New Toyota HiLux Rugged X and Rogue 2021 detailed: What's in store for incoming Ford Ranger Raptor and Wildtrak rivals

The Rugged X sits atop the facelifted HiLux range.

It’s no secret a new HiLux will be in showrooms soon, but Toyota Australia has more in store for the facelifted ute than what was confirmed last week, with its Rogue and Rugged X flagships yet to have their pricing and specification detailed – but we still have a very good idea of what to expect.

Toyota Australia quietly released two images of the Rogue and Rugged X 4x4 dual-cab pick-ups to the media last week, but then went on to publish several more on its own website. As such, we now know most of what’s in store for the HiLux flagships, which once again rival the Ford Ranger Wildtrak and Raptor respectively.

The Rogue’s front end is noticeably different from the SR5+ grade upon which it is based, with changes including an even bolder front fascia, which integrates fender flares into the foglight assemblies and features black and metallic-grey trim.

Changes to the Rogue’s rear end aren’t as dramatic, with the SR5+’s large silver ‘Toyota’ lettering replaced by a small badge on the tailgate, while the bumper’s chrome accents are instead metallic grey. The chrome ‘HiLux’ badge has also been integrated into a black tailgate-handle embellishment.

Two-tone 18-inch alloy wheels as well as a sports bar and a hard tonneau cover, both of which are finished in black alongside the side mirrors and doorhandles, help the lifestyle-focused Rogue stand out from the HiLux crowd.

Meanwhile, the Rugged X focuses on capability, with its black steel front bumper integrating an LED light bar, a bash plate and red recovery hooks, while its front grille is split into two honeycomb sections.

Matte-black bonnet and tub decals, fender flares, a snorkel, black alloy wheels wrapped in all-terrain tyres, side body protection, rock rails, a steel rear bumper and matte-black ‘Toyota’ lettering help round out the Rugged X’s purposeful look. Like the Rogue, it also integrates the chrome ‘HiLux’ badge into a black tailgate-handle embellishment.

Of note, the Rugged X’s black sports bar penetrates the tub instead of being mounted on its side walls – as implemented on the SR5+ upon which it’s based as well as the Rogue.

The Rogue and Rugged X will upgrade to a new version of HiLux’s 2.8-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine, which produces 150kW/500Nm (+20kW/50Nm) when mated to a six-speed torque-converter automatic or 150kW/420Nm (+20kW) when matched to a six-speed manual.

In automatic variants of the SR5+, maximum braked towing capacity has increased to 3500kg (+300kg) to match their manual counterparts, with the same expected to be true of the Rogue and Rugged X.

As reported, Toyota Australia says a chassis retune – including longer leaf springs – has resulted in unladen ride quality being improved alongside handling and stability when towing for all HiLux variants.

Furthermore, power steering revisions – including a new variable-flow control pump – make turbo-diesel variants like the Rogue and Rugged X easier to park and produce more feel via the wheel.

Inside, the HiLux now features an 8.0-inch display powered by an updated multimedia system with control knobs and enhanced voice control as well as support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The instrument cluster features new dials as well as a 4.2-inch multifunction display with a digital speedometer, among other new functions.

Given the manual and automatic SR5+ dual-cab pick-ups are priced from $60,420 and $62,420 plus on-road costs respectively, expect the Rogue and Rugged X to come much closer to the $70,000 mark when they are released in the coming months.
