Bruce Garland and Harry Suzuki to lead three-car Isuzu Motorsports Australasian Safari assault.Off-road racing legends Bruce Garland and Harry Suzuki will return to Western Australia to attempt a sixth victory in the Australasian Safari desert rally later this month. The 2014 Safari will be the pairing’s 18th entry in the gruelling endurance event, piloting their race-prepped Isuzu D-Max ute and spearheading a three-car Isuzu Motorsports assault. The Sydney-based Garland/Suzuki pairing will compete in the Extreme 4WD (T1) class, and will be joined by a lesser-modified MU-X SUV driven by West Australian Adrian Di Lallo in the production car (T2) class and a production class D-Max ute driven by Thai driver OLan Sornsirirat. The Isuzu-supported outfit will cover more than 2500km over seven days of endurance racing throughout the Western Australia outback between Perth and Kalbarri. Garland is aiming to be the first diesel-powered outright winner in the event’s history – a credible ambition given his first diesel and 11th outright result in the 2009 Dakar rally. “I still reckon a diesel can win the Safari even though history has so far proved otherwise,” five-time winner Garland says.“You need the right car, the right crew and the right tyres and a bit of luck, so if we have all that lined up – and we believe we do – then we shall see what happens. It’s certainly a trophy I would love to add to my collection.”The Australasian Safari has been traditionally dominated by petrol-powered vehicles, but Garland’s aim is backed by the circa-200kW/700Nm tune of the 3.0-litre turbodiesel in his D-Max racer. The production-based version of the same engine in Di Lallo’s MU-X isn’t far behind, producing around around 180kW/600Nm – up from the 130kW/380Nm in factory-trim. The 56-year-old Garland’s confidence is also unaffected by age and a range of health issues he’s faced in recent years. “The Safari is as much about driving smart as driving hard and that something you only learn from experience. Harry and I have the experience, the car is great and a proven performer”, he said.Carsguide will bring you all the news from the Isuzu Motorsports entries during the Australasian Safari from September 20-27.

Ford Ranger-based SUV | spy shots

The seven seater four wheel drive will likely be named ‘Everest’. Like the Ranger ute it’s based on, it’s developed by Ford Australia, whose design, research and development capability is expected to continue operating locally beyond manufacturing close down in 2016.The Territory rear end on this production test mule disguises a shorter wheelbase than the Ranger, which should make the Everest more manoeuvrable and agile on and off road. Like its rival, the Holden Colorado 7, the Ford is expected to upgrade the Ranger’s leaf springs and drum brakes to a live axle coil suspension setup and rear disc brakes. This should make the ride more passenger friendly, with the possibility of Ford adopting an independent rear suspension setup also an option. This would make the development more costly, but would favour passenger comfort and handling on road.A passenger version of the previous generation Ford Ranger has been in production in Thailand for several years, carrying the Everest name in that local market. But this is the first time the Everest SUV, which will be assembled in Thailand, will feature a smaller wheelbase and the expected suspension, brake and cabin refinement and passenger safety updates to make the SUV a competitive product in the global Ford portfolio.Like the Ranger, the Everest will be sold in European, American and Asia-pacific countries. No details have been revealed about engine and powertrain options, but expect little or no change to Ford’s 147kW 3.2-litre 5 cylinder Turbo diesel unit and 6 speed manual and automatic transmissions for our market. Ford’s 110kW 2.2-litre Turbo diesel, and 122kW 2.5-litre petrol may also feature in overseas models, but both are unlikely to make it to Australian showrooms.Low range is almost certain to continue too, making the Everest the most off road capable passenger four wheel drive offered by Ford Australia since the late 80s Maverick. A rear wheel drive model may also be on the cards, lowering the entry level price for families who don’t need the extra off road capability.Expect the Everest to launch in the second half of 2014, when the new model will need to win over the hearts of families and off road enthusiasts alike. The segment is currently dominated by the Toyota Prado with over 1000 sales per month, but it’s the soft roaders like the Ford Territory, Toyota Kluger, Holden Captiva 7 and Hyundai Santa Fe that make up the majority of sales combined, making passenger accommodation an important success factor. However, it’s the other ute-based passenger SUVs that will feel the heat of increased rivalry, with the Holden Colorado 7, Isuzu MU-X and Mitsubishi Challenger squarely on Ford’s radar. Ford may gain some sales from Territory buyers too, once manufacturing of the local SUV stops in 2016. Territory’s likely replacement, the Ford Edge, is not available with a Diesel engine, meaning customers wishing to buy a diesel four wheel drive Ford will need to turn to the Everest.

2014 Isuzu MU-X | new car sales price

The Isuzu SUV looks like a decent thing against a sea of rather uninspiring competitors out of various Thai factories. It's basically a D-Max with a wagon body and is roughly, Isuzu's version of the Holden Colorado7 but with Isuzu underpinings including a proper 3.0-litre 'truck' engine and much more attractive styling.Three rows of seats accommodate seven passengers with a bit of luggage space down the back. Isuzu says it has a passenger car-like driving experience but we are sceptical given its specification. There's an obvious link style-wise with the D-Max especially around the frontal area with the rear end being something new.And there's plenty of plastic around the body for protection and to get that 'tough' look so coveted by people who buy these things. When it comes to hauling, MU-X has a 3 tonne towing (braked) capacity available on both 4x2 and 4x4 variants.ENGINEPower comes from the familiar 3.0L four pot Isuzu diesel engine with 130kW/380Nm output. It runs a high-pressure common-rail fuel injection system and an intercooled VGT - variable geometry turbocharger. Isuzu says it designed this engine with fuel consumption and low emissions front of mind claiming 8.2-litres/100km.The MU-Xs five-speed automatic (a cog too few) transmission has sequential sports mode. The auto also has hill descent and hill-ascent modes. With its D-Max heritage, the 4x4 version of MU-X would have impressive off road capabilities and selectable high and low range four wheel drive as well as two wheel drive. The 4x2 is rear wheel drive and shouldn't really go off road at all.LADDER CHASSISThe vehicle is on a robust ladder chassis and the 4x4 versions have a front steel plate skid/splash shield as well as steel plate guards to protect the sump and transfer case. Various electronics modulate the 4x4s drive system for optimum grip, with a "Terrain Command" dial select system available on the top model. It has 230mm of ground clearance, and sensible design sees no low-slung components -- the front lower control arms don't hang too low, and the air intake is hidden within the front fender. In the engine bay, the ECU isn't exposed and the alternator sits up high. These features show that Isuzu has protected all the vulnerable parts and a bit of mud isn't going to cause trouble.SUSPENSIONIt rides on double wishbone front suspension with coil springs, gas shocks and stabiliser while down the back is a five-link suspension configuration also with coil springs, stabiliser bar and gas shocks.PRICE AND FEATURESIt's offered in three variants in both 4x2 and 4x4 drivetrains. Pricing starts at $40,500 rising to $53,500. Kit includes a premium audio system, Bluetooth phone, aircon', folding rear seat rows and a suite of safety kit. Nothing doing on fixed price servicing yet, Bluetooth audio streaming only on some models and 'expected' 5 star crash rating.
