Volvo XC40 2018 pricing and specs revealed

Swedish carmaker Volvo will launch its XC40 small SUV for a starting price of $47,990 plus on-road costs.

Volvo has outlined pricing details for its 2018 XC40 range, with the luxury small SUV to kick off at $47,990 before on-road costs when it launches locally next month.

Initially, four full-time variants will be offered in two trim grades – Momentum and R-Design – with two powertrain options – T5 petrol and D4 diesel.

The entry-level T5 Momentum will start at $47,990 plus on-road costs, with the up-spec T5 R-Design will running buyers $54,990. The oil-burning D4 Momentum and D4 R-Design will demand a $3000 premium respectively.

Both engines are 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder units, but the T5 petrol produces 185kW/350Nm compared with the D4 diesel’s 140kW/400Nm.

From release, Volvo will also offer the limited-run Momentum Launch Edition, available with either petrol or diesel engine costing $52,990 and $55,990 respectively.

Featuring an array of interior and exterior features “over and above” the standard Momentum, Volvo Cars Australia says the Momentum Launch Edition represents an added $10,120 worth of value.

While standard equipment on Momentum grades are yet to be confirmed, Momentum Launch Edition vehicles net a sunroof, active LED headlights, adaptive cruise control, premium Harmon Kardon sound system, heated front pews, 19-inch wheels, 360 degree cameras, keyless entry, electric tailgate and leather upholstery.

R-Design Launch Editions will also be available for the T5 and D4, priced at $56,740 and $59,740 respectively, and adding a claimed $6670 worth of extra kit including much of the aforementioned equipment.

Now Volvo's smallest SUV, the 2018 XC40 is the first to be built on the Swedish brand's Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) which brings a host of technologies to the small SUV which were first introduced in its XC90 and XC60 siblings.

Globally, it will also be the first of its kind to house Volvo's new three-cylinder engine, though there is no word on local availability as yet. 

“SUVs continue to be very popular with Australian car buyers, and the compact SUV segment is also growing rapidly,” said Volvo Car Australia boss Nick Connor.

“In such a competitive market you need to stand out from the crowd. We are confident that with its very distinctive look and competitive pricing the XC40 will make an immediate impact with buyers who are looking for something very different from the cookie-cutter models in the compact luxury SUV segment today.”
