We turn the spotlight on the car world's newest and brightest stars as we ask the big questions including the one that really needs answering  -- would you buy one?

What is it?

Nissan's baby SUV with a diesel engine. It comes in two wheel drive form with a manual transmission only.

How much?

Priced from $30,290 it gets some extra kit to justify the $4300 premium for the diesel (up $300 from launch in April). Shame the diesel is so much.

What are competitors?

Chief competitor is the more expensive Hyundai ix35. You might also like to look at the Skoda Yeti or perhaps the bargain priced Ssangyong Korando which includes an auto for $26,990.

What's under the bonnet?

1.6-litre turbo diesel produces 96kW of power and 320Nm of torque. It's paired with a 6-speed manual with drive to the front wheels in this model.

How does it go?

Like a bloody train. Once you're out of the gates it's just a matter of tapping into all that torque. Eats up hills and the kilometres like they're not there.

Is it economical?

Is it ever. It's rated at an impressive 4.5 litres/100km and we were getting 5.5 after 500km. Is also fitted with auto Stop/Start that switches the engine off at traffic lights. With a 65 litre tank that gives it a range well over 1000km.

Is it green?

Gets 3.5 out of 5 stars from the Govt's Green Vehicle Guide (Prius scores 5). Produces 119g of CO2 per kilometre.

Is it safe?

Features a full complement of safety systems along with six airbags, electronic stability and traction control, as well as anti-lock brakes with Brake Assist and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution.

Is it comfortable?

No complaints here. Not as big as some and the door pillar intrudes on the door opening as a result.

What's it like to drive?

Provided you don't do a lot of city driving it's a cracker. The manual change is easy to use, but our test vehicle had a clutch which took up very early making it difficult to manage.

Is it value for money?

As well as the diesel it gets front fog lights, privacy glass and chrome highlights. You also get 17 inch alloys, plus satellite navigation and a reversing camera both of which are now standard across the range.

Would we buy one?

Tempting. Looks good, goes well and if there was an auto in the offering it would be the perfect commuter with its high driving position. Just the price and the lack of auto that count against it.
