Forget fuel prices, go buy that V8 Mustang!

Despite petrol being more expensive than caviar right now, it could be an opportune time to buy that Ford Mustang or Ranger Raptor, as car dealers will be fighting an uphill battle to persuade customers into high performance cars.I’m well aware that my CarsGuide colleague Tim Gibson has penned a story citing the Mustang and Raptor as two of the biggest petrol blackholes in the known universe but my question to you is: since when was a high performance vehicle a rational purchase? Mind you, this is coming from somebody who has never made a rational car purchase, or possibly any rational purchase for that matter. The same somebody who is currently trying to work out a way to acquire a 1968 Mustang Fastback probably by selling one of her other irrational car purchases to fund it.I’m not suggesting you buy an old petrol car, not unless you like being let down by a car that doesn’t see driving reliably as a priority, but I do think it’s about to be a very good time to buy a new petrol one. See if this situation continues or gets worse, car dealers will start to have rapidly aging stock in their forecourts and that gives you bargaining power. We’re approaching the end of March and that’s significant for three reasons. First it’ll be one month since the Iran war started and fuel prices started to climb, indicating that this thing might not be over as soon as some suggested. Second, the end of any month is known for being a smart time to buy with dealers under the pump to get their sales figures locked in. And third, dealers are still doing plate clearance sales in March — which means they are trying to get rid of 2025 model year cars before nobody wants last year’s model.Combine all of these factors with more people than ever thinking maybe now is the time for electric vehicles, and those car makers without many or any EVs might be starting to stress and dealers feeling the pressure to drop prices on petrol models to encourage buyers.Ford has only one electric car — the Mustang Mach E SUV — and a very limited passenger model range really only consisting of the Ranger, Everest and Mustang sportscar. We’ve been saying for yonks that despite Ford selling enormous numbers of the Ranger, only one hiccup to the model could be a big problem for the brand, which counts on it almost entirely.And now we have the hiccup, which is fuel being outrageously expensive, and Ford not having a decent hybrid or electric version of the Ranger for buyers to go to while other brands such as BYD have the Shark 6 and MG with its soon to launch MU9 EV ready to swoop into the space.What I’m saying Ford, Mazda, Nissan, Honda and even Toyota will likely be under pressure to lower prices and that could mean picking up a Mustang or Ranger Raptor, Mazda MX-5, Nissan Z, Honda Civic Type R or Toyota GR Yaris for less.Having been through plenty of fuel hikes in my time I can tell you that providing the war doesn’t escalate completely out of control then petrol prices will recede to around what they were before now. Besides with the surge in electric cars and the limited infrastructure in place to charge even the current number, you might find EVs aren’t the perfect solution to avoiding high petrol prices.Don’t get me wrong, EVs are fantastic and make far better city commuter cars than those with combustion engines, but I think the knee jerk reaction going on is pretty severe.And we’re feeling the pain of high petrol — we have a regular family car that we drive every day and it costs $150 to fill its 55L tank. We’re more conscious of fuel consumption than ever and it’s making us use the car less. So with this information you might be in a position to get a good deal on a petrol car that you would have bought anyway if you were already in the market.  It’s easy to get caught up in the panic and want to ditch petrol for electric. Psychologically we’re designed to follow what everyone else is doing, so it makes sense especially when fuel costs are rising so high. Moving towards electric is the right way to go long term, but right now if you’ve always wanted a petrol performance car then buy the Mustang, save some money and catch the train until petrol prices return to normal. Which, of course, they will.

