Ono inspired Suzuki changes

He is - or was - Hirotaka Ono - a visionary who re-invented the Japanese brand and changed everything, from boosting the quality of its cars to creating the can-do attitude among senior managers that's essential for the success of any car company. Ono had a giant advantage because he was married to the daughter of company founder, Osama Suzuki. He was able to use his family connection to ramrod a range of changes which would have been impossible for anyone else, especially a 40-something revolutionary in a country which usually puts age and experience ahead of youth and enthusiasm. Even so, he still had to walk the walk on everything from design and driving enjoyment to bottom-line financial deals. The award winning Suzuki Swift is an Ono car, so too is the current Grand Vitara, as well as the Kizashi. His track record also includes the less-successful second-generation XL7, thankfully only sold in the USA, but everyone makes an occasional mistake. Ono died too early at the end of 2007, but not before he inspired the cars coming through Suzuki today and forecast the global financial crisis - as well as planning the way his company would react to the challenge."Thanks to Mr Ono we have learned what we can do. He inspired us," says Tak Hayasaki, managing director of Suzuki Australia. Hayasaki has his own challenges in trying to lift Suzuki's share of Australia's annual car sales from its current 2.4 per cent to around six per cent, but he knows he has the strongest lineup in the company's history. The Alto is too small for a lot of people, but a $12,990 driveway bottom line makes plenty of sense with six airbags, ABS and ESP, as well as alloy wheels. The Swift is getting very old but is still a good car, the Grand Vitara is a safe choice and the SX4 does a good enough job.Kizashi is the game-changer for Suzuki, the same as the first Mazda6 and Accord Euro were for Mazda and Honda, combining Euro-type driving enjoyment with Japanese quality. This week the company is adding an all-wheel drive car to the Kizashi line, the Sports, and believes it can boost its sales by 100 cars a month. That's 50 per cent of the current volume. It's a big call for a car which already goes head-to-head with Mazda6 and Euro and now faces up to the might of the Subaru Liberty, the car that convinced Australians about all-wheel drive. As he looks forward, with a new Swift before the end of the year - not that you would pick it as all-new from pictures - Hayasaki knows where the credit goes. "I have to thankyou to Mr Ono for what he has given us. He proved that we can do it."
Popular SUVs do badly in crush test

Of the 12 off-roaders tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in the United States just four earned a top rating of ``good'' and three were ``acceptable''.The tests were designed by the institute to provide new roof strength ratings. The Volkswagen Tiguan has the strongest rated roof and the Kia Sportage the weakest.Roofs on the Honda CRV and Ford Escape are marginal, and the Kia's is poor. The Tiguan, Subaru Forester, Jeep Patriot and a car sold in the US, the Honda Element, earn good ratings. The Suzuki Grand Vitara, Toyota RAV4 and Mitsubishi Outlander rated acceptable. The Chevrolet Equinox and Nissan Rogue, both just sold in North America, also rated acceptable.A spokesman for the Australian New Car Assessment Program and RACV chief engineer, Michael Case, says the US test add another dimension to safety information for new car buyers. He says ANCAP will be studying the findings.“The roof crush rating is a useful measure of how the roof will perform in a real rollover,’’ he says.“Rollover is the next area to go in developing tests and rating vehicles.”He says ANCAP will need to look at the IIHS process, particularly how to assess it.The new rating system is based on institute research showing that occupants in rollover crashes can survive better if their off-roaders have stronger roofs.Vehicles rated good must have roofs that are more than twice as strong as minimum federal safety standards require.``We anticipate that our roof strength test will drive improved rollover crash protection the same way that our frontal offset and side impact consumer test programs have led to better protection in these kinds of crashes,'' institute president Adrian Lund, says. The Institute recognises that vehicle roof structures have become stronger over the past few years.Part of the reason is that carmakers have made structural improvements to earn better front and side crash ratings.Strong A and B pillars help prevent intrusion in these types of crashes and also help hold up the roof.``It's not surprising that Volkswagen and Subaru earn good ratings in our new roof test because these carmakers were among the first to ace our front and side tests,'' Lund says.In the United States more than 10,000 people a year are killed in rollovers. When vehicles roll, their roofs often hit the ground with considerable force, deforming and crushing.Stronger roofs crush less, reducing the risk that occupants will be injured by contact with the roof itself.Stronger roofs can also prevent occupants, especially those not wearing seatbelts, from being ejected. In the US, about 25 per cent of deaths in car and van crashes are rollovers but in off-roaders this jumps to 59 per cent. The RACV’s Case says the incidence of rollovers in Australia is lower “but there is still a high chance of death or serious injury”.In the institute's roof strength test, a metal plate is pushed against one side of a roof near the A-pillar.To earn a good rating, the roof must withstand a force of four times the vehicle's weight before reaching 12cm of crush.

