Did you get a shock a couple of weeks ago when the price of petrol jumped almost 30 cents litre at the pump? Fear not, help is here.There’s little you can do about the rising cost of oil – but there is a choice of fuel-efficient cars with most mod-cons for less than $14,000 drive-away, no more to pay. Previously, it hasn’t always made economic sense to trade-in your old banger and buy a new car purely to save money on petrol. More often than not, the fuel savings are evaporated by the high cost of a new model.But that’s changing. The strong Australian dollar – and the most competitive new-car market in the free world – means you now get much more for your money. Standard fare typically includes six airbags, air-conditioning and, in most cases, wireless Bluetooth phone connectivity. That’s in addition to the miserly consumption and peace of mind new cars provide.As ever, the headline prices are for cars with manual transmission. Figure on another $2000 for auto (where available). One other word of caution: always ask how much metallic paint costs. Holden charges as much as $550 extra (Hyundai and Nissan $495 and Suzuki $475) which takes some of the shine off the bargain price.With all that in mind, we’ve assembled the four cheapest – and most worthy – fuel misers money can buy.Holden Barina SparkSales of the smallest new Holden money can buy have fallen off a cliff this year because of newer competition and the lack of an automatic transmission. But the baby Barina Spark will be worth another look in January when it finally becomes available with an automatic transmission – two years after it went on sale.The Barina Spark is among the smallest of this bunch but it comes with five doors and five seating positions, although there is really only room for two in comfort in the back. The interior has a futuristic design. It’s a user-friendly layout, with plenty of storage cubbies, although the plastics are hard to the touch.The 1.2-litre four-cylinder engine is willing but, as with most cars in this class, you need to keep the revs up to maintain momentum up hills. Or keep with the traffic. Road holding is sound but not best-in-class. Happily, there’s a full-size spare in the boot.The sound system is below average and Bluetooth is not standard (it’s a $410 accessory). In North America the Barina Spark is available with internet radio; Holden is rolling this feature across the range starting with the regular Barina in the new year.As with many brands, Holden offers fixed price servicing. But check the fine print: Holden requires you to service the car every nine months, not 12, which makes it dearer to maintain over the three-year warranty period. And another thing: Holden has the dearest metallic paint option in this group. At $550 extra, be sure to haggle.VERDICTSharply priced but lacks some features standard on rivals. Wait until January for the updated model.Holden Barina SparkFrom: $13,990 drive-awayEngine: 1.2-litre four-cylinderEconomy: 5.5L/100kmTransmission: 5-speed manual, 4-speed auto from JanuaryHyundai i20In the past few months the Hyundai i20 has had a facelift and a price cut, and it’s now back to being a bargain buy. When the i20 was released two years ago, Hyundai initially set the price at $16,990 – and buyers stayed away in droves.The Hyundai i20 has the longest warranty of this lot – five years and unlimited kilometres – but at this price only comes with three doors. Standard fare includes six airbags, Bluetooth connectivity (including music streaming) a new six-speed manual or optional four-speed automatic transmissions.The i20 is among the roomiest of this quartet, with the biggest boot (Hyundai i20: 295L, Nissan Micra: 227L, Barina Spark: 170L, Suzuki Alto 110L). As with the others, it comes with a full size spare. The Hyundai i20 is also the only car in this price range to score a five-star crash safety rating (the Volkswagen Up is five-star but it is $13,990 plus on-road costs, giving it a drive-away price closer to $17,000).The Hyundai’s interior is neither striking nor dull, it’s been designed to make life easy with 12V and USB power sockets, decent sized door pockets and a roomy glovebox. Given that the i20 has the biggest engine of this bunch, it’s no surprise it has more go and copes with the daily grind with less stress than the others.Road holding is near the top of these four cars but not class-leading. We’re not a fan of the Kumho Solus tyres in the wet. In the dry they’re fine. Hyundai’s fixed-price servicing deal is among the cheapest available – but the offer runs out after three years. Disappointingly, service costs return to free-market prices in the last two years of Hyundai’s warranty coverage.Given that it has just introduced this program, here’s hoping Hyundai extends the servicing deal to five years before the first customers hit this hump in their ownership experience. And another thing: Hyundai makes a point of the fact that the i20 was designed in Germany – but it’s built in India.VERDICTThe roomiest, zippiest