Cars that'll cost you the most in fuel

Fuel prices are soaring across the board whether it is petrol or diesel. Some drivers are being more affected than others as lower fuel efficiency contributes to higher refuelling costs. Here are the most expensive cars to run currently in Australia based on fuel efficiency. Other contributing factors to the high fuel costs on this list include the fact many of the cars have big fuel tanks and require premium fuel.Fuel prices have been calculated using the average prices for fuel in New South Wales and at an average of 15,000km driven per year. Among the heaviest guzzlers is the Nissan Patrol four-wheel drive, with its 5.6-litre V8 drinking fuel at a rate of 14.4L/100km. Its 140-litre fuel tank and requirement for premium unleaded petrol means it costs $364 per fill-up and a total yearly cost of $5617.28. The Patrol will move to a more efficient 3.5-litre six-cylinder twin-turbo petrol, which is expected to reduce fuel costs. The Ford Mustang sports car is another V8 on this list, with its 5.0-litre unit registering average fuel efficiency at 13.6L/100km and a yearly cost of $5310.27.Ford’s other representative is the Ranger Raptor high-end ute, powered by a twin-turbo six-cylinder petrol engine costing $4482.76 per year. The Ineos Grenadier off-roader is the most expensive model to run and costs $5618.50 a year to run, in part due to it being diesel, which has been the fuel type that has increased the most. The Lexus GX550 has refuelling costs of $208 per fill-up currently, costing $4800 for the year, along with nearly $3000 for the Jeep Gladiator, which unlike many on this list can run off E10 fuel.The 6.2-litre petrol V8 found in the Chevrolet Silverado full-size pick-up has an economy of more than 12 litres per 100km, costing $4,356.30 over the year.  Genesis’ GV70 luxury SUV costs more $4400 per year in fuel, a similar figure to the supercharged 5.0-litre V8 variants of the Land Rover Defender. Highest fuel efficiency new vehicles on sale under $150,000

Best options for new Police cars

It’s been a minute since the only cars we would regularly see wearing a strip of blue and white Sillitoe tartan down the side were the Holden Commodore, Ford Falcon and sometimes Toyota Camry.The world of police cars and vehicles has broadened — Ford Rangers, Hyundai Santa Fes, Volkswagen Passats, the list goes on. All must be practical, of course, and for different purposes.But there are new things to consider now, like hybrids and EVs, new ute options and of course which cars will be the PR show cars, the ones that don’t really have to work too hard. Here are five suggestions from across the spectrum.BYD Shark 6Something about a ute in white with police decals and a bullbar on the front just works. Our digital artist Thanos Pappas has rendered the Shark 6 as a police car both in the red dirt of rural Australia, and in the Sydney CBD.Australia and its vastly different environments could be the perfect place to see if the innovative BYD Shark 6 has what it takes to ‘keep the streets safe’ as it were.While its electric ability would make it ideal for city and suburban patrols, its petrol power means range anxiety on longer routes isn’t a concern.The big question surrounds its ability to off-road - CarsGuide’s off-road guru Marcus Craft deemed it suitable for “light to moderate off-roading” only, though we’re not sure how many police chases end up requiring rock-crawls and hill-climbs.Still, it looks good in the livery, and isn’t that the most important thing about policing? Right? Isn’t it?Kia TasmanPerhaps a little closer to reality is the idea of a Kia Tasman police car. Not only is there already a strong relationship between Kia (and Hyundai) and many police services around the country but there’s even a mock-up Tasman cop car already.During 2025 there was even a period that around Australia “multiple jurisdictions considering and are interested” in using the Tasman for policing.Whether that comes to fruition is yet to be seen - a lot of testing has to be done before a car is deemed suitable for police work, perhaps one reason a couple of other cars on this list may fall short in certain areas.Ford MustangThe Mustang is one such car that might have a couple of downsides - the inability to to detain someone safely being one - but police have often had high-powered highway patrol cars or community engagement vehicles that aren’t really built for your everyday patrols.It wouldn’t be the first time this has come up - about ten years ago the NSW Police Force was considering a Mustang GT for highway patrol, but the previous generation car was struggling with some overheating issues under hard testing.The Ford Mustang seems like a good choice given it’s an easy design to admire, it’s actually a very capable sports car, and it’s got a link to the former FPV patrol cars in the form of its Coyote 5.0-litre engine, on which FPV’s Miami V8 was based.Toyota RAV4This might seem like a boring, obvious answer, but the incoming Toyota RAV4 would make a really sensible car for Australian police.The hybrid of it all, not to mention Toyota’s long history of supplying police cars and its reputation for reliability.That and if the current RAV4 is anything to go by, the new one should be a fairly capable and easy-to-use thing.Genesis G70Victoria Police announced in 2017 it would add dozens of BMW 5 Series highway patrol cars to its fleet, so why not a similar rear-drive sports sedan from the sibling brand to Hyundai, models from which police have been using for some time now.A 3.3-litre twin-turbo engine with 274kW and 510Nm, plus some decent handling and dynamics alongside a design I reckon would suit the blue and white (and yellow in highway patrol form).

