Tiguan R-Line, new Scirocco R, expanded Golf range, new Polo GTI, revised Jetta and new Passat to help maintain Volkswagen sales growth.  Volkswagen has a range of revised and new models planned to help maintain the brand's current sales strength, despite the overall Australian new car market being down 2.1 per cent so far this year. VW Australia's managing director John White expects these new models to help strong sales of the existing Golf, Polo, Tiguan and Touareg to top the brand's 54,892 unit 2013 result, particularly considering the 32,562 units sold by VW to the end of July already represent a 3.8 percent increase year to date. "Overall this year, we believe that even with a market that's going to be down, we should be ahead of last year," he said.Starting with the revised Polo light hatch that arrives in showrooms this week, a revised version of the strong-selling Tiguan SUV will also touch down in September, strengthening its appeal ahead of an all-new model that is still at least two years away. TIGUAN R-LINEThis will see the Tiguan fitted with a standard reversing camera, rear parking sensors and a colour touchscreen display for the first time, plus the addition of a performance-themed Tiguan R-Line model with a 130kW turbodiesel engine as a new range-topper. GOLF R-LINE WAGONA wagon version of the Golf R-Line will appear in October, based on the success of the sports styled option pack available on existing Highline Golf hatch models.SCIROCCO RThis will be followed in November by the surprise arrival of the refreshed Scirocco R performance coupe, which was widely tipped as a non-starter for Australia after the also slow-selling Up and Eos models were discontinued in April. The revised Scirocco R made its first appearance at the Geneva motor show in March, with styling that has been brought in line with the Mk7 Golf R that arrived here in April.Mr White cited a positive response from the public, media and dealers as a key reason for the model's return to our shores, but it will be accompanied by a new sales strategy."There is going to be significant simplification in terms of colours and option packs, and significant reduction in the expectation of sales, where we are going to focus on making the Scirocco R a low volume, highly desirable vehicle," he said. POLO GTIA revised version of the hot Polo GTI is set to appear at the Paris motor show in September, before arriving down under in the first half of 2015. The GTI will score similar visual and interior upgrades to the regular Polo, but will boost power from 132-141kW and is also tipped to bring a manual transmission for the first time in a Mk5 Polo GTI.JETTAA refreshed Jetta mid-size sedan will also make its way to Australia in the first half of 2015, and John White is expecting the new model to better challenge segment leaders like the Toyota Camry and Mazda6, unlike the current model which has fallen 35 per cent year to date and is currently outsold by the 6 by more than 3:1."We're taking a look at the way that we're going to be configuring the car line, and you can count on the car line having more features and benefits to it, as we look to maximise the opportunities for the Jetta and make it a much better volume competitor," he said.  GOLF ALLTRACKMr White also confirmed the local future of a high-riding all-wheel drive Golf Alltrack wagon near the end of the first half of 2015, with the new model to follow a similar formula to the Alltrack version of the Passat wagon.PASSATRounding out 2015 for Volkswagen will be the all-new Passat that is due to make its public debut at the Paris motor show in September. Sharper looking Passat promises improved tech, efficiency and family-friendliness.

New Volkswagen Passat heads upmarket with sharp styling and new technology.Volkswagen has released the first images of the new eighth-generation Passat, ahead of the mid-sized model’s public debut at the Paris motor show in September. With styling that adheres to Volkswagen’s recent preference for evolution rather than revolution, the new B8 model features a lower and wider stance,  with a  bold character line that runs the length of the car. Reduced overhangs and a shorter bootlid contribute to a more coupe-like profile, helping to distance the new model from its more restrained predecessor. This classy design continues inside, with attention paid to material quality and a new dashboard with hidden ventilation ducts. A 12.3-inch LCD display will also be available in place of traditional analogue dials for the instrument cluster.The new Passat will launch in both sedan and wagon bodystyles, with both offering larger interior dimensions despite the sedan being 2mm shorter, 12mm wider and 14mm lower than before.The wheelbase has also gained 79mm and the front and rear tracks have been widened. The sedan’s boot has grown by 21-litres to an enormous 586-litres, while the wagon’s cargo area has swollen by 47-litres to 650-litres – or a whopping 1780-litres with the rear seats folded.As with the current Golf, the new Passat employs the VW Group’s flexible and lightweight MQB architecture. The resultant use of high strength steel, hot-formed steel and aluminium in the body structure has helped to save up to 85kg over the current B7 model.In overseas markets the new Passat will be offered with up to ten different diesel or petrol four-cylinder engines, all featuring direct injection and turbocharging. Power varies from 89 to 209kW, and some models also feature Volkswagen’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive system over the standard front-drive setup. The new model is available with either a six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch automatic with stop/start and brake energy recuperation technologies. A hybrid model that can run in full electric mode for up to 50 kilometres is also available, but is unlikely to reach our shores.  Among the long list of options are LED headlights, heads-up display, 360-degree multi-camera system, automated parking functions and adaptive cruise control with slow-speed capability. Also available will be a world-first Trailer Assist program, intended to help with the age-old trailer reversing dilemma by enabling the driver to control the approach angle of a trailer via the wing-mirror adjustment joystick. Australian specifications and pricing are yet to be confirmed, but the new B8 Passat is expected to arrive in local showrooms in 2015.

