Toyota Australia has updated the LandCruiser 70 Series off-roader, with the key focus being multimedia, although its cost has increased considerably as a result.

The LandCruiser 70 Series remains available in three grades (entry-level Workmate, mid-range GX and flagship GXL) with two SUV body-styles (five-door wagon and three-door Troop Carrier) and two ute (single- and dual-cab chassis).

Pricing-wise, the wagon is up $2410, while the Troop Carrier has increased $2360, meaning the LandCruiser 70 Series now starts from $67,400 plus on-road costs.

Meanwhile, the single-cab chassis is up $3750-3850, while the dual-cab chassis has increased $3760-3860, so the LandCruiser 70 Series now reaches $75,600 (see full pricing table below).

Buyers are compensated for the price rises, with a 6.1-inch touchscreen multimedia system now standard range-wide alongside voice control, satellite navigation and Bluetooth connectivity.

Other new equipment includes two front USB ports, a 12V power outlet, a larger smartphone holder and a cupholder in the passenger’s door bin.

As before, all LandCruiser 70 Series variants are powered by a 151kW/430Nm 4.5-litre turbo-diesel V8 engine, which is exclusively mated to five-speed manual transmission and a part-time four-wheel system with a low-range transfer case.

Justin’s dad chose to miss his birth because he wanted to watch Peter Brock hopefully win Bathurst, so it figures Justin grew up to have a car obsession, too – and don’t worry, his dad did turn up in time after some stern words from his mum. That said, despite loving cars and writing, Justin chose to pursue career paths that didn’t lend themselves to automotive journalism, before eventually ending up working as a computer technician. But that car itch just couldn’t be scratched by his chipped Volkswagen Golf R (Mk7), so he finally decided to give into the inevitable and study a Master of Journalism at the same time. And even with the long odds, Justin was lucky enough to land a full-time job as a motoring journalist soon after graduating and the rest, as they say, is history. These days, Justin happily finds himself working at CarsGuide during the biggest period of change yet for the automotive industry, which is perhaps the most exciting part of all. In case you’re wondering, Justin begrudgingly sold the Golf R (sans chip) and still has plans to buy his dream car, an E46 BMW M3 coupe (manual, of course), but he is in desperate need of a second car space – or maybe a third.
