The brand-new Ford Escape has a ground-up rebuild, with a ton of new tech, plenty of space and a very stylish, muscular new look. Ford throws everything at their cars these days, with even the base model full to the brim with the good stuff. But Ford thinks buyers want a bit of luxury in their SUV and might be prepared to pay nearly $50,000 for the top-spec Vignale.

As far as car names go ‘Escape’ is pretty darn good. Yep, the Ford Escape promises a quick exit from whatever it is you want to leave behind: velociraptors, collision course asteroids, zombies, but most likely the Monday-to-Friday grind for weekend adventures somewhere more scenic.

Ford has long offered a compelling alternative to the Toyota RAV4, Mazda CX-5 and Honda CR-V, but - whether badged Kuga or Escape - the European mid-sized SUV has failed to make an impact in Australia.This fourth-generation version, however, deserves to succeed, since it scores strongly for safety, equipment, driving pleasure, comfort, refinement and value, making it a must test-drive experience.

The ST-line is the ‘sporty’ grade in the Escape line-up with its tough looking body kit. The ST-Line starts at a list price of $37,990 for the front-wheel drive petrol, steps up to $41,990 for the all-wheel drive version, but can also be had as a plug-in hybrid for $52,940.
