After an extended teaser campaign, GWM has fully detailed its Tank 700 Hi4-Z off-roader in its Chinese home market.The new version of GWM’s aggressively styled off-roader is notable for its new hybrid system, which is distinct from the Hi4-T system previously sold on existing versions of the Tank 700. A 2.0-litre turbo-petrol version of it is currently used by GWM in the Cannon Alpha in Australia. The Hi4-T system has an electric motor in the gearbox, and sends drive to the wheels via traditional mechanical links, theoretically maintaining hardcore off-road capability but limiting the available space for a battery.Instead, the new Hi4-Z system used in the new Tank 700 is closer in its design to BYD’s plug-in hybrid system used on the Denza B5, in that it replaces a mechanical link to the rear axle with an independent rear electric motor, using the space between the frame rails for a larger battery.As a result, the Tank 700 Hi4-Z has a massive 59kWh battery pack, which grants it a WLTC-rated electric driving range of 190km. This is boosted by a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine providing 185kW, maintaining a mechanical connection only to the front wheels.Interestingly, the new Tank 700 also scores an overhauled interior compared to the Hi4-T V6 version, featuring a larger multimedia screen, a new two-tone colour scheme and a redesigned centre console with fresh toggle-style switchgear, sinking cupholder designs and more buttons than before.It also features a drop-down entertainment screen for rear passengers, and aggressive new styling highlights, like a (fake) bonnet scoop and a rear spoiler. In China the 700 Hi4-Z is also available in a new array of colour schemes and features a LiDAR housing on top of its windscreen.While this new 2.0-litre turbocharged Hi4-Z option adds yet another appealing feature to the Tank 700 range, GWM’s Australian division has hinted in the past that it is more likely our market will receive the next-generation version of the Tank 700.This is because the versions which exist now don’t quite have the right features the brand is looking for in its Australian range. CarsGuide understands the 3.0-litre V6 twin-turbo Hi4-T version won’t be made available in a right-hand-drive configuration, and this Hi4-Z version isn’t as sought after by the Australian division due to its compromised towing and off-road capabilities.The Hi4-Z version is only capable of towing 2500kg, while the Cannon Alpha Hi4-T already sold here is certified to tow up to the industry standard 3500kg.Regardless, GWM’s Australian division has shown interest in bringing the Tank 700 in as a range-topping offering at some point in the future, importing left-hand-drive examples to be tested locally in 2025, and hinting that a future version could be offered with the brand’s upcoming 4.0-litre V8 in a plug-in hybrid set-up.However, the brand has also warned it wouldn’t be a bargain offering either, estimating starting prices well in excess of $100,000.At 5105mm long, 2061mm wide and 1985mm tall, the chunky modern-military-style 4x4 is more Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series or Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen rival than the sub-five-metre Denza B5 and Toyota Prado.The Tank 700 Hi4-Z is part of a new model blitz by GWM as it continues to fight for market share in China and across the world. The brand has also recently unveiled plans to build its Ora 5 electric crossover in both right-hand-drive and in hybrid form, and has also recently unveiled its Wey V9X luxury flagship SUV.Locally, the brand has plans to expand on its offering of Ora models to better compete in the EV space, as well as launch the Wey brand in the second half of 2026.Stay tuned for more on GWM’s local plans as the brand aims to hold its hard-fought top-ten position in Australia this year, against an aggressive BYD and Chery.

A tech website has accidentally leaked details of an upcoming SUV from EV maker Rivian, set to be globally revealed a day later.The 2026 Rivian R2, an SUV cousin to the Rivian R1S SUV and R1T pick-up, was accidentally unveiled by Ars Technica in what appears to be a scheduling error.Vitally, this model is the best chance yet that Rivian has for an Australian launch thanks to its signalled plans for the UK.While it’s since been unpublished, the page was captured and published to reddit, where the pricing has been confirmed as starting at US$57,990 (A$81,300).The first variants to launch will be the R2 Performance, with 530km of electric range and a 489kW/825Nm dual-motor all-wheel-drive system.Power comes from an 87.9kWh battery pack, which it will share with a less powerful R2 Premium variant coming later in the year. That one will come in at US$53,990 (A$75,600).Later down the track, there will be an R2 Standard with a smaller battery and likely less power, though details of that have not been revealed in the leaked information.The Rivian R2 is essentially set to rival the Tesla Model Y, though there are more rivals in that category available in Australia like the Zeekr 7X, BYD Sealion 7 and Kia EV5.While Rivian doesn’t have a presence in Australia, the R2 is set to be the first Rivian to be available outside North America, meaning if any model is going to make its way Down Under from the US brand, it’s this one.This comes after the brand confirmed the R2 will be available in right-hand drive for buyers in the UK, opening the door for RHD sales here in Australia, even though it’s unconfirmed.

