Electric cars are about to change forever as another brand confirms solid-state battery trials in 2027 that put 1000km-plus driving ranges within striking distance.Geely is joining BYD and battery giant CATL in installing futuristic solid-state batteries in vehicles next year, according to Chinese reports. The Chinese behemoth said it would roll out the tech across its brands, which include Geely, Polestar, Volvo, Zeekr and more.Solid-state batteries are often touted as the holy grail of EV cells, they are more energy dense, faster to charge, work better in cold temperatures and are less prone to fire than conventional units. This means brands can install smaller batteries for similar driving range to current EVs, which means they are lighter, more efficient and less of a strain on resources. The reduction in weight and improved packaging that goes with smaller batteries also opens up the possibility of electric performance cars, utes and 4WDs that are all hamstrung by excess weight of current EVs.Makers can also choose to keep the batteries the same size as current units and effectively double the vehicle’s driving range.Driving ranges of more than 1000km have been claimed for the future electric vehicles fitted with these batteries.Geely announced earlier this year that it would start production of its own solid-state batteries after a validation process before installing the new battery type in vehicles for next year. Some reports put Geely’s new cells at 500Wh per kg, which is more than double the average battery. It is also more than double the Golden Brick battery found in some Zeekr 7X models, which have a driving range of close to 500km.The Golden Brick is also immensely fast to charge and suck up 450kW of juice when connected to an appropriate DC charger. This solid-state battery could push the driving range of popular EVs such as the Geely EX5, Volvo EX60 and Zeekr 7X well beyond 1000km.So far no Chinese brand has publicly revealed the results of its solid-state trails, which pours cold water on the idea the batteries will arrive soon and change the game.European makers BMW and Mercedes-Benz have shown off what their prototypes can do.In August 2025, Mercedes-Benz completed a trip from Stuttgart in Germany to Malmo, Sweden without charging. The trip covered 1205km and the prototype vehicle had 130km of range left when it reached its location.Mercedes-Benz Chief Technology Officer Markus Schafer said he wants to have this tech in production vehicles before the end of the decade.“The solid-state battery is a true game-changer for electric mobility. With the successful long-distance drive of the EQS, we show that this technology delivers not only in the lab but also on the road."Our goal is to bring innovations like this into series production by the end of the decade and offer our customers a new level of range and comfort,” said Schafer. The reality is the tech will come, but it will likely be expensive and reserved for high-end cars before trickling down to more mainstream models.Audi engineers previously told CarsGuide they might never be mainstream and will be a niche application because they are too hard to manufacture currently.

BYD’s Ti7 hybrid 4WD has been given a serious update in China. BYD has released a new long-range variant of the Ti7 in China that provides some further enhancements to the new SUV. The Ti7 is a plug-in hybrid large SUV from BYD’s adventure-focused sub-brand FangChengBao and it could be on the cards for Australia. BYD sells the more rugged B5 and B8 FangChengBao models under its Denza sub-brand in Australia. The Ti7 doesn't use a ladder frame chassis like the B5 or B8, but uses a car-based monocoque frame instead. The Ti7 recently launched in the United Kingdom — a fellow right-hand drive — badged the BYD Ti7. The long-range Ti7 is equipped with a 50kWh battery offering up to 315km of pure electric driving range, according to generous CLTC standards. This is a step up from the 36kWh unit that only offered up to 200km. The UK version of the Ti7 has a quoted range of 119km as per more reliable WLTP evaluation, so expect the long-range to have a real-world EV range of under 300km. It is available in two variants, both powered by a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol plug-in hybrid set-up.The single electric motor produces 200kW, while the all-wheel drive dual-motor layout boosts power to 360kW.This differs from the standard Ti7 that has three electric motors, with a total output of 300kW. The car can also now DC fast charge at up to 158kW, meaning a 30 to 80 per cent fill-up takes less than 14 minutes. It measures in at 4999mm long, 1995mm wide, 1865mm high, with a wheelbase 2920mm, but overseas examples are likely to be bigger in line with the standard Ti7. The long-range Ti7 has much of the same interior specification as the standard car, including a 15.6-inch central touchscreen and 26.0-inch head-up display. BYD Australia told CarsGuide earlier this year the Ti7 is not on its radar, but there is strong speculation it will arrive soon. The car is already available in right-hand drive in the UK, which is often a strong indicator it will launch Down Under, similar to many other BYD models. BYD Australia has also trademarked the Ti7 name locally, which is no guarantee it will come here as brands often protect their names so others can't use them. The Ti7 is available with fully-electric or PHEV power in China, but there is potential for both options to launch in Australia. It is unclear whether the Ti7 will fall under BYD or luxury sub-brand Denza when it gets here. The FangChengBao Bao 5 is on sale as the Denza B5 in Australia.China pricing starts from 195,800 (or about $41,500), rising up to 225,800 yuan (or $48,000), but expect it to be above the $50,000 mark when it arrives locally.