and safest among this quartet (also has the longest warranty). But you only get three doors at this price.Hyundai i20From: $13,990 drive-awayEngine: 1.4-litre four-cylinderEconomy: 5.3L/100km manual, 5.9L/100km autoTransmission: 6-speed manual or 4-speed autoNissan Micra STWith its bubble-shaped cutesy looks, you could be forgiven for thinking the Nissan Micra is a bit of a toy car. But it’s surprisingly capable and, in the three-cylinder guise we’ve chosen, more fuel-efficient in the real world than the rating label suggests.The Micra very nearly won a host of Car of the Year awards when it was released two years ago, winning praise for its road holding and fun-to-drive dynamics. It tops the class in this price range (and has the tightest turning circle this side of a Smart car).Picking the right time to buy is key to the Micra's appeal. It has been priced as low as $12,990 drive-away for a manual model (an absolute steal), but the current cash offer is $13,990 drive-away – or 0 per cent finance for 60 months. However, if you take the finance offer you must pay full retail, which is closer to $15,990 drive-away.Our advice? Pay cash or arrange your own finance and shoot for a $12,990 drive-away price and see if you can get a Nissan dealer to take the bait. As with the Hyundai i20, the Nissan Micra has an inoffensive but functional interior, with plenty of hidden cubbies, big door pockets and glovebox and (for an economy car) surprisingly good seats.Although there are seats for five, it’s better off carrying a maximum of four. An unusual omission, the centre back-seat position lacks a head rest. The sound system may look bland but the audio quality is above average, and the Bluetooth set-up works a treat – but it doesn’t yet include music streaming and there’s no USB power source, just a 12V socket.Nissan offers fixed price servicing for the Micra (and the rest of its range) but it’s the dearest in the business. Nissan requires a visit to the dealer every six months – and the cost of each visit is higher than the competition. And another thing: Depending on overseas demand, Nissan sources the Micra from factories in Thailand and Indonesia.VERDICTOur pick based on its current discount price, the Nissan Micra is the best to drive in this group and (contrary to the label) among the most frugal.Nissan Micra STFrom: $13,990 drive-awayEngine: 1.2-litre three-cylinderEconomy: 5.9L/100km manual, 6.5L/100km autoTransmission: 5-speed manual, 4-speed autoSuzuki Alto GLIf you really want to drive your dollar further, the Suzuki Alto is the champion. Priced at $11,990 drive-away, it’s making life hard for the other mainstream brands – and even the cut-throat Chinese car makers struggle to undercut it.The Suzuki Alto is three years old now but is standing up well to the test of time. Its 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine is not the most refined in its class, but it operates with sewing machine-like reliability. It’s also the most frugal car in this group – in part because it demands premium unleaded petrol (95 octane), which is dearer to buy but goes further than regular petrol.The Suzuki Alto doesn’t come standard with Bluetooth but the current $11,990 offer for the “Indie” pack includes a portable navigation unit which comes with Bluetooth. The Alto has a hard-wearing functional interior that probably won’t win any beauty contests, but it’ll likely outlast owners. At least Suzuki is honest about how many people can fit comfortably; it only has seatbelts for four occupants.The boot is small (at least there is a ful size spare underneath) but as with all the hatchbacks here, the back seats fold so you can fit more gear. And another thing: Suzuki is the third-biggest car maker in Japan and outsells Mitsubishi, Subaru, Honda and Mazda in Europe. The Alto comes from India, where Suzuki is the market leader.VERDICTAt this price, nothing gets close. Nissan Micra 2011 review

A UK Top Gear host famously reviewed the Nissan Micra while wearing a paper bag over his head. The car in question was an eye-gouging pink, which alone was enough reason to go incognito. And it was also a few years ago, when a Micra in any colour was a bad idea.But there’s no shame in being seen in the current Micra. It’s true the little car has its faults. However, you have to weigh them up against its good points: economy, space and -- in the base model -- price.We tested the $12,990 manual base model and then skipped over the $14,990 mid-range ST-L to the $16,990 Ti ($18,990 as tested with the $2000 auto option).That’s not cheap, compared to the rivals – mainly the $11,990 Chery J1 and Suzuki Alto, and even the Barina Spark comes in at $500 less.It had a strong competitor in the Hyundai Getz, but the little Korean is leaving the battlefield. However the Micra could face an even stronger on in the new Kia Rio, which arrives in September armed with fresh new looks and attitude.But the Micra currently argues well on equipment, with the base model getting a