Mitsubishi Australia has confirmed local pricing for the “significantly updated” Outlander plug-in hybrid (PHEV), launching immediately.The 2026 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV update, which primarily consists of a small battery capacity increase and more power, sees prices rise as much as $3000 for one variant.Now starting from $58,990 before on-road costs, the base ES now costs $1700 more, while the top-spec Exceed Tourer is now $74,490, an increase of $2700.The mid-size family SUV now comes with a 22.7kWh lithium-ion battery pack, up from 20kWh, which increases its NEDC electric-only range from 84km to 103km. Under more widely used (and more accurate) WLTP testing, Mitsubishi claims its EV range is 86km.Claimed fuel consumption under NEDC testing drops from 1.5L/100km to 1.2L/100km, though the testing undertaken to achieve this would have seen full EV mode used for much of the driven distance.Mitsubishi also claims power output for the drivetrain system, which consists of a 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine and two electric motors driving all four wheels, is 221kW - this is up significantly over the previous 185kW.While the engine and motors' individual peak outputs are unchanged, the new system allows the trio to reach a collective peak power at a higher point. Mitsubishi doesn't quote a total torque output.Four drive modes, Normal, Charge, Save, and EV, also allow the driver to decide how much the Outlander is relying on the electric elements of its drivetrain.Australian-specific ride and handling changes have been made for the update, including a set of recalibrated shock absorbers at the front and rear, and an anti-roll bar with a smaller diameter. Power steering mapping has also been adjusted to “improve on-centre feel and linear turning response”.Cabin noise is reportedly helped by a new steel bonnet and front fenders, plus specific new Bridgestone tyres aim to lower road noise.Aerodynamics have been improved by some styling changes in line with the combustion variants, Mitsubishi says, while lighting has changed with the addition of rear LED lamps.Also key to the update is the changing of seating arrangements. The Zeekr 7X has been given some sharp new design elements as part of a special edition upgrade for the premium electric mid-size SUV in Australia. The ‘Black Special Edition’ 7X starts from $75,900 (before on-road costs), which is a $3000 increase on the most expensive Performance all-wheel drive variant.The car gets some major exterior changes, including a gloss black body paint, differing from the Performance grade's ‘Onyx’ black as well as green, blue, grey and white body colour options. The gloss black finish continues elsewhere on the car, including front and rear lower bumpers, lower door exterior trims finished and roof rails. It rides on 20-inch alloy wheels and gets a 7X black badge on the rear of the car. On the inside, there is Black Nappa leather interior trim, contrasting the white trim usually found on the top-grade model. Zeekr has introduced this car off the back of sustained demand from buyers for a darker and more bold overall design on the 7X.Performance-wise, the car keeps the same figures as the range-topping 7X, which has 475kW and 710Nm, with the 0-100km/h sprint taking 3.8 seconds. The 7X has had a blistering start to its life in Australia with more than 1000 sales in 2026, catapulting it one of the best selling EVs in the country. It also earned the 2026 CarsGuide Car of the Year Best Medium SUV under $60K, up against regular favourites such as the Toyota RAV4. Despite its solid sales so far, its key rival the Tesla Model Y has sold more than 4000 units in 2026This new range-topping 7X, however, is still cheaper than the comparable Model Y, which starts from $89,400, before on-roads. MG has released official images and basic specifications for its pure-electric MG4X compact SUV, including the new model’s ‘liquid-solid state’ battery system.Underpinned by the same ‘Modular Scalable Platform’ and featuring the same ‘E3’ electronic architecture as the upcoming, second-gen version of its MG4 sibling, the MG4X SUV shares the hatch’s 2750mm wheelbase but its crossover-style design looks to add additional length, width and height.Due to ramp up to full production in the second quarter of this year, it also shares what MG positions