Kia Australia has confirmed an all-new Sorento SUV is coming soon.

Set to replace the current model that launched in 2015, the next Sorento has already been spied in Europe but it was unclear when it would arrive in Australia. Kia’s local COO Damien Meredith told media this week that it’s on its way shortly.

“(Current) Sorento’s time is up, so it’s pending,” Meredith said.

However, because it’s such an important model for the brand, its new SUV flagship, Meredith didn’t want to reveal anything further. What we do know, is that it’s likely to be revealed sometime in early 2020 before arriving in Australia by early 2021 at the latest.

It’s also expected the Sorento will lead a new styling direction for the brand, taking elements of the newly-arrived Seltos that features a more detailed and intricate front-end.

Under the bonnet it’s long been rumoured that the new Sorento will debut a plug-in hybrid powertrain as part of the South Korean brand’s move into electrification. It could also feature a conventional hybrid offering too, alongside updates of the 3.5-litre V6 petrol and 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engines. It’s not clear what engines Kia Australia will choose, but don’t rule out the plug-in hybrid, if it’s available, because the brand wants to enter the alternative fuel market with its e-Niro and e-Soul in 2020.

We’ll keep you updated with more Sorento news as it’s revealed.

Steve has been obsessed with all things automotive for as long as he can remember. Literally, his earliest memory is of a car. Having amassed an enviable Hot Wheels and Matchbox collection as a kid he moved into the world of real cars with an Alfa Romeo Alfasud. Despite that questionable history he carved a successful career for himself, firstly covering motorsport for Auto Action magazine before eventually moving into the automotive publishing world with CarsGuide in 2008. Since then he's worked for every major outlet, having work published in The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, Drive.com.au, Street Machine, V8X and F1 Racing. These days he still loves cars as much as he did as a kid and has an Alfa Romeo Alfasud in the garage (but not the same one as before... that's a long story).