respectable amount of safety kit, height-adjustable driver’s seat, Bluetooth, remote central locking and MP3/CD audio system with controls on the steering wheel.The instrument panel curiously offers ‘personalised anniversary, birthday and New Year reminders’ which raises the question of whether people too vague to register the end of a year should be behind a wheel at all. But it does explain why all sorts of warning chimes, bleeps and blips are standard.Upper spec ditches the steel wheels for alloys – and a full-sized spare – and adds power-folding mirrors, climate-control for the airconditioning, reverse parking sensors and a driver’s armrest that was so annoying we punched it in frustration.However the top-spec’s price has to be shopped against contenders like the $16,690 Volkswagen Polo, $16,990 Ford Fiesta and $16,990 Mazda2, all three of which leave it eating dust in terms of both value and verve.The Micra’s looks have calmed down over the years, but it’s still a tallish pod with front and rear lines that slope steeply away. But it no longer has the little ‘buds’ on the headlights for you to tell where the front corners are, and you really have to crane over the dash to see where the bonnet disappears – before you bury it into something.Dash design is good, with the oversized – and probably iPod-inspired airconditioning controls adding a bit of funkiness.Storage spaces are at a premium, with a tiny glove box and miserly door pockets, while the little nooks in the centre console don’t take much, and the storage space in the front passenger seat only works if you’re flying solo. Luckily, the cargo area is generous, and with the rear seats down almost cavernous for a car this size.However the main let-down is the poor impression left by touchpoints like the steering wheel and seats – all of which are hard and feel cheap. The driver’s seat gets a flip-down armrest that was so annoyingly positioned we punched it in frustration.The base model ST gets a 56kW/100Nm 1.2-litre three-cylinder, which claims 5.9L/100km with the standard five-speed manual and 6.5L/100km with the optional four-speed automatic.The ST-L and Ti get a 75kW/136Nm 1.5-litre four-cylinder with fuel figures posted at 6.5L for the manual and 6.6L for the auto.Suspension is McPherson strut and stabiliser bar at the front and torsion beam with springs at the rear. And some corners have been cut with the brakes, which are front discs but rear drums at all spec levels.It does well at this price level with six airbags, dynamic control and anti-skid brakes with brake assist for panic stops and brakeforce distribution to send more anchor to the corners that need it.The Micra hasn’t been crash-tested in Australia, but in Europe get four stars.The first thing you notice is how much headroom the Micra offers, even in the rear pew. However passengers back there don’t get much legroom unless the front seats are set forward.We suspected we’d prefer the Ti’s 1.5-litre engine – so no shock there. But we were surprised to find the base model’s 1.2-litre wasn’t an outright woofer.Granted, it was better on the flat and struggled on hills, especially with more than two people, but if you were unhurried about the slopes it got there eventually.Its downside was that when you needed to rev it – which was often – the lack of sound damping meant you got an earful of noise. And not the good kind.The larger engine was our clear favourite, even with the four-speed auto. Again, steep slopes gave it a bit of pause – you had to throw it back into second gear on some hills -- but these were the kind that joggers set as a training challenge.Otherwise it punted the Micra’s light weight around with ease. Coupled with a manual transmission to stoke it along, this engine could offer up even more enthusiasm.The steering is light but with acceptable feel for a city bug, and with a satisfying return to centre. The wheels at far corners help with dynamics, letting you flick the little body around easily – and parking is naturally a cinch.But both our test cars fared poorly in the noise assessment. The manual had some unpleasant sounds coming from around the rear underfloor (possibly wheel bearings) while the rear roof spoiler on the Ti added a chorus to the wind noise from the front on both.The Micra range is pitched at the budget-conscious city dweller, and – graded on the curve – it’s a good little jigger for the job.But if Nissan spent a few more dollars on softening both the noise intrusion and the touchpoints, it would be twice the car it is now.As it stands, the base model is a good price, but not a good car, while the auto Ti is underdone when shopped against the competition.

