Is the latest Toyota HiLux a strategic error or a masterstroke in product development?

Nissan is making no bones about the fact that it needs more models to sell in greater numbers in Australia, with China emerging as a key supplier moving forward. With the current range coming from Thailand (Navara), Japan (X-Trail, Ariya, Patrol), United Kingdom (Qashqai, Juke) and North America (Pathfinder), a lower-cost source is seen as a solution to one of the company’s biggest hurdles.

Nissan believes Australians will continue to buy the traditional one-tonne ute in increasing numbers, directly contradicting what Toyota said at the recent launch of the facelifted HiLux range.

The head of an entire region within one of the larger car companies in the world has asked Australians to better appreciate the scale of achievement behind bringing their latest model to market. Speaking at the global unveiling of the Nissan D27 Navara in Adelaide last week, Nissan Oceania Managing Director, Andrew Humberstone, said that dismissing the one-tonne ute as merely a rebadged Mitsubishi Triton is underestimating the magnitude of hard work that has gone into the project.

The Nissan D27 Navara is still a few months away from hitting dealers, but there are signs it could be the best-value dual-cab pick-up in Australia. With full pricing and specification details to be revealed soon, the newly-Mitsubishi Triton-based ute – the fifth generation to wear the badge in 40 years – already boasts several features that may make it a surprise hit for buyers.

Nissan and Australia’s Premcar are again collaborating on a Warrior version of the Navara – and this time everything steps up. Unveiled on the same night that the all-new D27 Navara series made its global debut in Adelaide as the Warrior Concept, the off-road flagship that is one of the few bright spots in the company’s floundering fortunes is now important enough to get equal top billing with Nissan’s crucial international mid-sized ute.

Nissan’s last great hope of reversing a long-term sales decline in Australia has finally been unveiled in the form of the D27-series of Navara.

The next-gen Navara is set to be revealed next week, but Nissan Australia and a local engineering specialist have detailed how it's been tuned for Australia.
