resonate very well with customers, it’s more typical of what customers do with typical aftermarket modifications to create the style of vehicle they will then go and modify further.“We didn’t feel it was quite worthy of the Ralliart branding. But we do have alignment with Mitsubishi Motors to continue the study and to reinstate the Ralliart brand in Australia and re-install it, properly, globally as well.“So we’re in constant discussion with them and working on those next-level programs but we’ve got to prove what we can do, and what we’ve done so far.”One thing Hampel confirmed was there would be no Ralliart without more power than is currently on offer from the Triton’s 2.4-litre turbo diesel (150kW/470Nm).“Ralliart needs more uniqueness to the vehicle in terms of its appearance, higher levels of suspension sophistication, and ideally more performance from the powertrain,” he said.“The engine is the most difficult one to not have fully done by the manufacturer, with the extensive durability testing, and it’s very expensive to go through that whole process.“Yes, Premcar can do it, but it comes at a significant cost, so to do that you really need global behind us with their view to a global market with that kind of product.”As to what that could look like? Hampel pointed to a potential hybrid solution.“With the change to electrified options as well, that opens up a different path to having a step-up in performance level,” he said.“As we transition into HEVs, PHEVs, and ultimately BEVs and these types of vehicles we could use electrification as the differentiator.”Next for Mitsubishi in Australia will be the long-awaited arrival of the next-generation ground-up Pajero 4WD, and a fully electric small SUV from its joint-venture with Taiwan’s Foxconn, both due to be on-sale before the end of 2026.

More BYD Shark 6 variants incoming
By Stephen Ottley · 31 May 2026
BYD is poised to step up its attack on the ute market, with a raft of possible Shark 6 expansion models under consideration. The Chinese brand’s decision to triple the Shark 6 line-up with the new 2.0-litre Performance model and the Cab Chassis variant is only the beginning of its growth plans for the popular ute.BYD Australia Chief Operating Officer Stephen Collins said the company is focused on expanding the appeal of the plug-in hybrid ute to potential fleet customers in the short-term, with more options on the table beyond that.“There's more sub-segments that are pretty obvious that we're talking to HQ about,” Collins told CarsGuide.“So nothing I can confirm at this point, but yeah, we're certainly looking to continue to grow where it makes sense in the range. So whether that be at the top, whether it be at the bottom, whether it be certain mining-spec cars or whatever it may be, definite opportunities there. And because we're the lead market I think we have a lot of pull in what we can bring to the market.”The addition of the Shark 6 Performance means the ute can now tow up to 3500kg, opening the market to customers who tow larger items, such as ‘grey nomad’ caravaners and other tradespeople. While the new Dynamic Cab Chassis gives the Shark 6 more appeal to tradies and fleet customers in need of a specific solution at the rear instead of the integrated tub.Collins wouldn’t be drawn on any specific areas where the Shark 6 range could expand to, but did underline just how important growing its share of the lucrative fleet market is.“I think the obvious one has been fleet. We said last night that 35 per cent is about the norm. We've been at 10, we're now at 20 . So I think fleet is probably the obvious one where we've really been missing out, and we've established a fleet department. We work closely with our retail partners. We've probably got, in combination with our retail partners, we've probably got 25 people working on fleet. So that's the obvious one.“I think we just appeal broadly now, and I think there's just more opportunity as the car's only been in the market for 14-15 months. We've quickly gained, I think, a strong reputation getting on the shopping list. And I think now we're just getting on the shopping list of more tradies, grey nomads, families who just want to go camping, sparkies, just all of the above. And I think this just widens the appeal.”One likely option would be installing the new 2.0-litre petrol engine in the Cab Chassis, which would allow it to tow up to 3500kg, instead of the current 2500kg. Collins wouldn’t confirm such a variant was locked in, but did say it was “on the radar” for the brand.
