The Leapmotor C10 REEV has entered the Chesto family garage, and it’s a model I’m pretty interested in. Well, its powertrain specifically. And that’s because I suspect I’m a lot like most of you; all aboard the EV train, right up until we find ourselves too far from the bright lights of the city.See, an EV mostly makes perfect sense for our little urban family, and when I have one through the garage I generally charge it once a week, if that. The suburbs are an EV’s best friend, and we can take seemingly limitless short hops before needing to top up.I say ‘mostly’, because (and this is just a hard fact of EV ownership, so don’t shoot the messenger in the comments) they are indisputably more annoying than their ICE-powered counterparts on really long trips.We duck off down the NSW South Coast every now and again – about 2.5 hours from our place in Sydney – and it’s on these adventures that I sometimes forget the ease of EV life in the city and begin cursing the lack of regional charging infrastructure, and pondering why my wife doesn’t enjoy spending her holidays sipping bad coffee in a service station forecourt while we wait to top up.The C10 REEV, though, promises to fix that. I’ve got the fancy Design variant (currently $47,990, drive-away, but usually $47,888, before on-road costs). And the REEV bit — or Range Extender Electric Vehicle — refers to the fact its rear-mounted electric motor is supplemented by a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine that acts as a mobile power generator for the C10’s 28.4kWh lithium iron phosphate battery.In simple terms, it drives like an EV, but when charge is low the engine kicks in to provide power to the battery. I have driven my C10 with a near-flat battery, and it keeps moving – albeit very gingerly at first as the battery recharges. And I’ve driven it with no fuel, surviving just on battery power. And both work, suggesting it really does offer a pretty comprehensive safety net for those motoring incompetents like myself who insist, against all odds, that we’ll make it to the next fuel station/public charger before we run out of juice.Leapmotor reckons that, with battery and tank topped up, you can expect a combined driving range of 1150km, albeit according to the more lenient NEDC testing protocol. Still, my car has promised a range of about 1000km via its on-board computer.There is a catch, though, and that is that you need to treat it like an EV and keep it topped up, because otherwise you’ll be using a lot of fuel. My test car’s on-board computer says over the last 2613km the REEV has averaged 7.3L/100km of fuel, which is worse than a good conventional hybrid. Get real lazy with the electrons and things are tougher still — I’ve seen 12.3L/100km pop up, which is almost dual-cab ute country.Still, the Leapmotor shouldn’t be punished for its owner’s laziness. It says EV in the title, so plug it in judiciously and you should see those numbers plummet, which is exactly what I’m doing from here out, so stay tuned for the next dispatch.What Leapmotor should be punished for, though, is the worst keyless entry system I have ever encountered. Mostly because it’s not keyless, and you can barely enter.The brand provides a credit-card-style fob which has no buttons. Easy enough, you think, because the proximity lock and unlock must be flawless. Um, nope. It doesn’t have that. Instead, you need to hold the card against a small square on the driver’s mirror to unlock the car as well as lock and switch off the vehicle. I discovered the latter when I got a call from my neighbour at 10pm asking me why my car was lighting up the street like a UFO landing.Now, to fully understand my hatred of this system, you need to know a little more about my life. We have a 14-month-old son, and so my relationship with Woolworths and Chemist Warehouse is at VIP level. And when we get back from the shops, I need to grab my son from his seat, grab the groceries from the boot, then carry both to the driver's door, dig around in my pocket for the card, and then lock the door. And then the same in reverse when we try to leave the house. It would be tricky if I had three arms, and it's near impossible with just the two I've got.Happily, Leapmotor does have an app that you will be downloading immediately, allowing you to lock and unlock the car remotely, as well as pre-cool the cabin.With all of that sorted, the C10 REEV has slipped pretty comfortably into our family life. There’s enough backseat space to comfortably fit my son’s baby seat, and the boot will swallow a pram with space to spare for shopping and all the other stuff we now require.So far on the road the Leapmotor has proven pretty easy living, too, with the power (158kW, down slightly on the all-EV version of the C10) ample for getting up and moving. Comfort over athletic capability is the order of the day, though, with some floatiness to the ride. The brake pedal also takes some getting used to. Presumably there’s some internal tussle over how the regenerative braking should respond to my foot, but the pedal can at times feel worryingly spongy, then overly grabby.But I think I’ve now got the getting-to-know-you stuff in hand, so we push on into month two to see how this relationship develops. And it could be important – if I make my wife sit by a dusty charger somewhere too many more times, it might well be my only relationship.Acquired: January 2026Distance travelled this month: 650kmOdometer: 2613kmAverage fuel consumption this month: 7.3L/100km

