Launched in Australia in 2024, the Chery Omoda E5 is the Chinese brand’s first fully electric small SUV aimed squarely at value-conscious buyers. It shares its design and underpinnings with the petrol-powered Omoda 5 but swaps the turbo engine for a single electric motor and front-wheel drive. With its bold styling, practical proportions and low starting price, the Omoda E5 is helping Chery gain traction in the growing EV segment.
Built on the same T1X platform as several other Chery models, the Omoda E5 delivers a WLTP range of around 430km from a 61kWh battery. Though not the quickest EV in its class, its smooth power delivery and quiet ride suit urban driving. The cabin reflects the same tech-savvy approach seen in its combustion sibling, with a twin-screen layout and a strong suite of active safety features.
Internationally, the Omoda E5 is marketed under the same name in Europe and South America.
The line-up currently starts at $42,990 for the Omoda E5 Bx and ranges through to $45,590 for the range-topping Omoda E5 Ex.
At a minimum the Chery Omoda E5’s standard features list includes fabric trim (with synthetic leather accents), dual-zone climate control air, twin 12.3-inch screens covering multimedia and instrumentation, built-in sat nav, six-speaker Sony audio (with digital radio), wireless (and wired) Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a ‘Hello Omoda’ voice command function, wireless device charging, alloy wheels, all LED exterior lights, rain-sensing wipers plus keyless entry and start as well as power folding and heated exterior mirrors.
Parts of the interior design are markedly different to combustion Omoda models with the front of the cabin dominated by an enlarged twin-screen array, both 12.3-inch, one covering multimedia and another in front of the driver for instrumentation.
There’s plenty of space up front for the driver and co-pilot, the slimline screens increasing the feeling of space and openness. Move to the rear and there’s more than enough head and legroom behind the driver’s for people around the 182cm (six foot) mark.
The Omoda E5 is powered by a single permanent magnet synchronous electric motor in the nose driving the front wheels through a single-speed reduction gear transmission. Outputs of 150kW/340Nm are solid without being spectacular for a car of this size and close to 1.8-tonne weight.

Boot capacity with all seats up is 300 litres to the cargo cover which is appreciably less than its key competitors all of which hover around the 450-litre mark. That number rises to 1079 litres with the 60/40 split-folding second row backrest lowered and there’s a 19-litre frunk in the nose.
Chery says the Omoda E5 will accelerate from 0-100km/h in 7.6 seconds on its way to a maximum velocity of 172km/h.
Official energy consumption on the WLTP combined (urban/extra-urban) cycle is 15.5kWh/100km and claimed range is a handy 430km.
