Volkswagen announces discount drive-away pricing on new Polo before it’s even arrived in showrooms.

The first R-Line upgrade on a Golf and price cuts on the Jetta are Volkswagen’s model-year 2014 range revision highlights. Showroom-wide changes include a welcome upgrade to the Beetle but price increases of up to $2000 on some models.The R-Line Package - $2200 on the popular Golf Highline and $2000 on the niche Beetle - adds a raft of racy badges, trim, go-fast kit plus sports suspension, 18-inch alloys, faster steering and paddle-shifters.Such items should bring the Golf even closer dynamically to the GTI but the latter is now $500 more. Most Golfs cop a price rise - $250 on the Car of the Year Comfortline and $300 on the Highline. An extra $400 is now asked for the Cabriolet and $300 for the Beetle. Steeper stickers adorn the Polo - $250 on the Comfortline, $350 on the GTI. The three-door version of the hot hatch has been dropped.Tiguan buyers are looking at $400 extra on the Pacific or $500 for the top-line 155 TSI. A Passat adds $500 for the 130 TDI and Alltrack and $750 for the V6. Touareg buyers have to find $800 extra for the V6 diesel and $2000 for the V8.Only the slow-selling Jetta gets price relief - $1500 off the 118TSI and $3250 from the Comfortline. It also loses the 103 TDI Comfortline and quick 147TSI Highline. Elsewhere the Beetle, to date one of the few locally sold VWs with basic rear suspension, now features the multi-link independent setup of the superseded Mark VI Golf. There’s new paint too - “candy white”, if you like.Next month the new Golf R and GTI Performance version arrive. 

FIVE of the top-selling cars in India, including the Tata Nano -- billed as the world's cheapest car -- have failed their first independent crash tests, fuelling fresh safety fears in a country where road deaths are the highest in the world.The Nano, Ford's Figo, Hyundai's i10, Volkswagen's Polo and Maruti Suzuki all scored zero out of five in a test conducted by the New Car Assessment Program. The tests, which simulated a head-on collision at 64km/h, indicated that drivers of each of the cars would suffer life-threatening injuries.The Nano, which starts at 145,000 rupees ($2650), was shown to be particularly unsafe, the report said. "It's worrying to see levels of safety that are 20 years behind the five-star standards now common in Europe and North America," said Max Mosley, head of NCAP Global.The five models represent 20 per cent of the more than 2.7 million new cars sold every year in India, where 133,938 people were killed in road traffic accidents in 2011, equivalent to about 10 per cent of the total across the world. The number of deaths has increased from 118,000 in 2008.Ford and VW equip their new cars with airbags and other safety equipment in Europe, the US and other markets where they have to do so, but not in India, where they are not required by law and where customers demand prices are kept as low as possible."Indian cars are not safe and they are often poorly maintained," said Harman Singh Sadhu, president of Arrive Safe, a road safety campaign group in Chandigarh. The rising death toll is blamed on chaotic and poorly designed roads, low levels of driver training and a growing drink-driving problem. Only 27 per cent of Indian drivers wear seat belts. 