as “the world’s first mass-produced semi-solid-state” battery.The battery, which was unveiled at last year’s Chengdu Auto Show, is a 53.95kWh semi-solid manganese-based lithium-ion unit which delivers a claimed 530km range in the MG4 to the more lenient CLTC test protocol. Claimed 30-80 per cent charge time is 21 minutes.Broadly similar in looks to the MG4 hatch, the MG4X brings a unique front fascia treatment with reshaped headlights, a full-width DRL strip and broad two-tier grille below the bumper.A generous glasshouse sits above smoothly sculpted flanks with a rear roof spoiler topping a tailgate that sprouts a pronounced deck in the centre section.While no interior pics have been released, it’s safe to assume the MG4X will feature a version of the MG4’s ‘smart cockpit’ co-developed with global smart device specialist Oppo.In the case of the MG4 hatch, a digital instrument cluster is paired with a central multimedia screen ranging up to a 15.6-inch display, powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 chip.A ‘Hand-Car Interconnection’ system is designed to establish a smooth, lag-free smartphone to vehicle connection with high-speed ‘Navigate on Pilot’ and automated parking functions also onboard.Domestic pricing for the MG4X is yet to be confirmed, but the semi-solid-state battery Anxin Edition version of the new MG4 hatch is positioned at ¥102,800 which equates to around A$20,818 on a direct currency conversion.Add import and distribution costs as well as extra standard specification likely for the Australian market and a before on-roads cost in the mid-$30K bracket is more likely. That would position the car below the MG S5 (from $40,490, drive-away) and in line with the BYD Atto 2 (from $31,990, before on-road costs), Chery E5 (From $36,990, BOC) and recently released Leapmotor B10 (from $38,990, drive-away).When contacted for comment on the MG4X’s potential for local sale an MG Motor Australia spokesperson told CarsGuide, "We do not speculate or comment on future models or product details. "We are always evaluating updates across our line up to ensure we offer the best possible experience for customers and will provide further information once future models are formally confirmed," they said.But with the second-gen MG4 hatch (dubbed the MG4 Urban) due here within the next few months it’s highly likely the MG4X will join it in local showrooms before the end of the year.

A new small SUV is on the way to fill the smaller space below the likes of the Toyota LandCruiser and Nissan Patrol, rivalling the popular Suzuki Jimny.The 2027 Renault Bridger concept has been revealed as a rugged small SUV set for production in 2027, with combustion, hybrid and electric versions on the cards.Not a lot has been confirmed about the small SUV, but its design and rough size seem to be pretty close to locked in, with Renault confirming the Bridger will come in at less than 4.0 metres long.Packaging looks set to maximise interior convenience, with 200mm of knee room and 400 litres of boot space both touted as strong figures for the category.Set to be produced in India in 2027, Renault says there will be a “gradual roll-out to other international markets.”Built on the Renault Group modular platform, or or 'RGMP small' to give it its new name, the Bridger is one of 12 new models Renault plans to launch in the next four years before 2030.Renault plans to increase its electrification across its line-up, using its E-Tech hybrid system, as well as building its larger cars on its RGEV medium 2.0 electric platform.To that end, Renault has also revealed its R-Space Lab concept, which it claims “redefines the in-car experience” by exploring new ways to lay out and fit out the interior.The front passenger seat can, for example, slide back to the second row, or the individual rear seats have their own backrests. Seats can be folded or moved to create space for cargo or people as needed.As Australia is a relatively small part of Renault’s global sales footprint, it’s unclear how many of the brand’s new models will make it Down Under in the next few years.Given the popularity of of the Suzuki Jimny and the fact Renault has already launched the seemingly niche Dacia Duster here under its own badge, the Bridger certainly isn’t off the cards.The biggest snag so far? No Indian-built Renaults have been offered for sale in Australia.

