Mercedes-Benz is preparing to stave off the impending onslaught of China's large luxury SUVs by updating its range in Australia. The brand has shuffled around its GLE and GLS model lineup Down Under, introducing new engine choices and pricing. The GLS is the German giants’ flagship three-row SUV that directly competes with the BMW X7 in the ultra-luxury high-riding space. It will soon have some serious, and much cheaper, Chinese competition in Australia. The GLS is facing an impending battle against electrified rivals such as the XPeng GX and highly-anticipated Zeekr 8X and 9X duo, among others coming in the next months. These cars boast powerful fully-electric and plug-in hybrid set-ups that will give the petrol- or diesel-powered GLS a run for its money. The GLS range now kicks off with a new petrol-powered 450 grade that starts from $181,900, before on-road costs. This makes it $7000 cheaper than its diesel-powered sibling that used to occupy the entry level position in the lineup. The GLS 450 has a 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder petrol engine, producing 280kW and 560Nm, representing more power but less torque than the diesel unit. The AMG 63 S high-performance grade has experienced a price hike of more than $6000, now starting from $313,900.The range-topping Maybach 680 has seen its price boosted by $5000, with a starting price of $424,900. Both variants receive a 4.0-litre V8 twin-turbo petrol engine that pumps out 450kW and 850Nm.2027 Mercedes-Benz GLS pricing Australia (before on-road costs)The smaller GLE two-row SUV has also undergone a reshuffle in Australia as it continues to take on the BMW X5.The range kicks off with a new, more expensive 350d grade, replacing the 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with a more powerful 3.0-litre six-cylinder (210kW/650Nm) unit. It will cost nearly $6000 more than the outgoing 300d, starting from $142,300. Next up, the GLE 450 now costs $160,400, which is more than $3000 cheaper than it was before, but it will only be available with petrol power. The AMG 53 and V8-powered AMG 63 S have both increased in price by nearly $4000, with starting prices of $187,900 and $277,900, respectively. 2027 Mercedes-Benz GLE pricing Australia (before on-road costs)These cars show-off the luscious and supremely comfortable interiors you'd expect for their price points, including Mercedes-Benz new 'Superscreen' multimedia system, comprising of three connected 12.3-inch displays.Pre-orders have opened for the GLE and GLS models, with the AMG range and the Maybach GLS expected to arrive early next year.

The new Range Rover GT is the British SUV brand's most car-like creation ever.Sleeker, lower, longer and wider than the firm's Velar, the all-electric Range Rover GT is a shock for fans of the luxury brand's more typical SUVs, even when supposedly disguised in camouflage.Built to be a fifth member of the Range Rover family, the new GT doesn't replace any existing model, execs told CarsGuide at a recent media event held at JLR's powertrain plant near Wolverhampton in the UK.Instead, the swoopy SUV is primed to sit above the Evoque and Velar but below the Range Rover Sport and flagship full-size Range Rover.Officially, Land Rover's posh brand won't tell us anything about its new GT as its full reveal is penned in for later this year, so we don't know if it will be a rival for the inbound BMW iX4 or the larger unannounced BMW iX6, but an unscientific walkaround suggests dimensions not far off the Range Rover Sport. In the flesh, it's hard not to draw parallels between the striking four-door SUV-coupe and the smaller Polestar 4, although we'll need to see it when stripped of its disguise. What we do know is that the new GT has been created to be nothing less than the most technologically advanced Land Rover ever. The first of many to be based on JLR's all-new flexible Electric Modular Architecture (EMA), the GT launches with all-electric power, but the platform can support electrified combustion engines, with a plug-in hybrid or range-extender hybrid version already in the pipeline.Although it sits low to the ground, the new car-like Range Rover will deliver on the brand's trademark comfort and refinement with even the promise of real off-road capability – although we expect it will need height adjustable air springs to jack its body high away from harm.Like the latest Jaguar Type 01, the Range Rover GT should come with powerful 800-volt electrics and a large battery over 100kWh.Expect ultra-fast DC charging beyond 350kW and, if you factor in its slippery styling, a range of more than 700km could be possible.Land Rover remains tight-lipped about how many e-motors the GT will come with, but all-wheel drive and, at least dual motors should be standard, although later on a hot SV variant might rock up with a triple-motor setup that's lifted from the Jaguar Type 01.Spy photographers have already caught what now looks like a Shooting Brake wagon version of the GT, but some reports suggest the more practical body style could be a replacement