Move over Transformers, Lego is muscling in on the mutating vehicle movie genre.
Lego Motion Picture is a 3D animated film being produced by the iconic toy block company as a joint venture with Warners Bros, and set to hit the screens in 2014. And they’re looking for some starring roles to come from the public, with a call having gone out for Lego fans to nominate their designs.
The directors are seeking original creations of left-field Lego vehicles with a mutant twist: an ice-cream van battle tank, spaceship street sweeper, or jet fighter school bus, for example. The casting search is being run as a competition, with the rules allowing the entry of any kind of transportation device as long as the pieces it’s made from don’t come from a kit for the same kind of vehicle.
Don’t make the jet fighter pieces into just another jet fighter, in other words. And you can’t use third-party Lego brands, such as the ones associated with movie franchises. The contest will run over the next few months, and the only downside is that at the moment it’s open only to residents of the US and Canada.
The organisers were quickly called out over the restriction, with comments on Lego’s Youtube channel pointing out there were plenty of creative fans in other parts of the world – including in Denmark where it was invented.
Lego has responded by assuring the world that more versions of the competition open to other countries are on the plan. So get set to swipe the kids’ toy stash and start thinking outside the brick.