Toyota’s undisputed hybrid dominance continued in the past year but with new emissions laws closing in, more brands are vying for a slice of the fuel-sipping hybrid market.The biggest success story so far appears to be Hyundai, which has moved to electrify some of its top-selling nameplates. The Korean juggernaut now ranks second in Australia for total hybrid sales, amassing 28,819 hybrids registered in 2025.While this still trails Toyota’s total of 116,635 hybrid units by a significant margin, it’s a reasonably rapid rise for Hyundai, which has managed to double its hybrid tally year-on-year.This is thanks to the roll-out of key hybrid variants for its most popular nameplates, like the Kona small SUV (now 46 per cent hybrid by sales), Tucson mid-sizer (52 per cent hybrid), the Santa Fe, which launched as a hybrid (hence its whopping 82 per cent hybrid sales mix), and the recently-launched Palisade hybrid, which made up 32 per cent of the large SUV’s sales (this figure combines the previous model as well).Hyundai is perhaps a victim of its own mainstream success in that its total for 2025 was still only 37 per cent hybrid, 60 per cent combustion, and just two per cent electric. The brand therefore still managed to attract a penalty under Australia’s tough New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES), despite its hybrid growth.Hyundai’s hybrid strategy has managed to outfox its traditional Japanese rivals Honda and Nissan thanks to the widespread availability and affordability of its hybrid options.The Kona, for example, is available as a hybrid in base form, priced at $36,950 before on-road costs, while the most affordable Nissan Qashqai e-Power ST-L is priced at $45,640 (before on-roads), and the cheapest Honda ZR-V hybrid is priced at $54,900 (drive-away).The same can be said across the range, with the Santa Fe a plugless hybrid success when measured against its Kia Sorento sibling, which was previously only available as a hybrid in top-spec GT-Line form. Kia has now expanded its hybrid offering to include the base S at $59,630 before on-roads. In comparison, the base Santa Fe Hybrid can be had from $57,650.However, there are storm cells on the horizon for Hyundai. Not only does its two per cent EV volume mean the more affordable Chinese-built Elexio mid-size SUV must help out on the sales front in 2026, but the next brand down for hybrid sales, BYD, has rapidly caught up despite fielding only two hybrid (albeit, plug-in hybrid) offerings.The Shark 6 ute is undeniably one of the biggest success stories of 2025, shifting 18,073 units, but the mid-sized Sealion 6 is also a force to be reckoned with, achieving 9055 registrations in the same period.In total, these two plug-ins bring BYD’s tally to 27,128 units, just shy of Hyundai’s total for the year, and by far leading the charts for plug-in hybrids specifically.In addition, the market-leading Toyota will put pressure on Hyundai’s line-up with the introduction of its next-generation RAV4 and its plug-in hybrid variants imminently. Toyota sold 51,869 units of just the RAV4 hybrid in 2025.The Japanese giant has also transitioned most of its passenger car and non 4x4 line-up to hybrid only, with a strong proportion of Corolla Cross, Corolla, and Camry making up its yearly total.Meanwhile Kia, whose hybrid total for 2025 came to 9401 units, is doubling down by not only adding additional hybrid variants of the Sorento, but it will soon launch a more heavily hybridised next-generation Seltos.Kia’s key advantage over its sibling is its relative dominance in the EV space, with its line-up of the EV3, EV5, EV6, EV9 and outgoing Niro accounting for 8131 units in 2025, eclipsing its hybrid total, accounting for 10 per cent of its total sales, and putting it firmly in the positive column for NVES credits which will pay dividends in the coming years.

V8 engines in Australia have been on the decline with increasingly stringent emissions requirements and changes in production and demand.It has seen the recent departure of V8 favourites such as the 4.5-litre twin-turbo diesel found in the Toyota LandCruiser.The options are continuing to fade with the next-generation Nissan Patrol ditching its 5.6-litre diesel V8, in favour of a twin-turbo six-cylinder set-up.For those wondering though, here are all the new cars still on sale in 2026 with a V8 engine. Aston Martin Aston Martin uses the Mercedes-AMG tuned 4.0-litre twin-turbo petrol V8 across most of its range. This includes the Vantage coupe and convertible models, producing 489kW and 800Nm. The engine is also found in the DB12, which is a V8-exclusive model. Previous DB generations have had the 5.9-litre V12, such as the DB9 and DB11.The DB12’s V8 produces slightly more power than the Vantage at 500kW, and has the same 800Nm.Aston Martin’s DBX SUV is the other model to house a V8 engine, which produces 405kW and 700Nm. The juiced up DBX 707 has 520kW and 700Nm. Audi Audi has a petrol V8 in four models, across both its sedan and SUV range. The top-spec limited edition RS6 Avant GT is the most expensive Audi model on sale in Australia, starting from nearly $400,000 (before on-road costs), although even the regular RS6 is a smidge over $250,000.Its 4.0-litre V8 engine produces 463kW and 850Nm, which is the same as in the related RS7.The standard versions of the SQ7 and SQ8 SUVs have lesser power outputs at 441kW/800Nm, while the range-topping RSQ8 Performance produces 471kW/850Nm. FordFord has three V8 models on sale for its Mustang GT sports car, which all employ 5.0-litre unit, producing up to 347kW and 550Nm. Bentley The Flying Spur and Continental GT luxury grand tourers both have V8 power, with the Continental GT, a