In extreme situations, owners have been warned their vehicles may catch fire.Mitsubishi was hit with the biggest safety recall for the three month period. It has written to owners of Pajeros built between 2000 and 2003 to warn them of a potential brake problem. As many as 13,400 vehicles may need to be checked. The company also recalled 4400 of its now-defunct 380 sedan, built between 2006 and 2007, which may have a faulty fuel tank retaining strap. In a severe collision the tank may be dislodged and spill fuel.Mitsubishi is also checking more than 8300 Colts built this year which may have a problem with door windows which may drop and unlock or open the door while the car is being driven.Honda has recalled 11,800 of its 2004-05 Jazz to check whether they have a faulty handbrake, while Mazda needs to look at 1770 of its B4000 utes built between 2005-2006 because the bonnet may open unexpectedly.Subaru has recalled 5380 of its Imprezas, built between 2001 and 2003 because of a faulty rear tailgate which may suddenly drop.Subaru Australia spokesman, Dave Rowley, said many of the recalls were to check for "minor or niggling" faults."We have had no incidents of anyone being injured in Australia and we found only six cars which had the faulty (tailgate strut) connection."Many recalls are done as a pre-emptive measure to avoid possible problems further down the track, " he said.Other potential faults include electrical short circuits, which in extreme circumstances, may start a cabin fire in Landrover Freelander diesels built since 2007. Landrover warns the fault may occur when the vehicle is parked and unattended.Other recalls were to check for short circuits in Fiat's Grande Punto; and a chance that the panoramic glass roof in a small number of Citroen's Picasso could be dislodged.Suzuki has warned of potential fire risk in its 3-door Suzuki Grand Vitara (2006-07) because of a possible cracked fuel pipe, while the 2005-08 Vitara diesel has a remote fire risk in a filter because of a problem with the intercooler outlet pipe insulator.Other problems include faulty rear seat belt D-loop attachments in the current Jaguar XF, and the potential for a loss of steering in Chrysler's 300C built last year because of a problem with rear axle hub nuts which could see the half shaft disengage from the wheel hub.Mercedes Benz wants to look at axles, springs and the park brake in its Sprinter or Vito vans.Jayco has recalled some of its motor homes to check and fix awning and exhaust pipe problems.Of the 1500 motorcycles recalled, safety issues to be fixed include a faulty fuel filler on Kawasaki models, a windshield which may come off Buell bikes if ridden at high speed and a rear view mirror which may fall off on certain Yamaha models. An ACCC spokeswoman said this year's figures were actually less than last year but the number has been steadily rising over the past 20 years. The ACCC says there have been 52 individual recalls this year compared to 171 last year.Full details of the recalls can be found at www.recalls.gov.au

This year the North American International Auto Show did not disappoint with a huge range of cars – some mildly sensible, some downright ridiculous. One of the more ludicrous offerings was Suzukis’ X-HEAD. Looking more like a Tonka truck than a serious off roader, the X-HEAD is said to have more capability than a mere toy. It combines the off road readiness of the Suzuki Jimny and Grand Vitara with the load-carrying capacity of the Suzuki APV van from Japan.Lexus’ LF-A Roadster is one concept not to be chuckled at however. The engineers and designers at Lexus continue to use their groundbreaking LF-A concept as a medium for expressing their ideas about what a high-performance sporting vehicle not only can be but should be. A very sleek road machine.Sit back and enjoy this image gallery from day 1 of the 2008 Detroit Motor Show to see into the future of the motoring world.

