As we all know, some drivers aren’t ready to make the switch to an all-electric vehicle (EV) yet because of range anxiety, but one brand might have finally done enough with an all-new model to allay their concerns – well, more than enough.

While not yet revealed, Mercedes-Benz’s Vision EQXX concept is already looking likely to reset the efficiency benchmark for EVs, with an energy consumption claim of more than 10km per kWh targeted.

What does that mean for driving range? Well, the brand is aiming for more than 1000km – in the real world. Such a result would blow all current mass-production EVs out of the water.

Now, the Vision EQXX is a concept, but Mercedes-Benz CEO Markus Schafer has described it as “more than a show car”, hinting its technology and features will eventually find their way into production model/s from the brand.

The battery in question will no doubt be one such item, and while we don’t know its size yet, Mercedes-Benz has said its cell density is 20 per cent higher than that of the already impressive EQS upper-large sedan.

The Vision EQXX is also set to have the EQS’ number when it comes to aerodynamics, as the former is set to the break the latter’s drag coefficient record of 0.20Cd, all in the pursuit of unrivalled EV driving range.

Key to the Vision EQXX’s success there is its aerodynamically friendly exterior design, which has been previewed in a new darkened image of its side profile. Needless to say, the fastback looks quite slippery, as indicated by its, well, fast back.

The Vision EQXX will be officially revealed at 4.00am on January 4 (AEDT), so it won’t be long before we find out its key powertrain details and, hopefully, its specific claimed driving range. Stay tuned.

Justin’s dad chose to miss his birth because he wanted to watch Peter Brock hopefully win Bathurst, so it figures Justin grew up to have a car obsession, too – and don’t worry, his dad did turn up in time after some stern words from his mum. That said, despite loving cars and writing, Justin chose to pursue career paths that didn’t lend themselves to automotive journalism, before eventually ending up working as a computer technician. But that car itch just couldn’t be scratched by his chipped Volkswagen Golf R (Mk7), so he finally decided to give into the inevitable and study a Master of Journalism at the same time. And even with the long odds, Justin was lucky enough to land a full-time job as a motoring journalist soon after graduating and the rest, as they say, is history. These days, Justin happily finds himself working at CarsGuide during the biggest period of change yet for the automotive industry, which is perhaps the most exciting part of all. In case you’re wondering, Justin begrudgingly sold the Golf R (sans chip) and still has plans to buy his dream car, an E46 BMW M3 coupe (manual, of course), but he is in desperate need of a second car space – or maybe a third.
