The Cayenne SUV's arrival close to two decades ago is credited with rescuing Porsche from likely financial ruin. But it's taken a while for the family-focused five-seater to feel comfortable in its own skin... to become a 'real' Porsche. Does the sporty, twin-turbo V8 GTS reflect that evolution?

The Skoda Octavia RS has been a vital player in the brand's range in Australia for years now, and this new version is smarter, sharper and even cleverer than the last one. With a liftback sedan or wagon to choose from, and still with a punchy petrol turbo engine, is this the best alternative to a Subaru WRX on the market right now?

Ah, wagons. Remember them? The Audi A4 Avant is a particularly handsome example of one, too, and it will cost you $71,400 for the 45 TFSI quattro S line.Let’s start with the engine then - the 2.0-litre turbo will deliver 183kW and 370Nm, and a sprint to 100km/h in 6.0 seconds. It’s not lightning-fast, maybe, but the power feels plentiful for the nature of this A4.That engine pairs with a seven-speed S tronic auto, and thanks to quattro, you get AWD. Also new is a 12-volt mild hybrid system that can lower fuel use by up 0.3L/100km - now a claimed 7.1L/100km on the combined cycle. The Avant, or wagon, increases the A4’s dimensions to 4762mm x 1847mm x 1435mm, but also increases the cargo capacity to a considerable 495 litres with the rear seats in place, or 1495 litres with them folded flat. You can expect AEB with pedestrian detect, an exit warning system, lane change warning, rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors and a reversing camera - all of which contribute to the A4's five-star ANCAP safety rating. The high-tech stuff joins eight airbags (dual front, front side, side bags front and rear and curtains front and rear). You’ll also find LED headlights, 19-inch alloy wheels, a new 10.1-inch touchscreen that's Apple CarPlay and Android Auto equipped, a smart key with push-button start, leather trim, three-zone climate, standard navigation, DAB+ digital radio, Audi’s Virtual Cockpit (a 12.3-inch digital display that replaces the traditional driver's binnacle), as well as sportier exterior and interior styling, frameless mirrors and illuminated door sills, and a better Audi 10-speaker stereo.

The allroad is the only vaguely off-road-focused variant of the A4, matching the wagon dimensions of the Avant a little extra ground clearance, some more rugged exterior styling and an off-road mode that uses the car’s traction and braking systems to deliver more off-road grip. It’s also the only diesel in the family, making use of a 2.0-litre unit producing 140kW and 400Nm, and will cost you $69,900.That engine pairs with a seven-speed S tronic auto, and thanks to quattro, you get AWD. The all road increases the A4’s dimensions to 4762mm x 1847mm x 1435mm, but also increases the cargo capacity to a considerable 495 litres with the rear seats in place, or 1495 litres with them folded flat.