…and competent budget cars rolling out of Australian showrooms.Cheap in 2011 no longer means tin-can terrible; from $11,790 for the Suzuki Alto to $12,990 for Nissan's Micra there's the choice of five, five-door hatchbacks safer, better-equipped and better-built than ever.Ten years ago the cheapest cars on the local market were the likes of the three-door Hyundai Excel at $13,990 and the Daewoo Lanos at $13,000.Since then average Australian income has jumped 21 per cent in real terms according to the ACTU even though petrol's gone from 80 cents a litre to $1.40 and more.But car prices have fallen in real terms, thanks to increased competition, a strong dollar and new brands headed this way from China.Technology, trickling down from higher-priced machines or, like stability control, mandated by authorities has made these budget cars more attractive than ever.Malaysian maker Proton were among the first to slice retail prices in the face of a feared onslaught from China, dropping the $11,990 S16 sedan into the light car battle market last November.Now Suzuki has taken the lead on pricing. (And Proton, with stock tight while waiting for a replacement, perhaps cheaper, model later this year couldn't make it to this comparison with an S16.)Their rivals are all finding new homes. While the overall car market is sluggish, down 5.3 per cent on last year, light cars have slipped only 1.4 per cent. Some 55,000 light cars were sold to the end of May, the second biggest segment after small cars and ahead of compact SUV sales figures.Suzuki Australia's general manager Tony Devers says the light car segment has grown dramatically over the past five years as Australians become more urbanised, more inner-city focussed.For Suzuki, light car buyers are split into two camps - over-45s looking for a second car and under-25s looking for university and city transport."What's the alternative - a four or five year old car with less fuel effciency and safety?" Devers says.VALUEYou get a surprising amount of kit in a cheap car these days: electric mirrors (in all but the Alto), airconditioning, plenty of safety equipment, electric windows (front only, but all four in the Chery) and quality sound systems.There is only $1200 between the cheapest and the dearest and the resale values are pretty close, too.Vehicle sizes are also much the same as is power. You would have to be Mark Webber to pick the difference between the least powerful (Alto 50kW) and the most powerful (Chery 62kW).The Micra wins on features with Bluetooth, USB input and steering wheel audio controls, but it is also the most expensive.The Alto is cheapest, but doesn't miss out on too many creature comforts except electric mirrors. And for an extra $700 the GLX has fog lights and alloys.TECHNOLOGYThe four cheapies we tested come with the new age of downsized engine. In the Micra and Alto, they are three-cylinder powerplants. The three-cylinder models were a little rough at idle, but so economical they mark the way of the future for city cars. In real world conditions, it was difficult to pick any power differences."It's surprising they are three-cylinder cars," says guest tester William Churchill. "They're pretty zippy for a three." On a low-tech note, it is difficult to distinguish the lock and unlock buttons on the Alto and Chery key fobs, while the Micra adds a car locator button that blows the horn.DESIGNThe Micra looks the most grown up and least quirky, having lost its bug eyes in the latest restyle. It also sits the nicest on its wheels, with marginal gaps in the wheel arches.One of our guest test-drivers, Amy Spencer, says she liked the slightly SUV look of the Chery. It also has smart alloy wheels and an instantly appealing interior.The Chinese have tried hard to funk up the cabin space, even if the seats lack support and some of the fit and finish isn't the best. Alto and Barina look similar on the exterior. Inside, both have comfortable and supportive seats, but the Holden trip computer is a bit too fussy and busy for easy reading.Cabin dimensions are similar across the four, although the Micra has best back seat legroom and the most luggage capacity, while the Alto's boot is tiny.The Chery also scored points with Spencer for its handy dashboard storage compartment.She and fellow volunteer test driver Penny Langfield also noted the importance of vanity mirrors on the visors. The Micra and Barina have two vanity mirrors, while the Chery has one on the passenger's side and Alto has one on the driver's side.SAFETYLangfield commented that safety is one of the most important aspects to consider."That is the thing you worry about the most with a small car," she says.But cheap doesn't mean they have scrimped on safety features. All have electronic stability control, ABS and electronic brakeforce distribution.The Chery has only dual front airbags, but the rest come with six airbags.According to the Australian New Car Assessment Program, the Chery has a three-star crash rating, Barina and Alto four stars and the Micra has not yet been tested, but the previous model with only dual front airbags had a three-star rating.DRIVINGWe took our three young volunteer drivers on a short city-based drive with plenty of hills and some freeway cruising. The Chery suffered a little from being straight out of the box with only about 150km on the odo