The 2026 Kia PV5 Cargo is the first time Kia’s built an electric van, and it’s coming with a futuristic design, low price, and competitive electric driving range to take on rivals like the VW ID.Buzz Cargo, the Renault Kangoo E-Tech or Peugeot E-Partner. New Kia is cheapest in its class

Kia Australia has confirmed the local specification for its first electric van, the PV5.The 2026 Kia PV5 Cargo, the commercial version of the electric van that will be followed by a passenger version down the track, starts from $55,990 before on-road costs for its single S variant.This makes it the cheapest electric van in the market, with the second- and third-cheapest being the Peugeot E-Partner at $59,990 and the Renault Kangoo E-Tech at $61,990.The PV5 uses a single front-mounted electric motor with 120kW and 250Nm, and Kia claims (under WLTP testing) a 416km driving range from the van’s 71.2kWh battery. Combined consumption is quoted at 19.1kWh, though CarsGuide’s initial testing during the PV5’s launch review suggests urban consumption sits in the mid-teens.Charging takes around 30 minutes at its maximum DC charging rate of 150kW, while its AC charging is maxed at 11kW.The PV5 is also bigger than its more expensive Euro rivals in terms of its cargo bay.In the cargo area, the PV5 has 4.42m3 of space, measuring 2255mm in length, 1565mm in width, and 1520mm in height.At 4695mm long, 1895mm wide and 1899mm high, it’s also externally smaller than the likes of the Toyota HiAce or Ford Transit Custom.In terms of specification, the PV5 comes in Clear White paired with a Deep Navy interior, though the S variant (the only available) is not short of useful features.Along with plenty of storage cubbies in the cabin, the van has a 12.9-inch multimedia touchscreen running Kia’s newest software, plus a 7.5-inch driver display, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a two-speaker sound system (much better than you’d expect), a wireless phone charger, multiple USB-C ports, a 12-volt plug, lumbar adjustment on both seats for long stints, auto air-conditioning, auto headlights, rain-sensing windscreen wipers, heated folding mirrors and V2L capability.An exterior charging plug adapter for the PV5’s V2L ability is included as standard.Kia also specifies servicing intervals of 24 months or 30,000km, whichever comes first, and servicing can be prepaid at up to eight years for $2246.

Ford's new $30,000 ute locked in

Ford has launched a teaser site for its upcoming electric ute, a smaller sibling to the F-150 Lightning.Due in 2027, the apparently mid-size ‘truck’ has been spied testing numerous times, and a QR code on some versions of the new model’s camouflage can be scanned, leading you to a site called ‘You Spotted a Unicorn’.The section of Ford’s US website shows behind-the-scenes footage of the new model’s development and planning, with links to be kept in the loop when more information comes to hand.US outlets have been spending time trying to discern what the new ute’s interior might look like based on the exterior footage, or how closely related the new model will be to the existing Ford Maverick ute.It will be built on the Universal Electric Vehicle platform, and Ford gave a possible hint to its name in the statement that said “the herd arrives next year” on the site alongside “we’re testing this prototype early”.Use of the word ‘herd’ could suggest an animal name. The first one that often comes to mind for ‘herd’ is ‘Buffalo’ but that’s also the name of a car in the Grand Theft Auto universe - conveniently one that mixes influence from the Ford Mustang and Dodge Charger.Rumours also abound that Ford will revive the Ranchero name, which had previously been used on a car-based ute. and generally applies to someone who works on a cattle ranch.What is expected of the new model is a more affordable entry point into Ford’s EV ute family, with the F-150 Lightning being much larger. The new ute is expected to be smaller than the Ford Ranger.The development of the new model is so different to previous undertakings by Ford that there’s even a new team dedicated to its planning.“We recruited the most technically skilled and creative professionals from inside and outside Ford to drive a radical change in how we develop an electric vehicle,” said Ford boss Jim Farley last year.“The work of this highly talented team has evolved into a critical enabler of our electric vehicle strategy. These electric vehicles will be lower cost, and not compromised in any way.”Ford is aiming for a starting price around US$30,000, or just over A$40,000 when directly converted.

