Mini utes are the hottest new trend in motoring, and a brand new name has been added to the crush of bite-sized workhorses.Slate Auto is a new electric car company backed by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, and its first vehicle will be the modular Slate Truck. It was first revealed in April, 2025, but there has been crickets every since ... until now.The Slate Truck is a little single-cab ute that can be converted into an SUV.It is a bare bones proposition with a starting price of US$24,950 ($36,200), which is several thousand more than originally promised.Turning it into an SUV with seating for five, but still two doors, lifts the price to US$29,950 ($43,450).The Slate Truck uses a 63kWh Lithium-Ferro-Phosphate (LFP) battery that delivers a driving range of up to 330km. It can absorb up to 120kW via a DC fast charger or 11kW when connected to a compatible AC charger.Power comes from a single rear electric motor that produces 135kW and 264Nm.It has a handy payload of 700kg, which drops to 570kg for the heavier SUV, with the tray a similar length to a dual-cab ute. It can tow up to 900kg.Its rear-wheel-drive layout means there is a useable cargo area under the bonnet, which trumps any diesel- or petrol-powered ute out there.Slate will begin delivering Trucks at the end of the year in the US. There is no word on if the vehicles will be exported to Australia.Slate is preparing to sell their vehicles direct to customers, with no conventional dealerships. This could make expanding globally easier, especially given Bezos’ expertise in global e-commerce.The Slate Truck isn’t the only small ute in the world, with BYD, Ford and Toyota all building new work ponies.This new breed of small utes isn’t built on a rugged ladder frame that is designed to handle serious off-roading, but are car-based utes in a similar vein to the old Holden Commodore and Ford Falcon utes.Ford’s new electric small ute has been spotted testing in the US and is the first vehicle from its new Skunkworks, which was created to develop the new low-cost electric vehicle platform. It is due to launch in 2027, with Ford aiming for a circa-US$30,000 (A$42,600) price tag.This would join its hybrid Maverick ute, which has been a smash hit in the US.Toyota has been caught testing a new Corolla Cross-based ute in South America, and is again expected to launch in Latin America next year.It is expected to be based on the company’s TNGA-C platform, which would grant it access to the Prius’ plug-in hybrid set-up, as well as the tried-and-tested 2.0-litre self-charging hybrid set-up.BYD has also confirmed the Mako ute, which is expected to burst out of South America.In Brazil, the Mako is a plug-in hybrid producing an expected 175kW, and promising a circa-100km EV-only driving range, along with a choice of two- or all-wheel drive.A European launch also seems likely – though under the name Shark 5 – given patent filings have appeared in the EU. Reports also point to a flagship 1.5-litre PHEV variant producing 200kW of power being developed.

You know things are getting serious when a US pick-up style ute’s towing capacity reaches the 8.0-tonne mark.And that’s exactly what’s happened with the introduction of a factory 5th Wheel Hitch option for the MY26 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD.The new feature will be available from Q3 2026 build, offering the choice of a 50mm pin coupling or a 3.0-inch ‘gooseball’.As the name implies, a pin coupling uses a solid vertical pin and is best suited to off-road or agricultural towing, while a gooseneck ball uses a large, heavy-duty ball-and-socket connection in the load bed and is more appropriate for large on-road trailers.The package incorporates a factory air brake system “specifically designed, tested and installed as an integrated package.”It includes a chassis structure and bed attachment plate, added trailer connectors at the front of the load bed, trailer brake airlines and additional interior controls and warning lights for the driver.Once the 5th Wheel Hitch option box is ticked its installation will be included in the Silverado’s local left- to right-hand drive remanufacturing process and covered by GM’s five-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty but is not available for purchase separately.Launching the option, GM Australia and New Zealand Managing Director Jess Bala said, “The new Genuine 5th Wheel Hitch option expands what Silverado 2500 can already do, while preserving the premium refinement and heavy-duty performance they expect from the vehicle.”It’s worth noting an 8000kg towing capacity means Silverado’s fitted with the fifth wheel will be NB2-certified so specific licensing requirements apply, and GMSV advises prospective buyers to check in with their relevant state or territory roads authority for further details.Pricing