Ford's new mind-bending V8 car revealed

Ford’s flagship sports car has just levelled up.Ford has announced its new Mustang Dark Horse SC sports car over in North America. This Mustang will replace the Shelby GT500 variant — as the top-spec track-ready edition of the car.Little is known about the technical details of the new muscle car, other than it will be powered by a supercharged 5.2-litre V8 petrol engine.This same engine is fitted to the hardcore Mustang GTD, which makes 608kW, but expect the Dark Horse SC to produce less than that but still more than the Shelby GT500's 567kW.Ford has confirmed a series of big changes to other areas of the car.It has had its suspension overhauled, with adaptive dampers and firmer springs than in the regular Dark Horse.There are also new anti-roll bars, and a lightweight strut tower brace to give the car more poise when handling. There has been some serious weight shedding on this Mustang, equating to 68 kilograms. With the Track package, the car sits on carbon-fibre wheels and there are forged aluminium suspension components, replacing steel ones.The Mustang has undergone some exterior styling changes, with a new aluminium hood featuring an imposing vent. There is a re-worked carbon fibre rear spoiler available, offering a substantial boost to downforce at high speeds. On the inside it gets a flat-bottom leather steering wheel. Alcantara and carbon fibre elements are a constant in the cabin.It is unlikely we will see this full-throttle version of the car in Australia in the short term, with buyers having to settle for the standard Dark Horse variant.It's naturally-aspirated 5.0-litre V8 only produces 372kW (which is 500-horsepower) and 566Nm.

More Ford Raptor models planned: Report

Ford is looking to add new Raptor models to its lineup, according to Ford Authority.The Raptor name represents the high-performance, off-road specialist variants of Ford models.Ford’s Chief Financial Officer Sherry House said more Raptor models are in the works, at the recent Barclays Global Auto and Mobility Tech Conference."I know that some people in the audience here just had a wonderful ride in some of our Raptors, and that's a product that I think that we're going to be doing a bit more of as well," House said. “We're going to be leaning into these products that are just passion products. I mean, these are vehicles that people love.”Adding further fuel to the Raptor fire, is Ford's Dakar rally commitment to the range.The brand fielded its largest amount of Raptor-badged cars ever in the off-road race, with four factory Ford Racing Raptor T1+ full-size pick-ups and four additional privateer Raptors competing on the same core platform."Those privateer entries are a deliberate part of how we grow the Raptor ecosystem globally — sharing technology, data, and durability across customer teams who are pushing the same hardware in the same extreme conditions," Ford said in a press release before the race.There is nothing offical yet on what these new Raptor models could be.The Ranger Raptor ute is the only Ford currently on sale in Australia bearing the iconic name plate, sitting at the top of the best-selling Ranger line-up. One new possibility is a Ford Mustang Raptor. The Mustang is the best-selling sports car in Australia and the Blue Oval’s third best seller behind the Ranger ute and Everest SUV. An Everest Raptor is another possibility, but it would likely need to get the V6 petrol engine found in the Ranger Raptor.There is also a Raptor variant of the Bronco compact SUV, but the Bronco has never been officially sold in Australia.