Real world EV efficiency test results

Driving range is the biggest talking point with electric cars. Range anxiety remains a prevalent road block to potential EV buyers, despite ever-increasing claimed figures.Figures are measured using many different testing cycles, which all have varying degrees of perceived accuracy.  The Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP) is viewed as the most accurate standard available.Its testing figures often come in noticeably lower than the older New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) and the even more generous China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC). As much as these systems do their best to mirror real-world driving, they can never be truly accurate because of the different ways people use their cars.The Australian Automobile Association’s Real-World Testing Program has done the ground work to see just how accurate these figures are when they are put to the test on the roads. The testing was completed in Victoria, with each vehicle travelling a route of 93km.We’ve compiled the most- and least-accurate EV driving ranges, according to what is reported and what they actually did on the road.The figures used for this data are the quoted Australian Design Rules figures used for sales approval.Brands base these figures on the various testing standards, and this means the difference in accuracy between reported and actual figures may not be as dramatic as portrayed by the raw numbers. This is particularly apparent for Chinese brands that register a more lenient testing method (NEDC) than other brands, which represents an exaggerated difference compared to real-world figures than what WLTP would show. Topping the list for the most inaccurate figure is the 2023 MG4 all-wheel drive hatchback. The quoted figure for this car is 405km, but it was more than 100km off that calculated in the real world. It only managed 281km, which was a 31 per cent difference. The MG4 has a WLTP range of 350km, making it a less egregious roughly 19 per cent inaccuracy. The theme of Chinese brands continues down the list, with three of the other four cars in the top five all being made by BYD. The BYD Seal sedan has a claimed driving range of 650km, but in the real world it only reached 488km, resulting in a 25 per cent decrease, but that dropped to 14 per cent based on WLTP figures. BYD’s Dolphin hatchback had a 24 per cent drop-off on its ADR figure of 410km, only capable of travelling 313km, but that was only an eight per cent decrease based on WLTP. The Kia EV6 mid-size SUV registered an eight per cent shortfall on its WLTP figure, travelling 484km instead of 528km. Kia's EV5, EV6 and EV9 SUVs also represent 11 per cent shortfalls on their WLTP range figures. The BYD Atto 3 small SUV was also in the top five and had a 20 per cent shortfall on its ADR figure of 410km, only reaching 328km. That was only a 5 per cent decrease based on its WLTP figure. Finally, the Tesla Model 3 had a 14 per cent drop off on what was expected based on WLTP numbers. The Kia EV5 is joined by the Tesla Model Y, with ADR and WLTP figures only representing a three per cent difference at the other end of the scale.The BYD Sealion 7 is one of the more dramatic examples of the inaccuracy of the NEDC system. Its 17 per cent shortfall based on NEDC standards is reduced to just three per cent when based on WLTP. While this data demonstrates how EVs perform in real life, it also provides important insight into how differing testing standards can dramatically alter driving range expectations. WLTP figures remain the most accurate mainstream testing regime, with NEDC and CLTC testing exaggerating potential driving range.