Mitsubishi has confirmed its new Pajero 4WD will spawn a whole line-up of new vehicles, but what they will be has been a mystery… until now.Japanese motoring magazine Best Car, which is known for its well-placed sources within the local car industry, has pointed to a new baby Pajero or ‘Pajero Junior’.The outlet speculates that based on the information it has received, the new baby Pajero could be based on a familiar model, which is forbidden from being sold in Australia.Best Car also speculates the new little rugged SUV could revive the Pajero iO or Pajero Junior names.Car-buying Australians from the turn of the century are likely to remember the Pajero iO, which was sold in three- and five-door layouts. It was properly compact, measuring about 4000mm long in the larger five-door body shape.There are only a handful of cars currently shorter than that on sale right now, including the Suzuki Swift, Kia Picanto and Mini Cooper three-door.Best Car suggests it will be based on something much bigger, the XForce SUV sold in South-East Asian markets and is similar to the old ASX SUV. The current Outlander and Delica platforms are deemed too large for a new Pajero iO.The XForce ticks a few boxes, it uses hybrid power and is already produced in right-hand drive. Unfortunately it is only front-wheel drive and it doesn’t meet Australian Design Rules (ADRs), which makes it a non-starter for our market.This means unless there is some serious engineering work done, it is unlikely any baby Pajero based on the XForce would be made available in Australia.To rub salt in the wounds, the XForce is sold across the ditch in New Zealand, where new cars don’t have to meet our extremely stringent ADRs.And the brand won't stop at one Pajero variant either it seems.The official transcript from the brand's future strategy presentation read: “In addition to the "Pajero" to be launched this year as a model that embodies the DNA of Mitsubishi Motors-ness, we will introduce additional new models going forward as part of the 'Pajero' series.”For now Australians will have to settle for the full-sized Pajero, which will arrive before the end of the year.It hasn’t been revealed in full yet, but CarsGuide has spotted the Pajero undergoing testing in Victoria around Christmas time last year.The new Pajero has blocky proportions similar to the incoming Nissan Patrol. It is based on the Triton ute, so it has a rugged ladder frame ideal for off-roading. You can expect it to tow 3500kg.Odds on it will use the same 2.4-litre bi-turbo four-cylinder diesel engine that powers the Triton and makes 150kW and 470Nm.It will be the brand’s flagship product, so expect a classy interior.

Chery has revealed its game-changing diesel plug-in hybrid ute will be called the Stockman when it lands in Australia in the fourth quarter of this year. The Chery Stockman, previously known as 'KP31', was confirmed today after the brand put a call out for names that prompted more than 20,000 submissions. The Stockman was one of nine names shortlisted among Bushwalker, Ironbark, Longreach, Mate, Orca and Outrider.Chery said the Stockman name reflects the capability, endurance and versatility of its first ute.The Stockman will join the Australian market as the first-ever PHEV diesel ute in what could shake-up the diesel-only dominant segment. It will also look to build on the work done by the BYD Shark 6 turbo-petrol PHEV, which has been one of the only few utes to experience sales growth in Australia over the past few months. The Stockman will be powered by a 2.5-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine and electric motor duo said to produce substantial amounts of power and torque.Chery has claimed the ute will have a 1000kg payload and 3500kg braked towing capacity, matching much of its diesel-only competition Down Under. The brand has high expectations for its new ute model with Australian Chief Operating Officer Lucas Harris telling CarsGuide earlier this year that it needs to be successful.“I believe that Chery has one chance to prove that we can build and deliver a highly-capable ute,” Harris said.“We are being a bit demanding. We want all of that diesel capability so that we can deliver what we say we want to deliver. But we also want the on-highway and the fuel efficiency benefits and the NVH (noise, vibration and harshness) benefits of having super hybrid at the same time.”Chery will reveal more details about the Stockman closer to its launch Down Under.

An affordable 4WD has been given some special edition flair in Australia. Suzuki has confirmed the Jimny Rhino will launch Down Under as a special version of the XL five-door small off-roader.It will start from $44,990 (before on-road costs), which makes it $4000 more than the current range-topping five-door variant. The news comes after the brand opened an expressions of interest portal for the car last month.The Jimny Rhino features “Kinetic Yellow” exterior paint work, which is usually a $1345 option for the three-door variants of the car.The exterior look features painted black and grey stripes along the sides with an image of a rhino on the front doors.The roof is painted in a shiny black colour, giving a two-tone effect. The Jimny Rhino rides on 15-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, with a different design to other Jimny models. Satin silver panels and air vent surrounds continue the new design elements inside the cabin. There are black leather-wrapped door handles with yellow stitching and a ‘Rhino' logo.Customisable interior footwell lighting has eight different colours, including Kinetic Yellow.The Jimny Rhino further receives an upgraded premium Pioneer sound system.The car also comes with a range of accessories, such as a large portable speaker and metal presentation box for the key. It will continue to be powered by a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, producing 75kW and 130Nm. The Jimny Rhino will be available with a manual and automatic transmissions like the rest of the Jimny range. The Jimny is Suzuki’s best-selling model in Australia, offering a cheap and compact off-roading alternative to the Toyota LandCruiser and Nissan Patrol.It lines up as a rival to the also budget-oriented GWM Tank 300, starting from $47,990 (drive-away). Suzuki’s Aussie special edition Jimny mirrors the brand's other global markets in introducing Rhino versions of its models. Order books for the Jimny Rhino are now open, with deliveries beginning on the 1st of July.

