Peugeot has added three new hybrid options to its Australian line-up as the brand transitions to a hybrid-only passenger car range.

The 308 Hybrid hatchback, 2008 Hybrid small SUV and 408 GT Premium Fastback Hybrid are officially in showrooms and on sale now alongside the mid-sized Peugeot 3008 SUV and the electric, diesel and petrol E-Partner and E-Expert light commercial vans.

All four hybrid models will utilise Peugeot’s latest hybrid technology, which pairs a 1.2-litre, three-cylinder, turbo-petrol engine with a single electric motor and a 48-volt hybrid system that delivers considerable improvements on fuel efficiency and carbon emissions compared to their petrol predecessors.

Power and torque will peak at 107kW/230Nm on all-four models, while a six-speed electrified dual-clutch automatic will also come as standard.

It follows Peugeot’s decision last September to axe all of its plug-in hybrid models in Australia while announcing it would slow its electric vehicle transition in favour of greater hybrid technology.

Speaking to CarsGuide at the Melbourne Motor Show last weekend, General Manager of Peugeot Australia David Owen said the move was in response to record market demand for hybrid technology.

ā€œIf you look at the Australian market and you see the shift, particularly to hybrid, it’s what Australian customers want,ā€ said Owen.

ā€œIt really did make sense for the Australian market to pivot to hybrid.ā€

Sales of hybrid vehicles are at all-time highs as demand for petrol and diesel cars in Australia continues to slide. As of March this year, 47,014 hybrids (not including plug-in hybrids) have been sold, a year-to-date increase of 34.8 per cent.

Diesel and petrol sales have fallen by 9.8 per cent each over the same period, while EVs have fallen 19.9 per cent.

On sales, Owen said the brand was looking for ā€œa stronger result than last yearā€ when it clocked just 1896 sales for the year, a decline of 24.6 per cent on 2023’s 2516 sales.

Peugeot Australia is expecting further reinforcements with the 5008 Hybrid, a larger family SUV, expected to join the line-up later this year.