and most of that on test.It may still be bedding in the brakes, but they felt mushy until they warmed up. Then they got a bit firmer, but still lacked initial bite and feel.The Chery's airconditioning also has a ringing sound in the fan which may go away after a while.We also noticed it revved a bit when you pushed in the clutch, indicating perhaps a slightly sticky throttle while still new.Yet the Chery drew favourable comments from all quarters for its responsive and "zippy" engine. However, Langfield noted it was "a bit sluggish coming up the hill"."I've heard all the hype about this being the cheapest car, but it goes better than I thought it would," she says. Spencer was rapt with the sound system: "It's great when you ramp it up."However, she instantly fell in love with the Micra."I liked this car from when I reversed it out of the carpark. It's quite zippy. I love the big mirrors. I like how the dashboard gives it a bit of space. It's not cramped up."She also liked the fact the seat height adjustment in the Micra and Suzuki: "It's great for short people."Churchill says the Micra's instruments are easy to read and found the audio controls on the steering wheel convenient."Smooth" was the word for Langfield to described the power, gearshift and ride."It's got a good audio system. The radio is nice and high," she says as she pumps up the volume on Triple J. She also likes the ample cup holders.The Barina is a no-fuss, solid and strong city car. "It's simple to drive but the LCD screen on the instrument panel is a bit distracting and very busy," says Churchill. Langfield agrees, but says, "I'm sure you would get used to it after a while."She liked the "smooth gear action" but found it "a bit gutless in places, but it picks up when you need it".The Suzuki surprised us all with its plucky three-cylinder engine. "It takes off when you want it to. It feels more intuitive and responsive," says Langfield.But Spencer laments the lack of boot space. "There'll be no camping weekends with this boot."Churchill says the gearshift was easy and the clutch feels light. "It's the most simple to get in and just drive."VERDICTThe Chery is the real surprise. It's better than we thought and attracted some good comments for styling, audio and power.The Barina feels safe, strong and reliable, while the Micra feels the most refined, although the most expensive. But we have to agree with the punters.While we found good and different points across the four we appreciate the Suzuki's willingness and price point as the leader of this pack.Last word goes to Langfield: "All these cars are better than my car so I really can't complain."VOTINGPenny Langfield: 1 Alto, 2 Micra, 3 Barina, 4 Chery. "It just feels good to drive. You feel like you are driving a real car, not a toy".Amy Spencer: 1 Micra, 2 Alto, 3 Barina, 4 Chery. "An all-round good car. It has a bit of storage space and just looks and feels good to drive."William Churchill: 1 Alto, 2 Barina, 3 Chery, 4 Micra. "I can get in and didn't need to get used to driving it. Raised in the digital age, they expect to have 24/7 accessibility to their friends and family as well as the must-have iPods and internet savvy smart phones.  Their needs also extend to their cars. They want the latest in-car gadgets but in many cases are not prepared to pay for it, according to a JD Power survey published in the US last year.The survey of more than 19,000 car buyers also found that today's buyer expects standard features but may not necessarily use them.  About half of car owners surveyed us an auxiliary input jack for their portable digital music player in their vehicle, while about 20 per cent use a wireless FM transmitter.Almost two-thirds want the ability to listen to a portable digital music player through their vehicle's speakers, while 27 per cent say they want ‘smart’ phone music capabilities mated to the car stereo.Other findings show that 68 per cent of owners use their vehicle's in-car Bluetooth, compared with 47 per cent who have this feature but do not use it.Entertainment and connectivity related devices are among the most desired technologies for buyers, leading to companies like Ford introducing Bluetooth and voice activation controls as standard in its Fiesta LX and Zetec.To test the JD Power theory, Carsguide gave four Gen Y buyers an opportunity to try out several cars specifically aimed at them.  After spending a few days checking them out, they came back with some surprising findings.What Gen Y wants in a carSteering wheel mounted audio controlsPowerful amplifierSub-wooferMood-lightingMetallic finish dashboardPrivacy glassPersonalised seat trimAirbagsiPod connectivityUSB/CD/MP3 connectivityVolkswagen Beetle CabrioKatherine FirkinThis car looks so cute I easily got as much enjoyment out of seeing it parked in my driveway as I did actually driving it.  With its chic exterior and sleak styling, the VW Beetle Cabrio looks more like a fashion accessory then a practical mode of transport.Getting behind the wheel for the first time is a bit daunting, unless you're used to driving in a bubble.  