Photos of the next VW Passat have leaked, giving us clear angles on the changes to expect for styling and trim when the car is officially revealed later this year at October's Paris motor show.The images come via a Chinese internet site, and while poorly etched and somewhat fuzzy still offer a good look at what's been under the camouflage of the vehicles snapped by spy photographers during testing.The car shown is the Magotan version of the Passat for the Chinese market, a model that gets an extra 10cm stretch for the wheelbase but otherwise pretty much reflects what we'll see here.The Passat's styling remains restrained and conservative, with an unfussy front fascia but in this iteration quite a bit of chrome around the grille area. LED daytime running lights and a strong character line for the shoulder should give it some road presence.There are some strong hints of VW Group styling with Audi influence for the taillights, while the boot lip spoiler sculpting and the dual exhausts integrated neatly into the bumper give the rear some visual interest.No indications yet of the engine line-up, but with the Passat to be based on VW's flexible -- and almost ubiquitous -- MQB platform (which can take virtually any likely engine in the Group stable) the possibilities are myriad.However the local line-up is unlikely to stray far from the current mix, which kicks off with a 118kW/250NM four-cylinder 1.8-litre turbo petrol, followed by a 130kW/380Nm four-cylinder 2.0-litre turbodiesel and topped by a 220kW/350Nm 3.6-litre petrol V6.The big changes you can look for are probably going to be in the safety and features areas, where VW continues to roll up improving technology.

The first R-Line upgrade on a Golf and price cuts on the Jetta are Volkswagen’s model-year 2014 range revision highlights. Showroom-wide changes include a welcome upgrade to the Beetle but price increases of up to $2000 on some models.The R-Line Package - $2200 on the popular Golf Highline and $2000 on the niche Beetle - adds a raft of racy badges, trim, go-fast kit plus sports suspension, 18-inch alloys, faster steering and paddle-shifters.Such items should bring the Golf even closer dynamically to the GTI but the latter is now $500 more. Most Golfs cop a price rise - $250 on the Car of the Year Comfortline and $300 on the Highline. An extra $400 is now asked for the Cabriolet and $300 for the Beetle. Steeper stickers adorn the Polo - $250 on the Comfortline, $350 on the GTI. The three-door version of the hot hatch has been dropped.Tiguan buyers are looking at $400 extra on the Pacific or $500 for the top-line 155 TSI. A Passat adds $500 for the 130 TDI and Alltrack and $750 for the V6. Touareg buyers have to find $800 extra for the V6 diesel and $2000 for the V8.Only the slow-selling Jetta gets price relief - $1500 off the 118TSI and $3250 from the Comfortline. It also loses the 103 TDI Comfortline and quick 147TSI Highline. Elsewhere the Beetle, to date one of the few locally sold VWs with basic rear suspension, now features the multi-link independent setup of the superseded Mark VI Golf. There’s new paint too - “candy white”, if you like.Next month the new Golf R and GTI Performance version arrive. 

Volkswagen has issued a worldwide recall of 2.6 million vehicles --including more than 44,000 cars in Australia -- for possible fuel leaks, electrical faults and gearbox problems.It is the second significant recall in Australia in five months for the German car maker, which is suspected by industry observers of taking shortcuts in its bid to overtake Toyota to become the world’s biggest car maker by 2018.The recall comes as the Victorian Coroner today announced there was no evidence of a mechanical fault with a Volkswagen Golf involved in a fatal crash in Melbourne in 2011.The car was struck from behind by a truck. The coroner investigated the incident after it was alleged the car lost power suddenly, following similar complaints from other Volkswagen owners.The vehicles in the latest recall include more than 17,000 Tiguan SUVs because "a fuse may blow … thus resulting in failure of one of the two vehicle light circuits".Approximately 16,000 Volkswagen Amarok pick-ups are being recalled because "some Amarok utes with a 2.0-litre turbo diesel engine may be affected by leaks to the fuel pipe within the engine compartment".Furthermore, about 11,000 Volkswagens across various models equipped with the company’s controversial twin-clutch automatic "DSG" gearbox will be recalled because "electric malfunctions could occur in rare cases in the gearbox power supply if synthetic gearbox oil is used".In June 2013 Volkswagen recalled more than 25,000 cars in Australia for gearbox problems after a fortnight of unprecedented pressure from disgruntled customers, following the announcement of the Victorian Corner's investigation.The vehicles affected in the June 2013 recall were built between June 2008 and September 2011 and included the Golf hatchback, the Jetta sedan, the Polo hatchback, the Passat sedan and wagon and the Caddy van.Complaints highlighted in the lead-up to that campaign included cars that conked out or lost power suddenly, high oil use, and gearbox reliability issues.Several customers reported having their engines and/or gearboxes replaced while others complained about the  $5000 to $10,000 expense of fixing these parts once the warranty had expired.In addition to the previous recall announced in June, Volkswagen Australia also called about 2800 diesel cars back to dealerships for inspection.The company says anyone experiencing faults with their Volkswagen to contact their local Volkswagen dealer.Volkswagen Australia has set up a dedicated customer service line to answer customer queries -- 1800 504 076. 