Ford has launched a teaser site for its upcoming electric ute, a smaller sibling to the F-150 Lightning.Due in 2027, the apparently mid-size ‘truck’ has been spied testing numerous times, and a QR code on some versions of the new model’s camouflage can be scanned, leading you to a site called ‘You Spotted a Unicorn’.The section of Ford’s US website shows behind-the-scenes footage of the new model’s development and planning, with links to be kept in the loop when more information comes to hand.US outlets have been spending time trying to discern what the new ute’s interior might look like based on the exterior footage, or how closely related the new model will be to the existing Ford Maverick ute.It will be built on the Universal Electric Vehicle platform, and Ford gave a possible hint to its name in the statement that said “the herd arrives next year” on the site alongside “we’re testing this prototype early”.Use of the word ‘herd’ could suggest an animal name. The first one that often comes to mind for ‘herd’ is ‘Buffalo’ but that’s also the name of a car in the Grand Theft Auto universe - conveniently one that mixes influence from the Ford Mustang and Dodge Charger.Rumours also abound that Ford will revive the Ranchero name, which had previously been used on a car-based ute. and generally applies to someone who works on a cattle ranch.What is expected of the new model is a more affordable entry point into Ford’s EV ute family, with the F-150 Lightning being much larger. The new ute is expected to be smaller than the Ford Ranger.The development of the new model is so different to previous undertakings by Ford that there’s even a new team dedicated to its planning.“We recruited the most technically skilled and creative professionals from inside and outside Ford to drive a radical change in how we develop an electric vehicle,” said Ford boss Jim Farley last year.“The work of this highly talented team has evolved into a critical enabler of our electric vehicle strategy. These electric vehicles will be lower cost, and not compromised in any way.”Ford is aiming for a starting price around US$30,000, or just over A$40,000 when directly converted.

The mini Toyota FJ LandCruiser has been toughened up by the Japanese maker’s aftermarket accessory brand.Modellista, which is part of Toyota, has turned its attention to the mini 4WD to beef up its image and capabilities.It has released a body kit and a range of accessories that make it look seriously mean.The kit includes a new front bumper guard and front and rear under body protection to guard against ruthless off-road tracks.New overfender details, fender garnishes and side mouldings give the FJ LandCruiser more street appeal. There is illumination for the front T-O-Y-O-T-A badging, a bonnet garnish, roof spoiler and Matt Olive 18-inch alloy wheels.Inside, you can kit out the FJ LandCruiser with LED lighting around the dashboard, in the footwells and throughout the cabin.Bad news is the FJ LandCruiser is still off the cards for Australia for now.Unfortunately, the FJ LandCruiser has been ruled out as it is fitted with a petrol engine that does not meet our emissions regulations, according to former Toyota Australia VP of Sales and Marketing Sean Hanley.“It’s just about regulations,” he said.“We’re moving to Euro 6 emissions standards. That’s the reality.”The door has been left ajar for the FJ to head our way in the future, though.Hybrid versions are to be built in India for domestic and export markets later this decade, according to reports.Petrol-electric power would put it back on the menu for Australia, and Indian production would likely keep the price below $50,000.

Chevrolet has released a substantially upgraded 2027 version of its Silverado 1500 full-size pick-up with the headline change being adoption of the latest, sixth-generation ‘LS6’ version of GM’s small block V8 in 5.7- and 6.6-litre form.GM hasn’t released specs for the 5.7L and 6.6L V8s but dealer and industry reports point to outputs of around 300kW/580Nm and 350kW/680Nm, respectively. Scheduled to hit US showrooms before the end of the year, the new Silverado will continue to offer four powertrain options in North America - the two petrol V8s as well as an “enhanced” version of the 2.7-litre ‘TurboMax’ four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine and the ‘Duramax’ 3.0-litre turbo-diesel inline six-cylinder.The Silverado 1500 is currently sold in Australia in two trim levels - LTZ Premium and ZR2, powered by the now out-moded 6.2-litre ‘EcoTec3’ naturally aspirated petrol V8.In the States the 2027 Silverado will boast seven trims - ZR2, Trail Boss, Custom Trail Boss, Work Truck, Custom, Silverado (formerly LT) and High Country.Introducing the Silverado LS6 engines, GM Executive Chief Engineer Mark Dickens said, “We pushed these engines through an extensive testing and validation process to make sure they deliver the durability, capability and dependability Silverado customers expect.”The LS6 engine debuted in the Corvette earlier this year in 6.7-litre (400kW/705Nm) form and the Silverado powerplants will be produced at GM’s Flint Engine Operations centre in Michigan as well as its Tonawanda Propulsion plant in New York State and the St. Catharines Propulsion facility just over the border in Ontario, Canada.As well as the new under-bonnet hardware the updated Silverado features a revised exterior with a new nose treatment incorporating LED headlights, tweaked LED tail-lights, chunkier wheel arch fenders and rocker panels as well as a standard dual exhaust (on Custom grade and above).Inside, the revised dash is highlighted by a new “edge-to-edge display” comprising a 16.3-inch central media display and a 12.2-inch digital instrument screen.A head-up display and 11.5-inch front passenger screen are standard on the ZR2 and High Country.The Z71 package will now be standard on 4WD models in the US, including skid plates, hill descent control and off-road suspension.When contacted for comment on potential local launch timing for the new Silverado a GM Australia & New Zealand spokesperson told CarsGuide, “Whilst we are excited by the news of the next generation Silverado, currently we have no announcements to make on future models for the ANZ region.”