The curved dashboard seems to stretch out endlessly, making it difficult to perceive the distance between yourself and the car in front of you.And like every good fashion accessory, what it adds in looks and style, it lacks in practicality.  The biggest shortfall is the size of the boot. The compartment is so small you'd be struggling to ever pack more then a plane's hand-luggage allowance, and trying to wiggle your bags in and out of the compartment is a nightmare.The visibility is also poor.  While you do eventually get used to guessing how much space is left in front of you, don't even try to reverse the car when the top is down.With the top lowered, rearward vision is almost totally blocked - which possibly explains why the car has such an outrageously loud horn.  Even with the roof up, over-the-shoulder visibility is still poor.Lowering the roof is also not as easy as you'd expect. It was disappointing to discover you have to muscle the roof on and off with a twist-and-rotate action - not the easy click-of-a-button motion I was expecting.But for all the difficulties getting the roof lowered, the drive well and truly makes up for it.  The Cabrio is relatively smooth and easy to drive.  Cruising along an open road with the top down is magic, and you can't help but notice admiring glances from other drivers.The stereo has good sound quality, and I was relieved to find an AUX port for my iPod and other bits and pieces.  The car also feels sturdy and safe, and seems to be fairly fuel efficient.The driver's seat is comfortable, although the same can't be said for your passengers - who'll either be squashed against the glove box in the front, or have their legs cramped in the back. It's certainly not the most practical car, but it sure is fun.  And if you value looks and personality over practicality - and who doesn't? - you'll be hard-pressed not to fall in love.LikesThe overall look and feelThe sound systemThe easy manoeuvrabilityDislikesThe tacky plastic flowers that come as standardThe poor visibility, especially when the top is downThe slight groaning noise the car often makes when you take your foot off the breakVolkswagen Beetle CabrioPrice: From $37,700Engine: 2.0-litreEconomy: 8.8 litres/100kmFeatures: Dual front and side head airbags, anti-skid brakes, air conditioning, electronic stability control, vase with flower, 10-speaker CD stereo, iPod adaptor, electric windows If you like this try this: Peugeot 207CCNissan MicraNathan Mawby‘THAT'S so cute’ are not words most guys want to hear about their car.  If the veiled snickering from the men I showed it to and universal adoration from the women are anything to go by, the Nissan Micra is definitely marketed at young female drivers.Having said that, guys, if you're prepared to embrace your inner-woman (just borrow a Dirty Dancing soundtrack before you hit the road and you'll be right) this is a car that will grow on you.  A ‘make-up’ mirror in the driver's side sunvisor left my hair looking the best it has in years and a surprisingly gutsy 1.4-litre, four cylinder engine (hello, fuel economy!) was versatile enough to zip around the city and hit the freeway.The first thing to note is that the Micra is tiny, microscopic even.  Perfect if you're going to be driving around the city, or inner suburbs - not so good if you're the designated driver and need leg room to stop back-seat fights.Meanwhile responsive steering helps with maneuverability in traffic, narrow lanes, the fast food drive-through and parking.  I even found myself seeking out the dreaded reverse parallel park in heavy traffic just for funsies!Thanks to clever design you can see everything going on outside the car - unfortunately that also means everything inside is on display.  Nissan balance this with clever hidey holes: a sliding tray under the passenger seat and the boot is completely concealed from the outside world.But if like many Gen-Y's you run your life from your iPhone, hiding the AUX port in the back of the glove box could present a problem when you have to sift through it to find your phone.  But no matter what you listen to, a robust sound system means you can listen to it loud - a necessity for Australia's iPod affected youth.There are few basic issues, sacrificing your masculinity aside, that give you pause, however.  No tachometer, having to hit a button to see the time (how many Gen-Y's actually wear a watch?) and no obvious temperature gauge probably won't bother the targeted drivers.The absence of side and curtain airbags as a standard feature should (they are available as part of the City Collection Option, though).  