New Hyundai Tucson breaks cover

Hyundai has thrown the covers off of its highly-anticipated next-generation Tucson in South Korea, although further local details on the key RAV4 rival are yet to be confirmed. The new model adopts a more radical design language than the outgoing car, with new angular ‘H-shape’ light fittings similar to the incoming i30 Sedan, which was revealed several months ago. Both cars feature the brand’s latest ‘Art of Steel’ design language. The side profile shows a boxy and upright design, moving the Tucson more towards a resurgent off-road trend, with strongly contoured bodywork protruding over the rear wheels while the rear light fittings also consist of strip-style H-shape LEDs.Inside, the Tucson gets a complete overhaul, syncing the model up with the more high-end feel of other recent models like the Palisade large SUV, using a deeper ‘three dimensional’ design theme. It scores a new steering wheel, small digital instrument cluster, large central multimedia touchscreen running the brand’s latest software suite, as well as extensive padded surfaces and ambient interior lighting across the dash. The centre console features an extended asymmetrical armrest piece, with two large bottle holders and space for a wireless phone charger, while a limited array of physical controls appear attached to the base of the central screen.A stalk-mounted shifter also helps to free the console area from controls. The brand also showed two separate models, a standard Tucson and XRT version, which gets a revised grille.Unlike some other models in the Korean brand’s line-up the XRT looks to be available from launch and will feature an array of exclusive trim pieces to enhance its “outdoor sensibilities”.The Korean market at least will have access to a new array of colours including white, grey in matte or metallic, orange matte and copper pearl.Meanwhile the interior will be available in black, grey two-tone, black and beige two tone and a black and brown two-tone.The new fifth-generation Tucson has expanded in dimensions, now 4700mm long, 1905mm wide and 1685mm tall, with the wheelbase expanded by 30mm and total width expanding by 40mm for what Hyundai claims is “best-in-class” interior space. While no further information about the key new mid-size SUV was offered, it is expected to follow in the footsteps of other recent Hyundai models. This means by the time it gets to Australia, it will be offered only as a hybrid, using a familiar 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine and gearbox-mounted electric motor, as is used by the larger Santa Fe.The fifth-generation Tucson is due in Australia in 2027, with its official global debut slated to happen in America before the end of this year. The current Tucson has been a strong-seller for Hyundai, and currently ranks in second place amongst combustion and hybrid mid-size SUVs amassing 12,724 units so far this year. It remains behind the dominant Toyota RAV4 (21,115 units), but ahead of the Mitsubishi Outlander (12,189 units), Mazda CX-5 (12,378 units), and the related Kia Sportage (11,187 units). The mid-size SUV segment is in a state of flux, however, as electric options begin to storm the charts. The Tucson is being outranked, for example, by BYD’s Sealion 7 (15,064 units), and the best-selling Tesla Model Y (25,040 units).Hyundai’s fully electric Tucson alternative, the Elexio, made its debut on the charts last month with a respectable 692 units for July, although the brands march toward electric and hybrid only will need to continue if it plans to evade fines under the Australian Government’s new vehicle efficiency standards (NVES).Expect to learn more about the fifth-generation Tucson closer to its 2027 arrival in Australia.

