Porsche is highlighting its heritage with a strictly limited edition version of its 911 flagship sports car, and well-heeled Australian buyers are in luck.

The 911 Sport Classic harks back to a simpler, more analogue time, and is expected to appeal to Porsche enthusiasts.

But those enthusiasts had better have deep pockets.

Australian pricing starts from $599,100 before on-road costs, making it the priciest 911 currently on sale Down Under. The next most expensive version is the Turbo S Cabriolet which starts at $502,500.

The global allocation for the Sport Classic is just 1250 units, and CarsGuide understands the number slated for Australian buyers is somewhere between 10 and 20 units. Local deliveries will kick off in the fourth quarter of the year.

Referencing Porsche’s past, the Sport Classic was created by specialist arm, Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur, and is inspired by the original 911 from 1964 and the 1972 911 Carrera RS 2.7, according to the German sports car maker.

The Sport Classic gains the wide body of the 911 Turbo upon which it is based, and also adds a huge ‘ducktail’ fixed rear spoiler reminiscent of the Carrera RS 2.7, as well as a ‘double bubble’ roof design.

As with the Sport Classic version of the previous 997-generation 911 from 2009, Porsche took inspiration from the Fashion Grey exterior colour from the iconic Porsche 356, using Sport Grey Metallic.

It’s also available in solid Black, Agate Grey Metallic, Gentian Blue Metallic or Paint to Sample, and features twin stripes on the roof, spoiler and bonnet. Side decals are available and buyers can choose any number between 1 and 99.

Under the bonnet is the 3.7-litre flat six turbocharged petrol engine, tuned to deliver 405kW. It is available exclusively with a seven-speed manual gearbox. Porsche says it is the most powerful manual 911 currently on sale.

It drives the rear wheels only and features ceramic brakes, dynamic chassis control, rear-axle steering, sports exhaust and active suspension management system.

There’s even a specially designed watch that will be offered to buyers, featuring details from the car’s design.

The Sport Classic is the latest in a series of four limited-edition variants from Porsche that started in 2020 with the 911 Targa 4S Heritage Design Edition.

Calling out the make and model of every single car he saw as a toddler might have challenged his parents’ patience, but it was clearly a starting point for Tim Nicholson’s journey into automotive journalism. Tim launched the program, Fender Bender, on community radio station JOY 94.9 during completion of his Master of Arts (Media and Communications). This led to an entry role at industry publication GoAuto, before eventually taking the role of Managing Editor. A stint as RACV’s Motoring Editor – including being an Australia’s Best Cars judge – provided a different perspective to automotive media, before leading him to CarsGuide where he started as a Contributing Journalist in September 2021, and transitioned to Senior Editor in April 2022, before becoming Managing Editor in December 2022.