Zeekr's jaw-dropping new car on the way

Zeekr’s flagship family hauler is lurking on Australia’s door-step.The big and luxurious Zeekr 009 Grand people mover has been shown in right-hand drive in Hong Kong.The 009 Grand ditches the third row for a business class on wheels-like four-seat layout.Made to appeal to back-seat passengers, the 009 Grand has reclining seats wrapped in supple leather and synthetic suede. They will pamper the passengers with massage, heating and ventilation functions.A monster 43-inch LED display separates the front and rear rows, transforming the area to a boardroom on the move.There are lockable consoles in the rear, which open via a pin code, cubbyholes to put your shoes and a refrigerator. Zeekr Australia’s Managing Director Frank Li has previously confirmed to CarsGuide the 009 Grand would come Down Under later this year.“In the second half of the year, we will be welcoming a very luxurious model, the 009 four-seater.“In China this is called the 009 Grand and it will have even better features than the current car,” Li said.The 009 Grand hasn’t been updated in China like the rest of the range, which means it misses out on the brand’s new 900-volt architecture and subsequent circa-400kW DC charging speed.Instead it maintains the 800-volt set-up of the current version, which delivers a DC charging rate of about 200kW.At its heart the 009 Grand has a 108kW Nickel-Manganese-Cobalt (NMC) battery that delivers a driving range of more than 700km via China’s more lenient test cycle. Six- and seven-seat versions with the same hardware deliver a driving range of about 560km in Australia.The 009 Grand uses a dual motor set-up, with the two powerplants combining for 580kW and 810Nm.Big, luxurious people-movers are all the rage in China and several makers are going to get in on the act here.BYD’s Denza is offerings its D9 people mover and GAC has its more affordable M8 plug-in hybrid people mover on sale now, too.

The ultra affordable Chinese EV antidote

A new affordable and super compact electric car has been named ahead of its official reveal, and this one is from Europe rather than China.Dacia has announced its upcoming fully electric compact car will inherit the ‘Spring’ name from its predecessor, which at some stages was the most affordable brand new electric car sold in Europe.Dubbed the ‘New Spring’, as it will be sold for a period of time alongside the outgoing car, the 2027 car will be a ground-up development based on the upcoming Renault Twingo.Expected to wear Dacia’s current angular styling language as opposed to the revived ‘90s aesthetic of the new Twingo from Renault, the Spring is said to keep the spirit of its predecessor.“New Spring keeps the essentials: a 100 per cent electric powertrain, four real seats, and a proper boot Dacia continues to pursue a clear ambition to pave the way for electric mobility that is accessible to all,” said the brand.The current low-cost car is built in China, but the new car will be built in Slovenia alongside the Twingo as parent company Renault looks to avoid tough new tariff structures imposed on Chinese-built vehicles in the EU.Renault has said it is targeting the equivalent of a sub-$30,000 price for the Twingo, but the Dacia model is expected to cost even less.The outgoing Spring was a success in Europe, selling over 200,000 units according to the brand. As recently as 2024 it was made available in right-hand drive to cater to the UK market.It is powered by either a 52kW/137Nm or 72kW/137Nm motor driving the front wheels, mated to a 24.3kWh battery allowing a 225km range according to the WLTP combined cycle.At just 3701mm long, it is even smaller than the most compact electric car sold in Australia, the BYD Atto 1, which measures 3990mm long. Its boot measures 308 litres, which Dacia says is class-leading.The Atto 1 starts from just $23,990 (before on-roads) in Australia, which makes it the most affordable new electric car on sale in Australia. It is also strictly a four-seat offering, and the entry-level version can travel 220km on a full charge, using a 65kW electric motor.The Duster is the only Dacia model on sale in Australia, and it is re-badged and sold as a Renault. The brand’s Australian operation, has said in the past the door is open to more re-badged Dacia models in the future.Ultra compact cars struggle to be sold in Australia as they often fall afoul of either our tough Australian Design Rules or the requirements for a five-star ANCAP safety rating.Mitsubishi trialled its eK X electric city car in Australia several years ago, but ultimately decided it wouldn’t be viable with the built-in-Japan model attracting higher prices than Chinese rivals, and it would have worn a safety rating of three stars or less.