Overnight reports out of Japan are pointing to a new-generation Mazda CX-30 arriving in 2030, which would make the current, first-generation model 11 years old on replacement.According to Chugoku Shimbun Mazda plans to launch the new CX-30 by fiscal year 2030 (the Japanese financial year runs from April 1 to March 31 the following year) with the aim of retaining its position as the brand’s second best-selling model globally, behind the CX-5.Introduced in Europe in late 2019 and arriving in Australia early the following year, the Mazda 3-based compact CX-30 was developed to fill the gap between the small CX-3 and medium CX-5 in Mazda’s now extensive SUV line-up.Mazda President and CEO Katsuhiro Moro told the Hiroshima-based outlet the company is aiming to strengthen the CX-30’s product appeal, noting that to reduce costs “we will incorporate the methods used in the new CX-5 into the next-generation CX-30".In 2025, Mazda sold just over 200,000 examples of the CX-30 worldwide, putting it in a clear second spot behind the CX-5 at around 350,000 units. It’s worth noting Mazda’s Chief Financial Officer Jeff Guyton told CarsGuide at the 2025 Tokyo motor show the brand’s next-generation “smaller architecture cars” were the next priority after the brand finishes its hybrid development.By 2027 Mazda plans to add its next-generation ‘Skyactiv-Z’ internal combustion engine and proprietary hybrid system to the recently renewed CX-5, with two more hybrid models set to follow soon after.Currently produced in Mazda’s main Ujina plant in Hiroshima City, the CX-30 is also produced in Hofu City, as well as in Mexico, Thailand and China with CKD (Completely Knocked Down) assembly in Malaysia and Indonesia.Early Australian CX-30 production came out of Thailand but local examples have been Japan-built since mid-2020 and it’s likely the new model, with a likely hybrid powertrain option, will follow suit.

GAC has revealed a new and more affordable variant of its Emzoom small SUV.The brand announced the new entry-level Emzoom Premium is available from just $22,990, drive-away, undercutting the Tiggo 4 Urban ($23,990) and Haval Jolion Premium ($26,990), whilst also being the same price as the MG ZS Vibe ($22,990), all prices drive-away.The new variant is $3000 more affordable than the now-top-spec Emzoom Luxury, which continues to be priced at $26,990, drive-away.Unlike the Tiggo 4, Jolion and MG ZS however, all of which have pricier but desirable hybrid variants, the Emzoom is only available with combustion power. This consists of a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine for both trim levels. It produces 125kW/270Nm and is paired to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission driving the front wheels. The new base Premium grade forgoes the Luxury grade’s opening panoramic sunroof, power tailgate, 360-degree parking camera and blind spot view system, downgrades the number of parking sensors and downsizes the 18-inch wheels to 17s.It also loses the Luxury grade’s auto-folding wing mirrors, electric rear door handles, ambient interior lighting, ventilation and power adjust for the driver’s seat, the centre armrest and USB port for rear passengers and even the pre-tensioners for the seat belts. However, GAC points out the Emzoom maintains its large 14.6-inch multimedia touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto alongside the main suite of active safety items, as well as being available with a competitive seven-year, unlimited kilometre warranty.GAC says the new Premium variant will hit dealerships in September.A relatively new challenger to the segment-dominating Chery Tiggo 4, the Emzoom is also currently GAC’s best-selling car, ahead of the Aion V electric mid-sizer, however it plays in one of the most congested parts of the Australian new car market.GAC also offers the budget-focused Aion UT electric hatch (from $31,990) which competes in the entry part of the electric market alongside the BYD Dolphin and just-launched Geely EX2.While it is still in its infancy in Australia, GAC has a long way to go to challenge its more successful contemporaries, with Geely in particular surging ahead in the sales charts. However, it has managed to already surpass Leapmotor which, by comparison, has struggled for traction against a crowd of new brands.GAC has promised a larger hybrid SUV will arrive in 2027, and a ute is also high on its list of priorities as it boldly aims for a top-10 position in our market by 2028.