Volkswagen is issuing recalls and advisories for about 2.6 million vehicles world-wide, including about 43,700 in Australia, for a range of three defects. The Australian vehicles include more than 16,700 Tiguan SUVs recalled for a fault that means a fuse can blow, causing one of the two vehicle light circuits to fail. About 16,000 Volkswagen Amarok utes are being recalled because of fuel pipe leaks affecting the 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine.The remaining 11,000 cars range across various models that have VW's twin-clutch automatic DSG gearbox, in which an electrical defect could occur if synthetic gearbox oil is used," Volkswagen says..A large proportion of the 2.6 million global recall is in China -- VW's largest market -- after a problem was found there in the same gearbox that triggered a recall earlier this year. The Chinese recall affects 750,000 Volkswagen and Audi vehicles that use the Chinesee-built DSG gearbox there.  Vehicles on the China recall list include the Volkswagen Golf, Beetle and Passat and several Audi models.It's the second recall this year on the DSG. In June more than 25,000 Australian cars were recalled for gearbox problems after pressure from disgruntled customers. Those vehicles included the Golf hatchback, Jetta sedan, Polo hatchback, Passat sedan and wagon and the Caddy van.Volkswagen said it is recalling 800,000 (2008-11) Tiguan SUVs and 239,000 Amaroks around the world, bringing the total number of cars affected in the three safety actions to 2.6 million.While the number of vehicles is large, analysts estimated the cost of the repairs could be relatively small. Still, the fresh problems that have surfaced with the gearbox might further dent Volkswagen's reputation in China and strain its relations with its local venture partner, SAIC.The gearbox only has problems in hot and humid climates, said Volkswagen spokesman Peter Heinz Thul. In warm climates, additives in the synthetic oil can damage the electronics. VW is proposing to replace the oil with a mineral oil that has been used previously without problems, Mr. Thul said.Volkswagen issued a recall in March in China for nearly 400,000 vehicles to fix an electronic malfunction on the same DQ200 gearbox. It said the problem was resolved with a software fix.VW officials told Chinese regulatory officials about the most recent problem earlier this week, Mr. Thul said. The automaker then agreed that a recall should be issued.Volkswagen Australia is yet to determine the impact on local models for this latest recall, but will "ensure these recalls are conducted promptly and efficiently", according to Managing Director John White, and relevant owners will be notified by mail.This latest recall follows the 25,928 Volkswagen vehicles recalled in June over similar issues with DSG transmissions manufacured between 2008-11, of which 40 per cent have been rectified to date and is expected to be completed next year.Volkswagen Australia says that this progress is in line with the timeframe anticipated, and that vehicles already attended to will not be affected by this new recall as their transmission fluid will have already been replaced.The company says concerned owners should contact their local Volkswagen dealer or can call a dedicated customer service number: 1800 504 076.

Four models in the Volkswagen range have recently received an engine upgrade with a power and torque increase. The Passat Sedan, Passat Wagon, Passat Alltrack and the CC with 2.0-litre common rail turbo diesel engine now come with 130kW (+5kW) of power and 380Nm (+30Nm) of torque, and now carry 130TDI badging. This change also results in a fuel consumption change on some of the models. The Passat Wagon and CC see reduced fuel consumption figures of 5.4 litres/100km (-0.3l) while the Passat Sedan now consumes 5.6 llitres/100km (-0.1l). Pricing has increased by $500 for most of these diesel variants, with the Passat Highline sedan now $44,990, Highline wagon at $46,490, and CC at $55,490. The Passat Alltrack remains at $47,790.  

One of several cars Volkswagen is showing is the Volkswagen Passat Performance Concept, a "sneak peek" of a new, sportier model of its Passat mid-size sedan with an all-new 184 kW engine under the hood.The new engine is the 1.8-litre direct-injected and turbocharged TSI four-cylinder, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission already used in European and Asian VWs.Getting that output from a four-cylinder engine smaller than 2.0 litres should give the Passat Performance model - or its production equivalent -some quite respectable fuel economy too. Not as high as the Passat TDI diesel, but pretty good for the most powerful model in the range.To denote the Passat Performance Concept's sportier credentials, it is fitted with larger 19-inch alloy wheels, a sport-tuned suspension with lower ride height, and electro-mechanical steering.To underscore its subtle but aggressive appearance, the hot-rod Passat sports a dual exhaust and bi-xenon headlights, including what VW calls an Advanced Front Lighting System, along with LED tail lights.Inside, the dashboard has "carbon-like touches," which Volkswagen says match the "carbon-style inserts" in the two-tone leather seats.