for the ageing Velar.Inside the Range Rover GT designers have applied their famed reductive approach to create the car-maker's most impressive cabin yet.Accessed via large frameless doors, perhaps the bravest decision was not to follow the trend of plastering the dash with screens that stretch from pillar-to-pillar.Instead, one designer told us they used the very smallest screens they could get away with and then attempted to hide as much of the onboard tech as they could. The result, Range Rover claims, is a calmer lounge-like atmosphere that doesn't even offer a passenger touchscreen as an option, offering instead the full digital detox experience for your co-pilot.As standard, the GT comes with four seats, but a more practical five-seat version is also available for families.Unusually for a Range Rover leather is absent. Instead, wool-rich blend materials cover the seat backrests, while ultrafabric is stretched over the simple-form seats. The approach helps slash the carbon footprint of the cabin while saving weight, with the fabrics weighing half as much as animal hides. The real reason for the lack of leather is the look, one designer told me, natural hide doesn't stretch in quite the same way, so it wouldn't achieve the show car's clean, minimalist look. From the woven textiles used on the dash that sneakily hide the speakers, to the metallic vertical strips on the door cards, or copper coloured centre console, to the 1970s-inspired steering wheel, the Range Rover GT feels stylish and special and makes some of the German rivals’ cabins feel overwrought in comparison. It's also been designed to be easy to use. There's an advanced AI-powered natural speak voice assistant, while above that ultra-cool oval-shaped steering wheel is a clear thin instrument panel that sits freestanding on the dash and provides the speed, estimated range and battery charge. It's hard not to read into the concept's dash reading 288 miles (464km) at 80 per cent charge, with the suggestion that a full 100 per cent charge would equate to a total range of 580km.As well as being stylish, climb into the rear pews and there's also plenty of headroom in the for the tall, while legroom is claimed to be on par with the firm's largest Range Rover. All models will also come with a full-width panoramic roof that turns opaque at the touch of a button.Thoughtful touches for the second row include two large rear air vents and a touchscreen control panel between the seats.Confirming the Range Rover GT will land later this year, Land Rover's luxury arm will reveal full details then, including powertrain specification, pricing and positioning, as well as local timings.Commenting on the new GT, the Range Rover brand's boss, Martin Limpert, said: "The Range Rover GT will redefine the grand-touring segment with the ability to deliver beautiful and engaging GT poise, proportions and long-distance refinement while offering capabilities no conventional GT can match. "We have spent the last few years working obsessively on the fundamentals of the GT formula, reinterpreted in a sophisticated, uniquely Range Rover way. The result is the most car-like, yet unmistakably capable."Its blend of effortless EV performance, first-class long-haul refinement and all-terrain capability is pure Range Rover; while its calming interior previews our vision of a modern grand tourer."

A camouflaged prototype of what appears to be the Genesis GV90 has been spied in Melbourne, Victoria ahead of its imminent global reveal. The forthcoming electric SUV flagship for the South Korean luxury carmaker was spied alongside a Hyundai Ioniq 9.It appears the GV90 is considerably longer than the Ioniq 9 which already measures in at over five metres. It also features Genesis’ signature ‘Two Lines’ design language as seen by the tail-lights.A vehicle registration search shows that this is a Genesis evaluation vehicle with a tare weight of 3151kg. This is 377kg more than the Ioniq 9.The GV90 was first previewed by the Neolun concept back in 2024 and was originally expected to be revealed in 2025. This date was pushed back. It’s understood that this new electric SUV from Genesis will be based on the Hyundai Group’s forthcoming eM platform, which is an iteration of the E-GMP platform that dates back to 2021.The eM platform is promised to offer more range, as well as a higher level semi-autonomous driving capabilities. No other official details about the GV90 have been confirmed yet.The original Neolun concept had coach-style rear doors that are hinged in the opposite direction. There have been sightings of GV90 prototypes with these types of rear doors, however this particular example that was spied in Australia appears to have typical rear doors. It’s unclear whether there are still plans to offer the coach-style rear doors in the production-specification GV90.Given the GV90 has been spied in Australia, it’s likely that a local launch is on the cards.Once it launches it will form as a rival to the Mercedes-Benz GLS, Volvo EX90, as well as the forthcoming Range Rover Electric.