Volkswagen has revealed its mid-cycle facelift for the Polo light hatch range, with subtle styling tweaks, new features and updated drivetrains to bring the popular light hatch in line with the MkVII Golf.DESIGNFive years after the popular fifth-generation Polo first appeared, the new 2014 model’s styling tweaks are typically Volkswagen subtle, with new head and taillights, grille, front and rear bumpers and six new wheel designs that evolve the 6R Polo design to match VW’s more recent offerings.New LED headlights and adaptive sports suspension will also be available for the first time, while the electric power steering system has been updated for improved steering feel.On the inside, a new centre console, the MkVII Golf’s steering wheel, and instrument and centre-stack layouts are the key changes, along with revised materials.MULTIMEDIAThe new Polo also brings the availability of the MkVII Golf’s MIB multimedia system, with varying degrees of functionality that include satnav, Bluetooth phone and audio, DAB+ digital radio, MirrorLink smartphone app integration, a proximity touchscreen, and two-finger map zooming. Mobile phone reception can also be expanded by connecting with the radio antenna via inductive coupling.ENGINES/ECONOMYThe 2014 Polo’s revised engine lineup now meet Euro-6 emissions regulations, and Volkswagen is boasting efficiency gains of up to 21 per cent with Bluemotion stop-start system and regenerative braking now available on all versions. The new European lineup kicks off with 44kW and 55kW versions of the 1.0-litre three cylinder petrol found in the Up, and will soon be joined by a 66kW turbocharged 1.0-litre Bluemotion TSI that consumes just 4.1L/100km on the European cycle.Turbocharged petrol fours in 66kW and 81kW will also be available, and the Polo BlueGT available in Europe jumps from 103kW to 110kW. The flagship Polo GTI hot hatch will also boost power from its twin-charged TSFI 1.4 from 132-141kW to combat the Peugeot 208 GTi, Ford Fiesta ST, and Renault Clio RS. Three new 1.4-litre three-cylinder turbodiesel engines will replace the previous 1.2 and 1.4-litre TDI units, but match the outgoing engines’ power levels of 55kW, 66kW and 77kW. Power and torque curves have been flattened to improve driveability however, along with significant efforts to improve diesel clatter and vibration.The efficiency leader will once again be the specific Bluemotion TDI model, which sees its combined fuel figure drop to 3.2L/100km on the European cycle. Volkswagen boasts that the new 66kW TDI with DSG auto matches the old Bluemotion’s 3.4L/100km Euro figure, and represents a 21 percent gain over the previous 66kW TDI with DSG.SAFETYVolkswagen’s Automatic Post-Collision Braking System is now standard for European models, and the Driver Alert System, Front Assist traffic monitoring system with City Emergency Braking, adaptive cruise control, and a reversing camera will be available for the first time.The updated 2014 Polo range will likely appear in Australian showrooms after mid-year.This reporter is on Twitter: @Mal_Flynn  

Volkswagen is reportedly readying a high performance all-wheel drive R version of the Polo, to mark the Polo’s first-year World Rally Championship title with Sebastien Ogier in 2013.Volkswagen has already teased at such a model with the limited-build and front-wheel drive Polo R WRC in 2013, but Autocar reports that an all-wheel drive version is headed for regular production.Such a model would sit above the existing Polo GTI, and likely use a version of the 2.0-litre turbo and all-wheel drivetrain of the limited-build Audi A1 quattro from 2011 and the new Audi S1 due for a Geneva reveal in March.The A1 quattro used the 188kW-spec 2.0-litre from the MkVI Golf R, but a Polo R would likely use the current Golf GTI’s 162kW 2.0-litre to avoid cannibalising the 221kW (European-spec) MkVII Golf R.Unlike the manual-only A1 quattro, the Polo R is likely to be available with a six-speed DSG dual clutch transmission, which along with all-wheel traction could see 0-100 acceleration drop from the Polo R WRC’s 6.4 seconds to below 6.0.This reporter is on Twitter: @Mal_Flynn

Improvements to safety, features, and efficiency are expected, and should be a winner if the smaller new Rondo is anything to go by. The only obvious changes are around the nose, with a modified air intake, but the Polo is likely to get a value boost before it follows Golf 7 into a total overhaul late in 2014.This reporter is on Twitter: @paulwardgover  

Jost Capito joined Volkswagen in May of 2012 as the head of Volkswagen’s motorsports division. Prior to this, Capito worked at Ford, where he was head of its Global Performance Vehicles group, and ultimately the man responsible for products like the Ford Focus RS.In other words, he knows a thing or two about making cars go fast, as well as building cars that are slightly over-the-top. Now that he’s settled in at Volkswagen, Whatcar is reporting that Capito wants to expand VW’s performance car offerings, and we say that’s a very good thing.In addition to getting the Polo WRC car ready for the 2013 Monte Carlo Rally, Capito is expected to take on more responsibility for the development of future production cars. While the Polo R (set to debut at next year’s Geneva Motor Show) is a given, we see potential in VW models ranging from the GTI through the Passat and even the Touareg.Rumors of a higher-performance, lightweight GTI are already circulating, though the car is likely to be limited in production. Could the processes developed for this car (like the blending of carbon fiber, aluminum and steel in assembly) be applied to future VW models?Our guess would be yes. The key to future performance Volkswagens will be saving weight as much as boosting power, and the lessons learned from VW’s WRC efforts could pay dividends here.In Capito’s words, “I have always had the view that the production cars have to support and reflect what is happening on the circuits and rally stages. I implemented that at Ford, and that view hasn’t changed now that I’m at VW.By definition it would mean more than the Polo R.” Capito went on to clarify that his immediate focus is on getting ready for the 2013 WRC season.
