Gone is the old two-litre turbo-diesel with its twin turbochargers and 154kW, and in comes a simplified, unit with one less turbo and 29 fewer kiloWatts. Our first drive around Ford's proving ground on both a high-speed ride/handling circuit and off-road course has revealed the magnitude of progress the new Ranger V6 makes. The prototype highlighted the stirring speed and performance on offer, while the new 4WD system and re-engineered three-piece chassis handled the rough stuff with impressive ease. The signs are looking very promising indeed.

The Ford Ranger line-up will never stop growing. Now there's a Ranger FX4 Max, which fills the previously unimagined niche between the XLT, Wildtrak and Raptor models, with a sensible setup and some intentional additions from the flagship ute that make it something different, yet very similar, all at the same time. It's a weird idea, but it works.