In a move that shows the strengthening position of the Indian car market in the world, Suzuki will unveil its A-Star Concept at the Auto Expo in New Delhi next month and build the production version on the sub-continent.The five-door hatchback concept will form the basis of its next global production car and Queensland Suzuki importers think it would do well here.Suzuki Auto Co general manager Keith Carroll said the A-Star would go into production in two to three years.“It will get a name in the next 12 months and we'd love to have it here,” he said. The concept car is powered by a Euro 5-compliant 1-litre aluminium petrol engine with CO2 emissions less than 109g/km. Suzuki Powertrain India produces a 1.3-litre diesel engine, but Suzuki does not plan to use it in the new production car since the new 1-litre petrol engine is environmentally superior. The hatch was developed jointly by Swift designers Maruti Suzuki with Suzuki Motor Corporation in India. Like the slightly bigger Swift; our 2005 Carsguide Car of the Year, it has a distinct European design. The global compact production car will be manufactured in Maruti Suzuki's plant in Manesar near Delhi.Suzuki Motor Corporation invested in India 25 years ago and now has 56 per cent of the market, selling 750,000 cars a year in the country of 1.2 billion people.Maruti is spending $2.2 billion over the next five years in a new car plant to start production next October, a diesel engine manufacturing unit, a new engine series and new models.Suzuki is also planning to build a car plant in Rayong Province in Thailand, which has a free-trade agreement with Australia.Carroll said the plant would build cars for domestic use, but eventually he expected it would export cars to Australia. With no duty on Thai products, he said he would expect Suzuki cars made in Thailand to be excellent value. Other companies such as Honda export cars to Australia from Thailand.Meanwhile, Suzuki will kick off 2008 with a diesel-powered Grand Vitara SUV.It will be only the third diesel in the competitive compact SUV class, after the launch this year of diesel versions of the Kia Sportage and Jeep Patriot and Compass.Powered by a Renault 1.9-litre common-rail turbo engine, it will be married to a five-speed manual gearbox only. The Grand Vitara will receive a “minor” update in June, powered by a choice of 2.4-litre four-cylinder and 3.2-litre V6 petrol engines.

Suzuki Australia is kicking into the donation tin to help fund the fight to save two endangered species, the Tasmanian Devil and the Black Rhinoceros. The Australian arm of the company is promising to donate $30,000 (based on projected sales from every new Grand Vitara and Jimny sold) to breeding and protection programs for both animals.About $10,000 and two vehicles will be donated to the Tasmanian Devil breeding program being run at Healesville Sanctuary, Victoria. The Devils are part of a survival program that hopes to ensure the species can bounce back from an outbreak of Devil Facial Tumour disease.Healesville Sanctuary is one of four mainland zoos now caring for 47 Tasmanian Devils as an “insurance population”.The remaining $20,000 will go to the Black Rhino program based in Tanzania, where conservationist Tony Fitzjohn has established a Black Rhino wildlife reserve.Poaching of Black Rhinos for their horns has cut the breed's population from 65,000 in 1970 to just over 2500.Suzuki Australia general manager Tony Devers says the company is proud to provide support to help the two species.“The Black Rhino and the Tasmanian Devil are renowned as tough creatures, making a link with the legendary tough Grand Vitara SUV an obvious one,” he says.A website has been created by Suzuki Australia savetherhino.com.au which has more information on the projects as well as links to other sites and ways to donate.
