We already knew that the upcoming Need for Speed movie would feature a specially-modified version of the fifth-generation Mustang, but now it’s been confirmed that the all-new 2015 sixth-generation Mustang will feature alongside it.

The 2015 Ford Mustang isn’t due in US showrooms until later this year, and won’t grace local sales floors until 2015, but moviegoers will be able to see it put through its paces on the big screen from March.

We’ve already had a first look at the new model at its simultaneous world reveal in Sydney, and the public has got its first taste at the Detroit motor show this week, but it will be some time before we get to experience it from the driver’s seat.

Aside from the 2015 Mustang’s appearance in the Need for Speed Rivals game, The Need for Speed movie will be the next best thing for the time being.

Adding further credence to the movie is that Mustang pro-drifter Vaughn Gittin Jr handled stunt-driving duties, and his sideways tendencies are guaranteed to demonstrate the controllability of the pony’s new independent rear suspension.

The fact that at least two generations of Mustang will feature in the movie is no coincidence either, according to the film’s director Scott Waugh.

“I chose Mustang because it is a car that really represents American culture. It just represents modern muscle, and it’s iconic, having been in some of the greatest car chase movies of all time.”

Waugh is referring to the Mustang’s appearance in cinematic classics such as the Goldfinger James Bond classic, Bullitt with Steve McQueen, and both iterations of Gone in 60 Seconds.

Back when all cars burned fuel and couldn't drive themselves, Mal was curing boredom by scanning every car his parents' VB Commodore drove past. His childhood appreciation for the car world exploded during a three-year stint in the US, and serious questions were asked when he spent a good chunk of his uni career perfecting lap times at Wakefield Park. Mal got his big break scooping the VE II Commodore, before a stint at Overlander magazine and kicking off his online career with The Motor Report in its heyday. These days he's exactly the same height as Michael Schumacher and uses his powers for good at the helm of CarsGuide's editorial team. Mal proudly shuns brand allegiance and counts three young kids, an EH Holden, NA MX-5, KE20 Corolla, W116 Mercedes-Benz and the world's most versatile Toyota Echo among his personal stable. He also craves a Subaru Vortex, so get in touch if you know where to find one.