Alfa Romeo is at a crossroads with the famous Italian carmaker’s upcoming mid-size SUV critical to its on-going viability.Currently owned and managed by giant auto conglomerate Stellantis, Alfa’s global year-on-year sales dropped 21 per cent for the first half of 2026, with Australian registrations down 51 per cent (to just 139 units) on a less than stellar 2025 H1 result.Arresting that downward slide is addressed in the group-wide Stellantis Fastlane 2030 initiative, which positions Alfa Romeo as a ‘regional brand’ focused primarily on Europe with two significant new models coming down the product pipeline - a C-segment (medium) SUV to replace the current Tonale and a new ‘Bottega Fuoriserie’ project, likely a compact hatch to compete with the BMW 1 Series and Mercedes-Benz A-Class.The Alfa Romeo Bottega Fuoriserie is a bespoke, limited-production division created in partnership with Maserati to “revive classic Italian coachbuilding.” Speaking at the National Automotive Industry Roundtable organised by the Italian Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy (MIMIT), Stellantis Chief Operating Officer of Enlarged Europe Emanuele Cappellano has shown a teaser image of the new Alfa C-SUV showing a rear design detail.Cappellano confirmed the C-SUV is based on the group’s STLA Medium platform, will feature “multi-energy powertrains and will be introduced to compete in the heart of the market”.He added the new model has been designed at the Centro Stile Alfa Romeo in Turin, is set to be built at the Melfi plant in southern Italy and is scheduled to be officially unveiled in the fourth quarter of 2027.The new car is part of the Stellantis strategy for Enlarged Europe, the company targeting 15 per cent revenue growth and expanded portfolio coverage with a “C-segment offensive" underpinned by widescale use of the STLA One platform. There are 14 core brands under the Stellantis umbrella - Abarth, Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Citroën, Dodge, DS Automobiles, Fiat, Jeep, Lancia, Maserati, Opel, Peugeot, Ram and Vauxhall. The company has said Fastlane 2030 is aimed at sharpening management practices, investing in global platforms, powertrains and tech as well as optimising the company’s manufacturing footprint while raising product quality.Designed to focus on core strengths it positions Jeep, Ram, Peugeot and Fiat as global brands with Chrysler, Dodge, Alfa Romeo, Citroen, DS Automobiles, Opel and Vauxhall defined as regional brands.

Facing intense competition from emerging Chinese brands, the impact of US tariffs and increased manufacturing costs in Europe, the Volkswagen Group’s current financial trauma is well documented with a minimum cut of 50,000 jobs (likely 100,000) by 2030 and closure of four production plants in Germany already flagged. And now, as part of its Future Plan presentation, the Group’s executive board has said, “The (group) model lineup will be gradually concentrated on the most attractive market segments and streamlined by up to 50 percent; offering complexity will be reduced by up to 75 percent.”Which means key models currently sold by brands including Audi, Cupra, Skoda, Porsche and VW are set for early discontinuation, the latest by 2030, with the number of available options slashed by three quarters and annual production capacity dropping from 10 to nine million vehicles.Question is, which models are headed for the chop first and German publication Bild believes it has the inside scoop with a "concrete list” of 10 cars headed for extinction. Here’s the Bild VW Group product hit list.Audi: The Q5 Sportback and Q6 e-tron Sportback are unlikely to be replaced. And interestingly, even though the Porsche Taycan is marked for extinction (see below) its Audi e-tron GT twin under the skin isn’t.Cupra: The list marks the Cupra Raval (which hasn't even launched in Australia yet) as headed for the exit after a single generation.Porsche: In unsurprising news the underperforming Taycan is set to retire after the current model reaches the end of the road and the internal-combustion (ICE) Cayenne Coupe is gawn.Sadly for sports car devotees Bild’s mail is that even though Porsche’s ‘strategic realignment’ from late last year pointed to internal combustion power for flagship versions of the 718 Boxster and Cayman, that plan is kaput with the roadster and coupe again lining up as EV only.Skoda: The Bild report puts the Skoda Fabia small car on the chopping block, although there’s no mention of its closely-related Seat Ibiza and VW Polo siblings.Volkswagen: The Jetta compact sedan, now primarily sold in North America, and the Taos crossover-style SUV, currently offered in global markets including North America, South America and Russia (and marketed as the Tharu in China) look unlikely to make a next-gen iteration. No mention of Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini or Seat although Bentley has already shelved its plan to go pure-electric by 2035 and Lambo’s put production of its first EV firmly on the back burner.Bild estimates VW Group savings of up to €6.5 billion (~$10.7 billion) by 2031 by finishing up these 10 cars but even that’s far from a 50 per cent reduction in the across-the-board model count.Stay tuned for more VW Group model obituaries surely coming soon.

