Details of a new model with global intentions from Chinese carmaker Geely coincide with news that the brand is set to launch in Australia, leading to the obvious question: will it come here?

The Geely Galaxy E5 is an electric car – a mid-size SUV that could rival the usual suspects, Tesla Model Y and Kia EV6 – which has recently had more details go public via its website and reports from China.

The Galaxy E5, which is part of the slightly more upmarket ‘Galaxy’ sub-brand which apparently operates with some degree of separation from Geely Auto, is listed on the brand’s official website as a ‘Global Intelligent Pure Electric SUV’.

Of the models on Geely Galaxy’s official website, the E5 is the only one that mentions global market aspirations.

It’s set to come with either a 49.52 or 60.22kWh battery pack, with CLTC claimed ranges of 440km and 530km respectively – though the WLTP system used here will mean shorter rated ranges.

According to CarNewsChina, it features a 160kW electric motor, and has a low drag coefficient of 0.269Cd. Inside, the layout is fairly standard, though its central multimedia touchscreen is very large.

Of course, Geely has yet to launch in Australia so while the E5 makes sense as a model for this market, nothing is locked in.

Geely as a parent company does also however have fellow Chinese brand Zeekr under its banner, which is currently building a presence in Australia.

Geely could also bring an electric ute, which is also built with right-hand drive capabilities, to Australia - the Radar (or Riddara as it could be known here) was revealed as being right-hand-drive-ready earlier this year.

“Exciting news! Get ready for the release of an RHD electric pick-up truck available in your market soon!” said a Geely statement, though not referring to Australia specifically.