Hyundai began production of its newest electric car, the Ioniq 3, at its Türkiye plant during the week, with a promising price tag already attached to the car in the UK.Order books opened for the 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 3 in the UK with a starting price of £22,245, which directly converts to A$42,400.While that’s not confirmation we can expect the Ioniq 3’s price to land around $40,000 on arrival in Australia, it does show Hyundai might be able to compete with small electric SUVs from China.Hyundai already sells a 'Light' SUV, the Inster, at around the $40,000 mark, so expect the bigger Ioniq 3 (which comes in at 4155mm long, 1800mm wide and 1505mm tall) to sit above that. While the Hyundai Ioniq 3 likely won’t be able to undercut small electric SUVs (which it’s smaller than) like the BYD Atto 2 (from $31,990), GWM Ora 5 (from $33,990) or Jaecoo J5 (from $36,990), Hyundai’s positioning as a more premium offering should help it entice buyers away. While it’s not set to launch here until the first half of 2027, the Ioniq 3 is also being built in Hyundai’s Türkiye factory, so importing the car from Europe will bring its own costs. However, Hyundai will be keen to make the car as competitive as possible through pricing or spec to bolster its electric car sales.Five variants of the Ioniq 3 have been confirmed for the UK with two battery-size and drivetrain set-ups.The version with a “projected WLTP range” of 344km thanks to a 42.2kWh battery and 108kW output is dubbed Standard Range, while a Long Range version with an anticipated range of 496km but lower output of 100kW is also locked in.The former is only available in the base model and brings the aforementioned £22,245 price with it, while the other drivetrain is available in the base trim as well as three higher grades. An N Line Evo variant tops the line-up at £31,945 (A$60,900).

Twelve months after the local market introduction of its Terramar mid-size SUV, Cupra has added two new limited Tribe Edition versions to the five-seater’s flagship VZ grade.Offered in two “carefully curated” design themes, underpinned by green or black, just 10 examples of the Terramar VZ Tribe Edition Green will be available with 35 VZ Tribe Edition Blacks on offer, both focused on sustainability through the use of repurposed materials.Computerised 3D knitting technology has produced the car’s seat upholstery, “100 percent recycled materials” are used in the seat centres and around 30 per cent of interior plastics incorporate recycled material.Even the Sulfur Green paint applied to multiple internal elements is claimed to be a ‘bio-based’ formulation and the alloy wheels consist of up to 20 per cent recycled material. The Tribe Editions are based on the top-spec Terramar VZ, which means they’re powered by a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine sending 195kW/400Nm to all four wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and part-time all-wheel drive system. Adaptive damper suspension is also onboard.Car-spotters should look out for an exclusive Manganese Matte Green finish, dark chrome exterior detailing and unique 20-inch alloy rims (incorporating Sulfur Green highlights) on the Terramar VZ Tribe Edition Green. The VZ Tribe Edition Black is finished in Midnight Black with black 20-inch ‘Gravity’ alloy wheels fitted.Interior highlights on both versions include the 3D knitted fabric seats and sulfur green and dark chrome interior highlights. The standard features list for these limited editions has also been upgraded to include the normally optional panoramic sunroof.Introducing the cars, Cupra Australia Head of Product Jeff Shafer said, “These editions combine the performance and dynamic capability of the Terramar VZ with carefully curated design elements that allow customers to express even more individuality. “Every detail has been selected to create a vehicle that feels unique while remaining unmistakably Cupra,” he said. The Cupra Terramar VZ Tribe Editions are available to order now with customer deliveries scheduled to begin this October.