‘Endaka’ is the Japanese term for an expensive yen, and with the country’s currency hovering near 20-year lows in key financial markets it’s returned to common usage across Japan’s export industries, including automotive manufacturing.Throw-in high import tariffs in the United States as well as aggressively priced and specified rivals from China and it’s no surprise some Japanese car brands are working to ‘fine-tune’ the specification and production process for some of their key models.For example, Mazda has made no bones about the fact it’s selectively trimming materials and altering manufacturing techniques to lower per-car costs.Speaking with Automotive News, Mazda Global CFO (and former CEO of Mazda North American Operations) Jeff Guyton cited a change “customers won’t see, to protect profit margins” on its updated CX-5 SUV.The example relates to the leather on Mazda’s current steering wheels being cut precisely and sewn on a curve so the stitching lines up horizontally.Mazda said it found people don’t value that detail finishing more than the cheaper angled stitching used by rivals, so the discipline has been abandoned in the new CX-5 to lower costs.“That’s great attention to detail from Mazda, but when we look at it, our customers are not really valuing that approach more than our competitors, but it costs us more money.”“Our competitors have an angled appearance to the stitches but the same leather,” he said.And Guyton confirmed it’s one of “many, many, many” unseen cost cuts in the new CX-5.“Simply, we put money where the customer is going to see it, and we’ve tried to find big cost efficiencies where the customer doesn’t value it as much or won’t see it,” he said.It’s worth noting Mazda has form in this department.Through the 1990s a volatile yen reached record highs and lows, culminating in the Asian Financial Crisis late in the decade.And after arriving in the early ‘90s, Mazda’s diminutive 121 sedan was a prime endaka victim.Affectionately referred to as the ‘bubble’ or ‘jellybean’ Mazda it started life in Australia as a 1.3-litre offered with a standard five-speed manual gearbox or four-speed automatic transmission.But despite the fact a 1.5-litre option joined it a few years later, cost-focused changes began to emerge as the decade progressed. No clear coat on the paint around the boot aperture, unpainted grey plastic bumpers and side mirrors instead of color-keyed ones and deletion of plastic wheel covers leaving the 13-inch steel wheels exposed on lower grades.Tachometers were removed from base models, sound-deadening material was reduced and interior trim was changed to a cheaper fabric. Base models became manual-only and power steering was made optional.Line up the first and last examples of that DB-Series Mazda 121 and the differences would be stark. So, it will be interesting to keep an eye on the new CX-5 as Mazda looks to its world-wide top-selling model to help it return to profitability after recording a loss across the first nine months of the Japanese financial year (April to March).

The next-generation Toyota Highlander — known as Kluger here — three-row SUV has been revealed in the United States as an electric-only model.A spokesperson for Toyota Australia said there are no current plans to add the Highlander to the range Down Under. That does not definitively rule out the new-generation Highlander as an option for Australia in the future.The new model will ditch hybrid power, so its unsure if Australia's US-sourced Klugers will continue.An electric Kluger would offer Toyota a three-row SUV EV rival to the likes of the Hyundai Ioniq 9, Kia EV9 and Volvo EX90 in Australia. The top-spec all-wheel drive model has two electric motors, producing 252kW and 438Nm.There are two battery choices on the Highlander, which are a 77kWh with 462km of driving range and a 96kWh battery with a range of 515km. It is also available in a single motor, front-wheel drive layout.The 2027 Highlander is built on the TNGA-K platform, rather than Toyota's electric car platform that has spawned other models such as the bZ4X.The incoming RAV4 plug-in hybrid launching in Australia this year is also built on the TNGA-K platform, which opens the door to a future EV version.It has similar design elements to the new-generation RAV4 and Prado SUVs, with a boxy look and sharp creases in the bodywork, riding on 19-inch wheels. Overall, the car is bigger than its predecessor, but it sits slightly lower than the outgoing Highlander/Kluger. On the inside, it comes as standard with a 14.0-inch central touchscreen and 12.3-inch digital driver display.The seats are covered in a synthetic leather, with the front seats heated as well as the steering wheel. The car is expected to officially launch in the US towards the end of 2026 and the start of 2027.