Korea’s new electric performance hero is here. Hyundai high-end sub-brand Genesis has released pricing for its GV60 Magma SUV ahead of its arrival in Aussie showrooms this month. It will start from $130,000, before on-road costs, making it almost $50,000 more than the standard GV60. Genesis is Hyundai’s answer to European giants Mercedes-Benz and BMW, and this is the brand's first attempt at a high-performance car.The GV60 is a small SUV and goes up against the BMW iX2, Volvo XC40 Recharge and Zeekr X, but none of them can go toe-to-toe with the GV60 Magma variant. Its performance pitches it closer to the larger Hyundai Ioniq 5 N ($91,700) and Kia EV6 GT ($99,660).It is smaller than the mechanically similar Ioniq 5 and 6 N performance cars, but packs the same punch. It has two electric motors that drive all four wheels and produce 448kW and 740Nm.It can shift from 0-100km/h in 3.4 seconds using the boost function that increases power to 478kW and 790NmThe car is equipped with a 84kWh battery, offering a total driving range of 425km, according to WLTP standards. Its interior features a 27.0-inch OLED screen for the instrument cluster and multimedia display, while there is also a head-up display. The GV60 Magma has a virtual gear shift system, which gives the Magma the feel of real gear changes in a petrol car. There is also a drifting mode that can direct power to the rear wheels using an electric limited-slip differential to enable dynamic, track-based driving. Hyundai confirmed production of the GV60 Magma in mid-2024, when it was revealed as a concept, with it finally now hitting Aussie shores. It will join the updated base GV60 that recently got a serious price cut in Australia, now starting from $88,300, down from more than $100,000. It will only be available with rear-wheel drive, meaning the Magma will be the GV60 with AWD available.

Mercedes-AMG has made the bold decision to remove the internal combustion engine from its CLA45 coupe-style compact performance car and replace it with a trio of electric motors derived from those found in the Mercedes-AMG GT 4-door Coupé.Boasting 500kW/1759Nm and 0-100km/h acceleration in a blistering 2.7 seconds, the new CLA45 4Matic+ is powered by two axial flux motors on the rear axle and one on the front with adaptive suspension and active aero standard across sedan and Shooting Brake (wagon) variants. The obvious elephant in the room is engine noise, or by definition, the lack of it, with prior iterations of AMG 45 models known and loved by owners for their rasping engine sound and throaty exhaust note.Mercedes-AMG believes it has that significant base covered with the AMGForce S+ setting.Positioning it as “combustion engine emotion at the touch of a finger”, the engineering boffins in Affalterbach say this driving mode “delivers an authentic, AMG typical combustion engine experience with the characteristic sound of a high-performance AMG four-cylinder engine.”“Coupled with a haptic, immersive experience, including interruption of traction during simulated gear changes, the result is a driving experience that makes performance intensely tangible,” the car’s launch statement said.Which sounds similar to Hyundai’s N e-Shift system that virtually simulates an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission in its Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 N models.Mercedes-AMG is at pains to point out “the sound of an original Mercedes-AMG A 45 S four-cylinder engine was meticulously documented using 13 microphones positioned in different locations recording more than 1600 detailed measurements, inside and outside.”The AMG Dynamic+ track-focused package is onboard as is AMG Track Pace which is claimed to “turn every visit to the racetrack into a professional training session.”In terms of day-to-day practicality an 800-volt architecture allows fast-charging of the 94kW lithium-ion battery at up to 330kW (22kW AC) and claimed range is over 670 or 640 kilometres (WLTP) depending on the model. Combined cycle (urban/extra-urban) energy consumption is between 18.7 and 16.5kWh/100km, again depending on model.Active aero includes a rear spoiler on the sedan and roof-edge unit on the wagon. In Eco, Comfort and Sport driving modes, the speed threshold for their activation is 145km/h, while in the AMGForce S+ and Race settings they raise immediately.Standard rims in Germany are 19-inch shod with 245/40 Z-rated rubber at the front and 265/40 at the rear. It’s likely Aussie versions will come with the optional 20s wearing fatter 255/35 and 275/35 tyres.Inside there are four seats only and the latest-gen MBUX multimedia operating system is included. Standard upholstery combines synthetic leather and synthetic microfibre with genuine leather and AMG Performance seats available.Mercedes-Benz Australia told CarsGuide the new CLA45 is set to arrive here in the first half of 2027 with the Sheeting Brake "under consideration" for local sale. For reference, the now superseded 310kW/500Nm internal-combustion CLA45 AMG 4Matic+ was priced at $126,500, before on-road costs.