Mazda’s slow roll out of its long-awaited hybrid technology is hurting its CX-5 sales, according to reports. The Japanese giant launched the CX-5, its biggest selling model in two of its largest markets - the US and Australia, this year.Sales have not lived up to the hype so far, with the SUV launching with just petrol power and the hybrid alternative not arriving until late 2027 in the US and likely 2028 in Australia. In the US, sales of the CX-5 have dipped 23 per cent since the model went on sale, according to Nikkei Asia.Mazda US is blaming insufficient stock for the sales blip, but sales of the similar-sized hybrid CX-50 — which uses Toyota's hybrid tech — have skyrocketed during the same period, according to reports.July was the first full month of sales of the new CX-5 in Australia, with sales flat compared to the same month in 2025.This might also be the result of stock not flowing freely just yet, but buyers could also be running to snatch up hybrid and plug-in hybrid alternatives.Sales of hybrid SUVs are up about 13 per cent this year, and plug-in hybrids have jumped almost 200 per cent.Petrol SUV registrations have shed a quarter of sales compared to 2025… read into that what you will.Mazda has always been open about the timing of its new hybrid technology and decided against installing someone else’s petrol-electric set-up in favour of developing its own in-house unit for the CX-5.At the 2025 Tokyo motor show, Mazda’s Managing Executive Officer in charge of Vehicle Development, Product Development, Design and Cost Innovation Naohito Saga said there were no technical issues developing the new hybrid tech but the delay was due to regulatory reasons both within Mazda and global markets.“We need a certain period of development timing, that is why,” said Saga through a translator.“Basically CX-5 will be introduced in Europe and US, so those stringent regulations we need to comply with."Mazda is also aiming to make the new CX-5 Hybrid sweeter to drive than any Toyota.“ Different characteristics . Because what we aim for is the Mazda driving feeling, which is the good feeling when you drive. That is what we are aiming for, so it will be different,” said Saga. When the hybrid does arrive it should be the pick of the litter, with performance to surpass the now defunct turbocharged 2.5-litre petrol engine of the previous generation.Mazda Australia won’t just offer the hybrid in the priciest versions, but will have a broad offering across its grades, according to local boss Vinesh Bhindi.

GWM Australia has released pricing and detailed specifications for new 3.0-litre turbo-diesel powered versions of its Cannon Alpha dual cab ute and three-row Tank 500 SUV.And the Chinese brand is clearly determined to upset the established order amongst competitors for both models with aggressive price positioning and a value-focused list of included features accompanying their enhanced powertrain performance.Close to two years ago the petrol-electric BYD Shark 6 offered an instantly popular hybrid ute alternative and Chery’s soon-to-arrive Stockman will offer diesel-electric hybrid power. But while those newcomers have been thinking outside the box, GWM has stayed squarely within it, launching its all-new 170kW/620Nm 3.0-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine as a shot across the bows of the market-leading Ford Ranger, Toyota HiLux and Isuzu D-Max.In a launch statement, GWM said, “The message is simple: Australians still want diesel power, and GWM is giving them more of what they want, for less.“Both models will be priced thousands of dollars below comparable competitors, delivering a level of performance, specification and value designed to challenge the established market leaders,” it said. And it’s worth noting GWM is running with an introductory offer of a $2000 drive-away cash bonus or $2000 fuel card on these models until October 30, 2026.GWM is keen to highlight local development work to optimise the new engine’s performance, led by the brand’s Lead Product Dynamics and Integration Manager, Rob Trubiani. In fact, GWM said Australian and Chinese engineering teams have put the vehicles through “an extensive development program focused on optimising performance, refinement and durability for Australian drivers, including ride and handling, engine and transmission calibration, towing performance and software.”The 3.0-litre four produces 26 per cent more power (+35kW) and 29 per cent more torque (+140Nm) than the 2.4-litre turbo-diesel in supersedes. But despite the higher outputs, GWM is claiming combined cycle fuel efficiency of 7.3L/100km for the Cannon Alpha (substantially lower than the 2.4L’s 8.9L/100km) and 7.1L/100km for the Tank 500.Braked trailer towing capacity is 3500kg for both models (up from 3000kg for the Tank 500) Confirming the pricing and spec details, GWM Australia Chief Operating Officer John Kett said, “When you look at the Cannon Alpha and Tank 500 against the established volume players in their respective segments, the difference is clear. “We’re offering a higher level of standard specification, more performance and more technology, while asking customers to pay thousands of dollars less.