BYD’s luxury division Denza has revealed specifications for its new, large Ti7 plug-in hybrid SUV which will likely come to Australia when the brand launches here later this year.

In the same way Lexus is Toyota's luxury sub-brand, BYD has created Denza. But in this case, the focus is high performance cars and luxury off-road SUVs.

CarsGuide recently tested the Denza B5 medium SUV in China and now we know more about its big sister the Ti7.

At 4999mm long, 1995mm tall and 1865mm wide the Ti7 has similar dimension to the Toyota LandCruiser Prado but looks more like a Land Rover Defender with its long, high bonnet, tall windows and blocky stature. While the Ti7 is a large SUV it's understood the cabin has two rows for five seats, only.

The Ti7 uses a hybrid powertrain which combines a 1.5-litre petrol engine with one electric motor for the rear-drive variant and two electric motors for the all-wheel drive version.

The output of the petrol engine is 115kW while the rear-wheel drive variant produces 200kW from the rear motor. The all-wheel drive version adds a 160kW motor to the front axle.

Two batteries will be available with the entry-level 26.6kWh LFP battery offering up to 105km of range and fuel consumption of 6.3L/100km. The top-grade 35.6kWh battery steps up to a 130km range claim and fuel consumption of 6.4L/100km.

Denza is known as the FangChengBao car company in China but has been given the Denza name for overseas markets.

When Denza comes to Australia at the end of this year it will most likely lead with the B5 medium SUV. As a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle the B5 will be up against rivals such as the Land Rover Defender 110 PHEV.

Fang Cheng Bao has also revealed several other smaller SUVs in China, including the Bao 8 and Ti3, both of which come with roof-top stationed drones. At this point BYD hasn't confirmed if these are coming to Australia or the local pricing on any models.

Out of boredom, she learnt to drive at 14 on her parents’ bush property in what can only be described as a heavily modified Toyota LandCruiser.   At the age of 17 she was told she couldn’t have a V8 Holden ute by her mother, which led to Laura and her father laying in the driveway for three months building a six-cylinder ute with more horsepower than a V8.   Since then she’s only ever owned V8s, with a Ford Falcon XW and a Holden Monaro CV8 part of her collection over the years.  Laura has authored two books and worked as a journalist writing about science, cars, music, TV, cars, art, food, cars, finance, architecture, theatre, cars, film and cars.
