More than 58,000 people attended the first three public days of the 2012 Australian International Motor Show in Sydney - up from about 57,000 for the same period when the show was last held two years ago.
“There’s a level of buyer confidence that wasn’t there in 2010,” says event director Russ Tyrie. “The new-car market is on track for another record, so there are a lot of people out looking at new cars. “It’s not the boom we’ve been hoping for but it’s still an improvement,” Tyrie says.
After a peak of 320,000 visitors in 2001 – when the new Holden Monaro was unveiled – attendance fell to 135,000 in 2010, less than half the all-time high. “I’ve experienced closing weekends that are busier than opening weekends, and vice versa. But the early signs are good,” he says.
“This will be the last chance to see the show in Sydney for two years.” The Australian International Motor Show – which now alternates with Melbourne and is run every second year in Sydney – will move to the Homebush Bay Olympic site in August 2014.
The Geneva motor show experienced a downturn in visitors this year, and the Tokyo motor show has rebranded itself as a technology show for next year’s event, in an attempt to attract more foreign car makers – and show visitors.