Sure there are "blokier" options out there - but if you picked one of them you'd probably have to give back that Dirty Dancing soundtrack...LikesManoeuvrabilitySound systemVisibilityDislikesNo tachometerNon-standard side and curtain airbagsGender biasNissan MicraPrice: From $15,990Engine: 1.4-litreEconomy: 6.8 litres/100kmFeatures: Four-speed automatic, Dual front airbags, anti-skid brakes, air conditioning, MP3 player input, CD stereo, front seat storage draw If you like this try this: Holden BarinaKia SoulTravis KennedyTaking a brand new Kia Soul for a spin was easy to accept - especially given the fact my regular drive is an old Honda Legend with 300,000km on the clock and the squeaks and creaks that goes with the longevity. I'm very much an A-to-B type of driver.  I rarely venture into long drives, unless I have to. The Soul is not the type of car that would normally appeal to me -- a bloke in his early-twenties, who would probably call it "a bit of a girl's car".  It's just not the type of car most hot-blooded young men would choose if part of the buying criteria was to turn the collective heads of the opposite sex.It won't: But I swallowed my pride and hit the road. Without overstating the obvious, the car is a bit of a box.  It's almost as if it has an identity crisis -- on one hand it looks like a 4WD and, on the other, it has small car aesthetics.It makes a bold impression on the road with its unique look and, interestingly, I noticed many drivers paying it quite a lot of attention.  The Soul is the perfect commuter, giving great flexibility moving in and out of bumper-to-bumper traffic.Parking is a cinch, but beware blind spots caused by chunky rear end of the car. They can be dangerous, especially when reversing.  The 1.6-litre diesel engine makes a noticeably loud chugging sound, but all is forgiven by its excellent fuel economy. The Soul handles well on the open road.It does lack a little instantaneous grunt, especially when on the freeway, but it's still zippy for most regular traffic situations.  The lack of cruise control is a little annoying.Inside, there is a surprising amount of room for the driver, but back seat passengers may struggle for leg room. The boot is small, but the rear seats fold flat to open up reasonable amount of space for most items.  Tech-savvy buyers will love the interior features - the inbuilt USB port for iPod connectivity and the rather punchy sound system are impressive.I like listening to my music loud and this system more than met my expectations.  The speakers also have red lights that pulse to the beat of the music or can be toned down to a softer-mood setting -- a little bit tacky, but it makes night driving more interesting.The Soul won't appeal to everyone and, being a young man, I feel it's more suited to the female market or middle-aged singles looking for a nippy, economical car.  It's a bit of a grower, though -- the more I drove it, the more it won me over.LikesHandles very wellEasy to parkEconomical dieselDislikesRear blind spotsNo cruise controlRear passenger leg room is less than generous.Kia Soul Price: From $20,990Engine: 1.6-litre petrol or dieselEconomy: 5.2 litres/100kmFeatures: Dual front, side and curtain airbags, anti-skid brakes, air conditioning, central locking, MP3 CD stereo with six-speakers, Aux/iPod input If you like this try this: Fiat 500Honda JazzAntonia MageeBeing at the upper end of Generation Y, I knew the Jazz VT-i was not for me as soon as I pulled onto Swan St, Richmond in pouring rain on a Friday night only to see several saturated people stop and stare as I drove past in the blazing yellow vehicle.I know that is just the colour, but I am part of an apparently fickle generation and the way the car looked was important to me.  On first glance inside though, the Jazz had everything a Gen Y driver would be looking for.The extra windows, huge windscreen and big dashboard made me feel as though I was in a much bigger car, the back seat was roomy and the boot was much larger than it looked.  The technology was on the pulse, with a MP3 plug for one's iPod and a quality stereo and CD player.And as one would expect from any car in the new generation of excessive paraphernalia, the storage space was excellent.  There are several pockets and holders for coffees, phones, CDs, iPods and sunglasses.It was also extremely nifty driving around the streets of the CBD and parking in a tight spot was a dream.  But the real test for me was when it was pushed to its upper limits.Four months after selling my own car I was, finally, able to hit the open road without relying on someone else to pick me up and drop me home.  After the impressive feel while driving around the city, the car was a tad unimpressive on the freeways of Melbourne. The problem was once I hit 100km/h.That is the speed limit, I hear you say, but the VT-i just didn't feel completely comfortable going even that fast.  The 1.5-litre four felt a little buzzy and in need of a sixth gear to cope. It made me feel like I was straining the car.There is no doubt it is fuel efficient around town - Honda says the 1.5-litre manual VT-i will sip 6.4 litres for every 100km - but the little hatch ran out of legs while out on the open road.  This could be a problem for a young person doing a long daily commute, but for a student or worker not having to travel too far, you would be hard pressed to go past the Jazz for a zippy, modern city car.It felt just a tinge tinny, but to be fair it ticks all the boxes for a $18,000-plus car. Nissan Micra 2007 Review