Alfa Romeo’s stylish and refreshed hybrid SUV is here. The brand has announced pricing and specifications for its updated Tonale small SUV in Australia. It will be offered as a petrol mild hybrid, with prices starting from $64,990 9before on-road costs), which is the same as before. Plug-in hybrid power is now an extra $1500, with prices starting from $78,990.The Tonale is similarly priced to the BMW X1 that is available in petrol ($66,700) and PHEV ($79,500) set-ups. It will also tackle the revamped Cupra Formentor that just got a sizeable $7000 price cut in Australia ($53,990). PHEV variants of the Formentor are $4500 cheaper than the comparative Tonale, starting from $74,490. The petrol mild hybrid Tonale is powered by a 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine, producing 128kW and 240Nm, supplemented by a small electric motor and 48-volt battery. The PHEV also has a 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine, but adds a larger electric motor to boost power to 198kW and 270Nm, along with an all-wheel drive system. Its 15.5kWh battery has an all-electric driving range of 59km, according to WLTP standards. The car has received a new sharpened design as part of its refresh, including a re-thought front grille and new 19-inch alloy wheels. It also has several new interior features as standard.Seats are covered in a synthetic leather, and the front ones are electrically adjustable, with heating, ventilation and memory function. The steering wheel and windscreen washer nozzle are also heated. Elsewhere in the cabin, there is a 12.3-inch digital driver display and 10.25-inch central touchscreen, along with a wireless phone charger. It comes with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There other convenience features like an electrically operated tailgate with hands-free function, and keyless entry and start. Alfa Romeo has introduced special edition variants of its Tonale and Junior SUVs, called the Ibrida Sport Speciale. The Junior is priced from $51,990, while the Tonale starts from $68,990, so they are both more expensive than base versions of their respective models. The Junior is a compact SUV, powered by a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol mild-hybrid system, producing 107kW and 230Nm. It sits under the Tonale in Alfa Romeo’s range. The special edition flair to these models adds synthetic leather and Alcantara seats, as well as a sunroof and a glossy black body kit.

Lexus Australia has confirmed pricing and specification for the new eighth-generation ES sedan, with a choice of petrol-electric, and for the first time, pure-electric power. That EV power costs only $2000 more than the hybrid version, which is similar to Toyota's old jump up from petrol to hybrid power, and brings EV price parity closer than ever.Underpinned by an evolution of the global ‘GA-K multi-pathway platform’ the new ES breaks the design shackles with a sweeping fastback-style profile while retaining a conventional boot.Inside, a new 12.3-inch driver’s display joins a centrally mounted full-HD 14.0-inch multimedia touchscreen running a more powerful Arene operating system with a shift-by-wire Electro-Shiftmatic toggle shift lever controlling the transmission.Longer (+170mm), wider (+55mm) and taller (+110mm) than the car it replaces, with an expanded wheelbase (+80mm), the new ES offers a choice of two BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle) powertrains. The line-up launches with the ES 350e, powered by a single electric motor sending 165kW to the front wheels only, while the dual-motor ES 500e distributes a combined 252kW to all four wheels. The BEVs 74.7kWh lithium-ion battery can be charged at up to 150kW DC for a 10 to 80 per cent fill “in as little as 28 minutes” while 22kW AC charging capacity is also onboard.Scheduled to arrive later in the year, series-parallel hybrid models feature a newly developed sixth-generation powertrain combining a (105kW/227Nm) 2.5-litre inline four-cylinder engine with a new ‘eAxle’ incorporating a (150kW/270Nm) permanent magnet synchronous motor generator, inverter and Power Control Unit in the transaxle(s) for a combined output of 144kW.Claimed combined cycle (urban/extra-urban) fuel economy is 4.5L/100km for a theoretical range of around 1200km.Standard equipment on the entry-grade ES 300h includes 19-inch alloy wheels, LED lighting, synthetic leather upholstery, a panoramic roof, dual-zone climate control, heated front seats (with eight-way power adjustment), smart entry and start and 10-speaker audio.Step up to the ES 300h Luxury + EP and the list of included features adds ventilated front seats, multi-colour ambient interior lighting, a head-up display, wireless device charging, a 360-degree view and 17-speaker Mark Levinson audio. The battery-electric ES 350e Sports Luxury tips in 21-inch alloy wheels, high-definition adaptive high-beam headlights, easy-close doors, semi-aniline leather accented seat trim, 10-way driver’s seat adjustment, driver and front passenger radiant heating, dual wireless smartphone chargers, rear door sunshades and Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS).Then, the flagship ES 500e Sports Luxury adds the extra motor with all-wheel drive as well as Interactive Manual Drive and unique 21-inch alloy wheels.