Mercedes-AMG’s avowed passion for small capacity turbo-petrol four-cylinder engines in some of its most high-profile models appears to have cooled with the arrival of the new GLC53 powered by a stonking ‘twin-charged’ 3.0-litre, in-line six-cylinder.Highlighting the new engine’s “high-revving character” and “powerful, sonorous sound”, AMG has clearly responded to the lukewarm reception its undoubtedly powerful but relatively low-key 2.0-litre four-cylinder engines have received since the C63S E Performance launched globally in late 2022.Replacing the four-cylinder GLC43 and (for now, the) GLC63S E Performance, the new GLC53 is powered by a revised version of the 3.0-litre in-line six used in the E53 sedan featuring an exhaust gas turbo and an electric auxiliary compressor as well as a switch from full plug-in support to mild-hybrid assistance via a 48V starter-generator in the nine-speed dual-clutch transmission.Undoubtedly designed to prioritise the combustion part of the hybrid equation, mods include a new cylinder head with improved intake and exhaust ports, a new intake camshaft and a larger volume intake system as well as an upgraded intercooler. As a result, the new five-seat SUV hot rod produces 330kW (442hp) from 5800-6100rpm and 600Nm (640Nm on overboost) from 2200-5200 rpm.For reference, the outgoing GLC43 is rated at 310kW/510Nm with the GLC63 AMG S E-Performance pumping out a staggering 500kW/1020Nm.The GLC53’s integrated starter-generator provides a short-term boost of 17kW/205Nm, at the same time facilitating “recuperation, gliding and the almost imperceptible restarting of the engine during the start-stop function”.Drive goes to all four wheels via a “fully variable” AWD system including an electronically controlled rear-axle limited-slip differential. Claimed 0-100km/h acceleration is a rapid 4.2 seconds.The (steel) suspension tune includes a specific spring-damper set-up and adaptive adjustable damping via separate valves for rebound and compression. Rims are 21-inch shod with Z-rated Michelin Pilot Sport 4 SUV rubber (265/40 fr - 295/35 rr) and braking is by ventilated discs (390 fr - 360 rr) with four-piston fixed calipers up front and single-piston floating calipers at the rear. The Mercedes-AMG GLC43 4Matic is currently priced at $147,500, before on-road costs, and Mercedes-Benz Australia told CarsGuide the GLC53 is due to land locally in the fourth quarter of this year.

Kia will launch six EVs across 2026 as the Korean brand builds an all-electric lineup to rival Chinese brands such as BYD.The move forms part of Kia's incremental growth strategy for 2026, with the New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (or NVES) unlocking niche electric vehicles that would normally be locked out of the Australian market. That includes the just-launched Kia EV4 Sedan, for which the brand is forecasting 700 annual sales – a number significantly lower than would be expected from the brand's bigger EV sellers, but which will critically still contribute to its fleet emissions under the new regulations.But the EV4 Sedan is just the start of Kia's EV story in 2026, with another five models planned for launch before the end of the year.First up will be a mid-life facelift for the EV6, including the EV6 GT, which will nab a bigger battery for more driving range, and across-the-board access to the Kia Connect app for remote vehicle access.Previously, the EV6 and EV6 GT launches were staggered, but this time all will arrive at once before the end of Q1 this year."They will arrive all together. Previously we started with the EV6 and then the GT, but this time it will be all at once," says Roland Rivero, General Manager of Product Planning at Kia Australia."The Kia Connect system is something that our owners have been asking for."That story then continues with the fire-breathing EV9 GT, which will lend serious performance to the brand's biggest electric offering, with the GT variant sporting dual electric motors that produce a combined 374kW and 740Nm. That means the 2.6-tonne beast will clip 100km/h in an astonishing 4.5 seconds. Other fun stuff includes an electronically-controlled limited slip differential, adaptive suspension, performance brakes and simulated gear shifts, a bit like you'd find in the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N.Next is the PV5, Kia's funky-looking electric van, which will arrive in Q2. The cargo variant will be first to arrive, with the medium van offered with three battery sizes and a working range in excess of 400kms. It will be followed by the passenger version – offered with two battery choices – which will arrive later."It gets a passenger variant with seven seats towards the back end of the year," Mr Rivero says. Finally, and also towards the end of the year, the EV5 will get its first update, though details are scarce for now. Also coming in 2026, though not strictly an EV, is the third-generation Kia Seltos, this time with a hybrid.And all of this, says Kia, will grow the brand's share in an otherwise stable market."In regards to 2026, it's our intention to grow. Where do we get market share? It will be what we've done over the past decade, we'll be gouging market share from anyone we possibly can," says Kia Australia CEO, Damien Meredith.