“That is a proposition we believe Australian customers will find very compelling,” he said.Coffee OS (intelligent cockpit system)14.6-inch central touchscreen (up from 12.3-inch)12.3-inch colour digital instrument clusterWireless Apple CarPlay and Android AutoGWM App (vehicle status and selected functions controlled via smartphone)Full ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) suite18-inch alloy wheelsSide stepsRoof railsAuto LED headlights with DRL + electric levellingLED tail-lightsFront grille – chromePower fold exterior mirrorsKeyless entryRear privacy glassOne piece tailgateSpray on tub linerFull-size spare (steel)Synthetic leather trimPower front seatsDual-zone climate controlSix-speaker audioAdaptive cruise controlSeven airbagsBlack styling treatmentFront diff lockPanoramic sunroofFull-size alloy spare60/40 split tailgateNappa leather accented trimHeated and cooled front seats (with massage)Head-up display10-speaker audioFront and rear diff locksLow-range transfer caseAll-terrain mode selection18-inch alloy wheelsElectric sunroofSynthetic leather trimPower front seatsDual-zone climate controlAmbient lighting (seven-colour)Eight-speaker audioBlack styling treatmentNappa leather accented trimHeated and cooled front seats (with massage)Head-up displayAmbient lighting (64-colour)Heated steering wheel12-speaker audioActive noise cancellingPre-orders for the GWM Cannon Alpha and Tank 500 3.0-litre turbo-diesel models are open now with cars scheduled to arrive in dealerships from mid-September.

Land Rover’s Defender Dakar is a road-legal version of its hardcore 2026 Dakar Rally racing Defender Octa complete with a “flight mode” to ensure perfect landings after doing jumps. In another case of completely-unnecessary-but-we-want-it-desperately-anyway, Land Rover is bringing us a road-going - or anywhere-going - version of its Dakar Rally D7X-R racing SUV.The Defender Octa is an already bonkers high-performance off-road beast with its 4.4-litre V8 engine (the same found in BMW’s M5) making 367kW and 750Nm, outstanding four-wheel drive capability combined with mind boggling on-road dynamics, but the Defender Dakar goes more berserk.“We’ve pushed our engineers to go further than they’ve ever gone before,” Defender Managing Director Mark Cameron said. “First, we evolved Defender OCTA into D7X‑R and then we asked: could we make the Dakar Rally‑winning D7X‑R road legal? The result is the Defender Dakar.”The Defender Dakar keeps the same V8 engine, transmission and body architecture as the D7X-R and adds a 35-inch all-terrain tyre package with unique 20-inch forged wheels. The ride height is lifted with coil suspension and Bilstein advanced dampers and the track is widened. There’s new modes for sand dunes and gravel, plus there’s flight mode.Flight mode is a sophisticated system that detects the moment the Defender Dakar becomes airborne over hilly terrain. Then, instead of letting the wheels spin freely in mid-air, which will send an enormous amount of shock force through the transmission upon landing, the torque to the wheels is calculated and controlled to ensure a smooth touchdown. Holding the driver and co-pilot snugly in place are race seats with an optional four point harness. The Defender Dakar is a 2+2 seater with storage for race helmets and a purpose-built spare wheel mount inside the cargo area along with air-compressor. The Defender Dakar comes with the same Dakar Sand and Yanbu Turquoise colour scheme as worn by the D7X-R, with a range of other hues to pick from.Adding to the tough looks is a fixed metal roof with light pods, carbon fibre raised air intakes, flared wheel arches with exposed rivets, along with metal front under shield and underbody protection. The Defender Dakar made its international debut at the Monterey week in the United States over the weekend with full specifications to be announced at the 2027 Dakar Rally in Saudi Arabia.Land Rover Australia has confirmed to CarsGuide the Defender Dakar will be landing locally and said the price and the number of units being made available will be announced in January 2027. As a guide, the Defender Octa Black lists ofr $313,800 or about $10,000 more than the regular Octa. Buyers can expect the Defender Dakar to sit above the Octa Black in the range when the model arrives in Australia.