New mini Defender goes hybrid instead of EV

A smaller version of an iconic 4WD is no longer set to be EV-only, as new plans reveal hybrid drivetrain options have become a larger part of JLR’s future.The Land Rover Defender is going to spawn a smaller version of the nameplate, possibly called the Defender Sport if reports including those from Autocar in the UK are accurate.All signs pointed to an EV powertrain for the smaller Defender, based on Jaguar Land Rover’s (JLR) plans to roll out its new Electrified Modular Architecture (EMA) as an EV-exclusive platform, but now the company has shifted strategy to include hybrids.Likely good news to many traditionalists in the JLR customer base, the brand confirmed the new Defender model would indeed go hybrid rather than EV-only.“A new model from the Defender family has been confirmed as the second vehicle to be launched on the EMA platform, which will now include the option of HEV as well as BEV in the future,” JLR said in a statement.According to JLR’s Managing Director for Defender and Discovery, Mark Cameron, plans are already looking well into the future for ‘Defender’, which now stands as a sub-brand rather than a single model under JLR’s ‘House of Brands’ strategy alongside Range Rover, Jaguar and Discovery."We've got a portfolio of one model with several variants,” he told Autocar on his plans for Defender, “but I'm working seven to 10 years ahead to build out this whole brand portfolio."We've got to make sure everything we do as Defender has the DNA of the brand: epic built-to-last, go-anywhere capability."While development is well on its way, details short of the inclusion of hybrid drivetrains in the so-called Defender Sport are scarce.Cameron has said while the new model likely won’t have the same capabilities as a Defender due to the platform’s electrification limitations, the model will still be “class-leading in the attributes that make it a Defender”.Importantly, JLR also has a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Stellantis to work on hybrid technology, which could even result in the new model from Defender sharing some DNA with its historic rival.The new Defender model will be the second to launch on the new EMA platform after the Range Rover brand is to launch a new “full hybrid-electric vehicle.”“The HEV will be a unique new addition to JLR’s propulsion portfolio, offering more choice alongside mild hybrid electric vehicle (MHEV), plug‑in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) and full battery electric vehicle (BEV) options.“JLR will reveal more on its first electric model built on its EMA platform at Halewood, Merseyside, later this year.”

Important EV tech finally nears Oz approval

It might feel like V2G (Vehicle-to-Grid) functionality for electric vehicles has been ‘coming soon’ to Australia since the dawn of time but the technology looks like it’s finally close to local introduction with Hyundai using its Ioniq 9 pure-electric SUV for a groundbreaking standards-compliant demonstration.V2G is a bi-directional charging system that allows an EV to supply stored energy to a home during blackout emergencies or monetise its export to the electrical grid during peak periods.The company said it has completed Australia’s first V2G discharge, doing so in compliance with the relevant ISO (International Organization for Standardisation) 15118-20 protocol, using a StarCharge Halo 7.4kW bi-directional DC charger.This comes as the federally-funded Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) is pushing EV (electric vehicle) infrastructure development, including large-scale V2G trials. Hyundai said, “This Milestone supports HMCA's commitment to manufacturer-approved, standards-compliant V2G deployment” adding the StarCharge Halo received Clean Energy Council (CEC) listing in March 2026 and is AS/NZS 4777.2 compliant.Like other EV models already on sale in Australia, the Hyundai Ioniq 9’s 800-volt electric architecture allows fast, high-power DC charging and bi-directional energy flows. Australia adopted national V2G and V2H (Vehicle-to-Home) standards in 2024 and ARENA forecasts up to 2.6 million Australian homes could adopt V2G by 2040.But testing, alignment and approval of regulations and hardware (including vehicles) as well as establishing grid standards and gaining network approvals has proved to be a lengthy process. Hyundai said it is “helping establish a standards-based pathway for scalable, manufacturer-supported V2G and V2X (Vehicle-to-Everything) deployment across homes, buildings, energy networks and virtual power plants.”Hyundai Motor Company Australia CEO Don Romano added, “This (V2G discharge) is the result of sustained technical work by Hyundai's R&D teams in Korea and Australia. “Getting this right is essential because V2G will only scale in Australia if consumers, energy providers and governments can trust the technology."Electric cars can do far more than just drive. They can power homes and support the grid. “This first V2G discharge using ISO 15118-20 with the IONIQ 9 demonstrates that we are delivering real innovation, not just talking about it," he said.Hyundai models under evaluation or development for V2G in Australia include the Ioniq 9, Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 as well as future Ioniq platforms. Mitsubishi has also been working on V2G capability for some time for its Outlander plug-in hybrid, which has taken part in earlier trials for the technology in South Australia.