V8-exclusive. Bentley’s VW-group sourced 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 has been given some hybrid assistance in the top-end version of the Continental GT, boosting performance to 575kW and 1000Nm.The ultra high-end Bentayga SUV meanwhile shares its powerplant with the aforementioned Audi models, a 4.0-litre twin-turbo without plug-in assistance producing 478kW/850Nm.BMWBMW has one V8 petrol engine which features in five models on sale in Australia. The M5 adds a plug-in hybrid set-up to its V8, producing 535kW and 1000Nm. The M8 uses the same 4.4-litre engine, but it does not have an electrification, so it 'only' produces 460kW and 750Nm. This V8 is also found in several performance-oriented SUVs from BMW’s line-up, such as the X5, X6 and X7, as well as the full-size XM, which also employs a plug-in hybrid set-up. It was recently reported BMW has plans to continue its production of V8 engines in the carmaker’s Hams Hall facility in the United Kingdom, with North American demand continuing to be strong despite emissions laws closing in around the world. Mercedes-Benz The 4.0-litre V8 engine continues to be available on several Mercedes-Benz models, such as its luxury limousine S-Class and Maybach. It gets a plug-in hybrid twist on the ballistic GT63 SE, taking figures to a staggering 620kW and 1400Nm. The petrol-only GT63 has the same 4.0-litre engine, producing up to 450kW and 800Nm.Mercedes’ latest generation C63 sedan only features a twin-turbo hybrid 2.0-litre four-cylinder set-up, which has proved an unpopular swap compared to the previous V8. Like BMW, Mercedes also employs its V8 across high-end variants in its SUV range. Land Rover Land Rover installs two V8 engines, which feature as part of its Defender and Range Rover line-ups. The biggest V8 on offer is a 5.0-litre example, producing up to 368kW and 610Nm in the top-spec Defender model. There is also a 4.4-litre hybrid unit found on many of the P-Series and Sport Range Rover variants, with a maximum of 467kW and 750Nm. Lamborghini Lamborghini has one V8 engine, which is available on its Temerario coupe and its Urus SUV. It is a 4.0-litre example, producing up to 588kW and 950Nm. Ferrari Ferrari offers a 3.9-litre twin-turbo V8 engine on its Roma and Roma Spider two-door sports cars. GWM has pulled the covers off its flagship luxury SUV after an extended teaser campaign.The new over 5.0-metre long three-row SUV will live under GWM’s Wey luxury brand, which is set to debut in Australia in the second half of 2026.It enters a suddenly extremely competitive flagship Chinese SUV space, which has also seen the recent reveals of the BYD Great Tang the, Zeekr 8X and 9X, and the IM LS8 and LS9 from MG’s luxury arm.The V9X is a plug-in hybrid which pairs a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine producing 175kW with dual electric motors in the brand’s signature 'Hi4' set-up, as well as relatively large battery options allowing a fully-electric driving range of either 240km or 363km according to the more lenient CLTC standards.It uses an 800-volt electrical architecture, becoming more common on Chinese plug-in hybrids, targeting 200km of range added in five minutes on a DC charger. According to data filed in China it can sprint from 0-100km/h in 4.4 seconds, which is rapid for an SUV which measures 5299mm in length.The new flagship also debuts a new and more sleek design direction for GWM, featuring toned-down light fittings with contemporary LED bars front and rear, a gentle rear spoiler and somewhat conservative chrome highlights to clad the window line.Inside is similar to other recent GWM offerings, and doesn’t stray far from the other vehicles within the Wey brand, in offering a two-spoke steering wheel, clean centre console design with only a handful of toggle controls, as well as a massive dash spanning dual-screen layout. Unlike some rivals, it maintains a more modest digital instrument cluster.Signature features on the outside include the vertical bar on its nose representing the Wey logo, active aero vents in the front splitter and a two-tone paint finish.On the inside it features generous leather appointments in a more traditional-for-China six-seat layout. It features a roof-mounted multimedia display and even wireless phone chargers in each of the rear doors, with leg rests for the independently reclining second row seats.It is offered with wheels spanning from 19- to 21-inches according to data filed with the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, and interestingly features traditional door handles, seemingly in recognition of new laws in China which will seek to prohibit flush door handle designs.GWM’s luxury Wey brand has been confirmed for Australia in the second half of 2026, although its launch line-up is yet to be finalised. It is expected to at least include the G9 people mover, which is already available in right-hand drive in Thailand.The Chinese juggernaut, which currently has a 4x4 heavy line-up under its Cannon and Tank sub-brands faces a renewed challenge in the next few years in Australia. While it finished 2025 with the title of Australia’s favourite Chinese brand, in the first two months of 2026 it has been overtaken by BYD, which is determined to crack the top-three overall this year.It is also facing a race against time to reduce the emissions footprint of its range, which still heavily features diesel and turbo-petrol engines, as Australia’s new vehicle efficiency laws close the vice on higher-polluting engine options.To that end, GWM has said to expect an expansion on its range of available plug-in hybrids across its brands, but also an expansion of its primarily electric Ora sub-brand.