The current exchange rate allows Nissan to bring the little car in at a starting price of $14,990, saying that leaves them “a small profit margin.”That margin and the price; will probably be reviewed if the dollar drops in the near future.But for now a key factor to help keep the price low is the strategy of bringing in only a single version; a five-door hatch with a 1.4-litre petrol engine and four-speed automatic transmission.Overseas markets also get the choice of a 1.5-litre turbo diesel, 1.2 and 1.6-litre petrol engines, with the options of manual and continuously variable auto boxes.Sourced from Japan, the car that has arrived here is already three years old, but Nissan says it has another three years of life.Design-wise there’s no reason to doubt that, because the styling looks fresh among our traffic. It’s still a tall-proportioned little bubble, but the nose is less bulbous than we remember on the one we waved goodbye to a decade ago, and the rear’s rounded haunches give it a cheeky appeal.The patterned chocolate fabric on the seats and doors is probably very groovy; or whatever the 'hot’ word is this week; but we would have happily traded it for a more conventional grey or black. And the cream coloured controls on the centre stack needed another cream accent in the line of vision to make them blend more into the cabin design.There’s a reasonable amount of equipment for the price, including airconditioning, driver’s armrest, central locking and 14” steel wheels.But there’s no light on the vanity mirror, and oddly no tacho; perhaps they think their mainly young female target market doesn’t care what the revs are, and perhaps they’re mainly right.Storage solutions include a clever drawer under the seat and a second compartment in the glove box.Safety and security fit-out incorporates an immobiliser, childproof rear door locks, side intrusion beams and a collapsible steering column, and includes anti-lock brakes (disc front, drum rear) with braking enhancement systems, speed-sensitive power steering and twin front airbags, but the middle of the back seat gets only a lap belt.The four-star crash rated European model (Euro NCAP) gets a middle lap-sash, but otherwise the safety fit-out is identical.A $1700 option pack gives you 15” alloy wheels, MP3 compatible six-stack CD player and twin side and curtain airbags.At this stage we are not able to get the stability program on some of the overseas models, but it will be brought in as soon as it is available. However Nissan is not overly concerned about getting the diesel variant; as in such a small car the fuel saving would be marginal; although they may look to one of the other petrol drivetrains if the car is a success.Sales are hoped to hit about 400-500 a month “and maybe even more.” On the roadWith its high roofline, the cabin offers plenty of headroom and doesn’t feel cramped for shoulder space in the front. However, the rear seat is not where you’d want to put a couple of adults for a long trip; or three even if it’s a short one.Tilt but no reach adjustment on the steering wheel can make it a bit tricky to find the best driving positionThe engine develops 72kW at 5600rpm and 137Nm and 3200rpm, which takes about 14 seconds to get the light car to100km/h, with the overtaking zone of 90-110km/h taking about 9 seconds. Basically, you emboss your shoe tread into the carpet; and wait.And this is where the little engine really needs a simulated manual mode to help it through, as well as on hills where the four-speed auto dithers about which gear it wants to be in.It’s certainly nimble enough to dart in and out of traffic gaps, but there’s not enough mumbo there to fight off a bigger rival if they decide to force the issue.A best-in-class turning circle of 8.8 metres makes it easy to get around in tight spots and corners, with the parking dimples on the front headlights helping to judge where the car’s corners are.To test that out we headed into a couple of backstreet laneways with an obstacle course of wheelie bins and the little Micra came through undefeated; and unscratched.And with the wheels pushed out towards the car’s corners, it handled surprisingly well on the highway and through some speedier cornering, while the McPherson strut front and torsion beam rear suspension coped very well with rough and patched bitumen.A bonus for those on a budget will be the car’s claimed fuel economy of 6.8L/100km, although with a better-sorted transmission it could go a bit lower.But even with the standard four-speed auto; older technology as it is; the Micra will offer a lot of fun, particularly to the targeted first-time buyer looking for a friendmobile to do the beach and café rounds. SnapshotNissan MicraPrice: $14,990Engine: 1.4-litre four cylinderTransmission: four-speed automatic