Huge update for key Geely EX5 rival

The Leapmotor C10 Long-Range electric family SUV has just been given a serious overhaul in Australia as it looks to hunt down the Geely EX5 in Australia. The 'Design' grade will continue to be priced from $49,888 (before on-road costs), sitting at the top of the standard C10 range. The C10 has undergone some big changes in Australia, including the addition of the special edition performance variant targeting Tesla Model Y.It comes after the C10 was updated in China to receive a redesigned exterior and cabin, including elements like a panoramic head-up display and 17.3-inch central touchscreen.These updates are not included as part of the model year improvements for the Design grade in Australia.A spokesperson for Leapmotor Australia confirmed this more significant update was only for the Chinese market, for the time being.The main change for the updated Australian C10 is the addition of a bigger 82kWh battery, boosting driving range to 510km, according to WLTP standards. This is a step up on the rest of the standard C10 range, with its 70kWh battery offering 425km. This is the same battery as what is found in the special edition AWD variant of the C10, starting from $53,888. It is also now able to charge at 180kW via DC fast charging, with a 30 to 80 per cent juice-up taking roughly 22 minutes, courtesy of an 800-volt platform. Its electric motor set-up has also received a tweak, with power increased to 220kW from 160kW, while torque is now at 360Nm from 320Nm. The sprint from 0 to 100km/h now only takes 6.2 seconds. The car now also rides on Yokohama sport tires to improve handling and grip, with two entry key cards coming as standard instead of one as was previously the case. Interior options now include a ‘Camel’ brown interior as well as a black colour.The C10’s main competitos is Geely’s EX5 (starting from $41,990), which has experienced a strong sales run in 2026 and was the third best-selling EV for May in Australia. The EX5 is cheaper than this updated C10, but the latter has a better driving range than Geely’s example as well as better performance. The C10 will also tackle the BYD Sealion 7 (starting from $54,990) and rivals from more traditional brands like the Kia EV5 (starting from $56,770). It continues to be available in range-extender hybrid and fully-electric set-ups.

Unlikely military spin-off for Euro SUV

Renault has unveiled a surprise new model, a military tactical vehicle developed in collaboration with French defence firm Thales.Underneath, the ‘4 Troop’ is actually a 2026 Renault Rafale plug-in hybrid SUV that uses its vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability to power a drone operation system.The unlikely military tool is fitted with equipment for data processing and operation of both unmanned aerial and ground vehicles, though imagery would suggest the drones are primarily the kind you’d see photographers and videographers use.“It provides land forces with a fully functional mobile command centre that can be configured to match the exact requirements of land forces missions and provide effective mission capabilities thanks to Thales's Combat Digital Platform,” Renault says.The announcement for the 4 Troop reads more like a sales pitch at potential investors or buyers and operators than a detailed specification run-down, though that is often the case with any automotive partnership with a defence or security firm.Renault spruiks the all-wheel drive system and hybrid drivetrain as a combination suited for differing terrains and efficient operation, with the option for a combustion engine if needed.The auto giant (which is part-owned by the French government) also published images of soldiers with a Master van using what appears to be similar drone operation hardware.The reveal comes alongside an announcement from Renault and Thales that the automaker will begin building as many as 1000 combat drones (not the kind you’d see photographers and videographers use).The rather more confronting announcement from Renault on this deal uses phrases like “mission-configurable warhead” and “requirements of the wartime economy”.While it’s not unusual for auto brands to assist in building military equipment (Mitsubishi famously built planes in WWII, and Ferdinand Porsche designed tanks, for example), the joint statements from Renault and Thales are certainly at odds with the French carmaker’s usual recent announcements about reviving classic models as EVs and developing new in-car tech.
