In the land of the free, nothing says freedom like a V8-powered truck and if a ute doesn’t have eight cylinders you can simply do an engine swap.

The guys at Hoonigan who are no strangers to V8 utes, invited Josh Mazerolle from Vague Industries to check out his V8 1977 Toyota HiLux

Under the bonnet, there's a 5.3-litre turbo LS with a bottle of NOS in the back just to add that extra bit of spice.

On the outside, the car is far from a looker, with plenty of patina, a spot-welded ‘widebody’ kit and C-clamps holding the front bumper on.

It looks like it belongs in an episode of Roadkill and it’s set to appear in their 3K Hooptie Challenge soon.

Is this HiLux a better V8 ute than Hoonigan's Holden? Let us know in the comments.

Exposure to that car changed his world forever, leading to an RX-7 obsession. To feed his automotive addiction, Mitchell decided to become a motoring journalist and made his mark at several high-profile motoring publications before landing at CarsGuide. While he is a rotary loyalist, Mitchell also has a massive love for Aussie muscle cars, and dreams of one day getting behind the wheel of a Charger R/T E49 (if anyone will let him). His other passions include Queensland, and spending Saturdays with the boys.