‘Never seen before’: Ford's big ute win

Ford Australia said the brand was confident it would maintain its position as the second best selling brand in the nation thanks to the “never seen before” response to the new Ranger Super Duty.The Blue Oval's Australian Marketing Director Ambrose Henderson said the brand was “really confident” in its plans for next year, despite renewed pressure from both established and upcoming rivals.Ford depends heavily on its best-selling Ranger ute for its impressive sales of nearly 100,000 units in 2026. It now faces a renewed push from Kia with its long-awaited Tasman and BYD shaking up the ute space with its smash-hit Shark 6 PHEV, and that’s not to mention Toyota and its recently-refreshed HiLux range.Henderson said continued updates for the Ranger and Everest line-up, including wider availability of the V6 now the 2.0-litre bi-turbo has been axed, as well as new variants and incremental content upgrades would see the ute continue to fend off the competition.But the biggest source of new sales will be the Ranger Super Duty, Henderson said.“We’re still in the launch phase for Super Duty” Henderson explained. ‘We expect to have a really successful year on that in 2026 — our expectation is that it is going into white space and will be an incremental opportunity for us.”By this, he means the Super Duty was unlikely to cannibalise existing Ranger Sales, and instead will enter a new category where fewer rivals are able to compete.The Super Duty is a unique offering in the Australian market. Much more than simply another Ranger variant, the Super Duty is almost entirely new underneath, with an up-gauged frame, new suspension, heavy duty axles and even a new transfer case. These allow it up to 8000kg of GCM and push it into a category above most dual-cabs.“The initial response has been incredible," said Henderson. “Right back from when we first announced the nameplate - we were flooded with a response we’ve never seen before.”While he wouldn’t yet share numbers - these should become available around this time next month when the first round of VFACTs figures drop for 2026, he said the models available now were just the beginning of what the true volume the new ute has to offer.“The more retail pick-up and XLT are launching later this year, and we’ve got really strong order banks for those as well. The response has been really overwhelming,” he said.While the true scope of Super Duty is yet to be seen, Ford can chalk up a handful of other segment wins despite being slightly down for the year, by 5.8 per cent. The Ranger-based Everest off-roader is number one in the Large SUV segment, while Mustang leads the sports car pack. Plus, the brand had a record year for its Transit van range.There are storm clouds on the horizon for Ford. Rivals are circling with new options and the New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES), which places heavy fines on high-emitting engines such as Ford’s diesel V6, poses a threat as Ford is not selling enough electric cars to help alleviate its fleet average.The critically well-received Mustang Mach-e for example, only found 483 homes over the course of 2025.“We’re in the most competitive automotive market in the world — within that, everyone is fighting really hard,” Henderson said.“We’re happy with the performance we have in that EV area, but we’ll have more transitional technologies over time.”“If you think about where Ford does really well in providing that capability to travel around Australia and be able to do those kinds of 4x4 activities - there still needs to be more of an investment from an infrastructure point of view to make those things more viable,” he said.

Ford has long suggested the future of its iconic Mustang muscle car would be hybridisation rather than electrification.A new report from Ford Authority, quotes “sources familiar with the matter” who said the current-generation S650 Mustang, which launched in Australia earlier this year, was in the process of being tested with a hybrid drivetrain.According to the report, a version of the S650 is already in testing what is referred to as a “Technology Prove-Out stage”, which means test mules are out on the roads in the US.Ford’s outspoken CEO, Jim Farley, has said the brand “will never make an all-electric Mustang” as long as it was able, although has hinted that hybrid power could be the right solution for more performance-oriented vehicles into the future.“I don’t know about 10 years from now, but for the 10 years we’re in now, a partial electrification is the perfect solution for high-performance customers” he said. “There’s going to be lots of grey degrees of partial electrification that’s still good for the planet."“You can still have that emotional experience. I think that’s where we’re going to be for a while.”He noted that those looking for an electrified take on the Mustang already have that demand fulfilled by the Mach-E coupe SUV.The company is yet to be any more specific on what the hybrid Mustang would look like, although many outlets have suggested it will be a plugless or self-charging hybrid model adding electric motors into the mix, possibly even adding all-wheel drive.In comparison, its closest rival on its American home turf is the Dodge Charger, which is either powered by a 3.0-litre twin-turbo inline six engine, or fully electric power via dual traction motors on the front and rear axle. The Charger is also available in either two- or four-door form, as it is also the successor to the previous two-door-only Challenger. Ford has notably not ruled out a four-door Mustang.When will we find out more? According to Automotive News Ford is due to facelift the current S650 Mustang in late 2026, with a full model redesign due in 2029. Farley suggested combustion power will remain in the Mustang nameplate well into the 2030s, telling media the brand would keep building V8s “as long as God and the politicians let us”.Under Farley’s leadership Ford has effectively split its most famous nameplates into sub-brands. Mustang features the iconic combustion coupe and now the electric SUV, while an expansive range of Maverick monocoque utes has proliferated, including a successful plug-in hybrid.The Bronco marque of Jeep-style off-road SUVs has also found success overseas, while the brand plans to roll out a range of what it says will be revolutionary affordable vehicles on its recently-announced low-cost universal EV platform. It will spawn a small EV ute first, and is expected to expand to SUVs in a range of sizes.