High demand and the production volume to meet it has pushed two emerging challengers in the Australian new vehicle market to even greater heights in the first month of 2026.With 2025 new model additions including the Shark 6 ute, city-sized Atto 1 electric hatch and compact Atto 2 EV SUV, as well as the larger pure-electric Sealion 7 and plug-in hybrid Sealion 8 SUVs, BYD’s year-on-year sales for the month of January grew by a spectacular 640.9 per cent.In outright numbers, that’s 5001 units sold compared to 675 in the same month last year.In particular, the Sealion 7’s popularity has seemingly put the squeeze on several established medium SUV contenders like the Honda ZR-V (-15 per cent), Kia Sportage (-30.7 per cent), Nissan X-Trail (-34.2 per cent) and even the normally segment-leading Toyota RAV4 (-65.4 per cent), the latter two in run-out mode.Given the pure-electric Sealion 7’s size, specification and starting price ($54,990, before on-road costs), arguably its most direct competitor is the Tesla Model Y (from $58,900, BOC), the latter down 38.1 per cent in January, the BYD outselling it four to one (1171 units to 288). At the same time, Chery more than doubled its January sales (+105.8 per cent), largely thanks to the ongoing success of its Tiggo 4 Pro, which comfortably led the small SUV category ahead of 2025 segment heavyweights like the Hyundai Kona, GWM Haval Jolion and MG ZS.With a starting price of $23,990, drive-away, it’s not hard to see why the Tiggo 4 Pro, easily the most affordable small SUV in the country, has made such an impact. Again, some long-standing players in this part of the market like the Mazda CX-30 (-3.9 per cent), Mitsubishi ASX (-90.9 per cent, in new model ramp-up) and Subaru Crosstrek (-22.8 per cent) took a backwards step, year-on-year.Another solid improver from China for January sales was GWM (+31.3 per cent), while other volume brands, LDV (-19.5 per cent) and MG (-16.5 per cent), declined.

The Geely Galaxy M7 plug-in hybrid SUV has just been unveiled in China with a staggering combined driving range of 1730km, according to CarNews China. It is unclear at this stage whether the Galaxy M7 will make its way to Australia, but it would be another rival in the crowded SUV segment. A spokesperson for Geely Australia said there is no news to share on the Galaxy M7's potential to launch in Australia.It is a little bigger than the EX5 all-electric SUV the brand currently has on sale in Australia. The EX5 proved to be one the most popular EVs in Australia in 2025 despite only going on sale in March. The Galaxy M7 is closer in size to the Haval H6 plug-in hybrid and Leapmotor C10 alternatives, which both start from under $50,000. The car has a 1.5-litre petrol engine which produces 82kW and an electric motor, with a top speed of 180km/h.It will employ a lithium-iron-phosphate battery pack, with 18.4kWh and 29.8kWh options, and an electric-only driving range of 225km. There are also DC fast charging capabilities.The car when fully charged offers fuel consumption of 3.35L/100km. The exterior design of it shows a sweeping overall look, a large sunroof and a light strip along the front of the car. On the inside, there is a separate digital driver display and large central touchscreen, along with 50W wireless phone charging. Geely unveiled the Galaxy M9 large SUV in China in September 2025, which boasted a similarly spectacular range of 1255km. It was the first of Geely’s expanding Galaxy M-series range, now being joined by the M7. The brand has been working on other high driving range models, such as the Galaxy V900 people mover, which is also yet to be confirmed for Australia.

Subaru Australia has finally announced it’s launching the Trailseeker electric SUV in Australia in the second quarter of 2026.This will be the Japanese carmaker’s second electric vehicle (EV) in Australia, following the related and slightly smaller Solterra electric SUV.You can now register your interest for a 2026 Subaru Trailseeker on the carmaker’s local website. Pricing and specifications will be announced closer to its launch.The 2026 Subaru Trailseeker was first revealed in 2025 alongside the updated Solterra at the New York International Auto Show. It’s being offered in Europe as the E-Outback.With a total system output of up to 280kW, the Trailseeker is set to be Subaru’s fastest accelerating production vehicle offered to date. It’s claimed to be able to do the 0-100km/h sprint in 4.4 seconds.Additionally it offers 211mm of ground clearance and a 1500kg braked towing capacity.The dual electric motors are fed by a 74.7kWh CATL-sourced lithium-ion battery, which Subaru claims allows for up to 533km of range, according to ADR testing.AC charging is available at rates up to 22kW and DC charging is available at rates up to 150kW. Using the latter a 10 to 80 per cent charge will take around 30 minutes.The Trailseeker also offers 1500W vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability.“Trailseeker is the EV with personality. As the name suggests, this is the vehicle for drivers seeking adventure, who want to enjoy an engaging performance drive, all while remaining grounded in the confidence, safety and all-terrain capability that defines Subaru’s DNA,” said Subaru Australia General Manager Scott Lawrence.“It shows that electric performance doesn’t have to come at the expense of confidence, control or real-world capability – the qualities our customers expect from a Subaru. And being the quickest Subaru production vehicle ever it’s a fun and engaging drive in all conditions“Trailseeker stays true to Subaru’s DNA, while opening a new chapter through electric power, offering even greater choice for our customers.”The Subaru Trailseeker is virtually a twin under the skin with the forthcoming Toyota bZ4X Touring which is set to arrive in Australia around a similar time.Toyota and Subaru collaboratively developed the bZ4X and Solterra, as well as the bZ4X Touring and Trailseeker.As noted above, local pricing and specifications for the 2026 Subaru Trailseeker will be announced closer to its launch.
